A good episode tonight. Poor old Lordy. Those Downton women are so thin that I cannot eat my tube of Smarties while I'm watching them as they make me feel guilty.

Oh yes their garden was featured on Gardeners World recently and it was in one of the housey magazines too.

Edith is positively "rough" compared with her refined sister. Brahaspatinda. But I agree equally as pretty.

Poor Thomas- offers to teach someone to read and is immediately suspected of having an ulterior motive. Maybe he is just becoming nicer!!??
We could do -Most unlikely ever to happen pairings
I wil start with Thomas and Lady M (who falls desperately in love and no longer minds about marrying beneath her-not the biggest problem for the two of course!!)
Any others?

Reminds me of when I worked in Saudi in the late 80s/early 90s. In one hospital I had a multi-national team and sometimes they would ask me about where I lived etc. They were really disbelieving. Some of the Filipina staff wanted to earn a bit extra by cleaning my 'house' - my bedsit - because 'you're used to it at home and I need to send money home for the younger ones' education'. I had a real job to explain to some of them when they asked what sort of a house I had, and 'where do your servants sleep?' I really could not convince them that I had no servants. They imagined me having a little shed behind a hedge at the bottom of the garden, this was when I said my house is very small. They also didn't understand why I was still working 'at my age' and why I didn't stay at home and let my daughters look after me.
It does not surprise me that in the States they have absolutely no idea of how the vast majority of us live now. Not in the days of Jane Austen!

Have you noticed how Violet always laughs at her own put-downs as though she's just been goosed?

I think it was phoenix who said (on The Archers thread) that Jill Archer does the same.

Maybe they practice on eachother??

merlotgran Sun 01-Nov-15 21:11:57

Go Violet!!! grin

rosequartz Mon 02-Nov-15 14:33:05

Do you think Violet is on GN - and if so, who is she? grin

rosesarered Mon 02-Nov-15 14:51:42

Oh dear, it seems my secret is out, and I did so hope I could fit in here, hahahah ( my just been goosed laugh)!

rosequartz Mon 02-Nov-15 20:10:06

Now I know why you picked your username rosesarered
Very clever!! - ' Roses are Red, Violets are Blue'
We all know the song wink

Did you enjoy the cruise *Violet* sorry, Roses

Just checked that SS Paris didn't sink in 1925, but you're OK until 1939 when it catches fire grin

rosesarered Mon 02-Nov-15 21:24:06

I had a really splendid cruise, thank you, although the Captain was rather a bore, but I met some old friends , The Duke and Duchess of Norfolk (Lavinia and Bertie, or Bongo as his pals know him.) We had a few late night card games and drinks, and I won just over a thousand guineas, which cheered me up no end.My ladies maid almost went over the side one day, she claimed it was the rough seas, but I told her to take more water with it in future! I fell asleep in a very comfortable chair on deck, and when I awoke my nose and cheeks were very pink,I will be wearing pale powder to cover this for quite a while.
Always so nice to return home again, I do hope my son liked the puppy that I sent him ( perhaps It will do the unmentionable on one of Cora's gowns....
Hahaha.)
I fear I shall have to choose a new name, now that I have been outed.

Ana Mon 02-Nov-15 21:34:18

Pity your maid didn't fall in, she deserves a good dunking, and it might have dislodged that dreadful wig! grin

rosequartz Tue 03-Nov-15 11:28:39

Yes, I would have been tempted to give her a helpful push grin

ps the puppy has chewed up Cora's best silk slippers

NotTooOld Tue 03-Nov-15 11:40:52

rosequartz grin

I can't think why Mrs Carson married Mr Carson as he's a completely unreconstructed dinosaur. Surely she must have realised that before agreeing to the nuptials? That bit where he had to cook the dinner was very unfunny, I thought. Was it just me?

As for Lady Mary, she gets more up herself every episode. I do hope nice Tom doesn't marry her but it looks like it might be going that way. Or is Lady Edith's new editor destined for Tom?

Ana Tue 03-Nov-15 11:47:01

Yes, I think it's likely to be the new editor for Tom.

Not only was the Carson cooking bit unfunny, it was quite unbelievable! Would someone as set in their ways as he is really buckle down and actually do it, despite Mrs Hughes only having a 'sprained wrist'...?

He'd more likely have bundled the two of them off to DA's servants' hall for supper...grin

Eloethan Tue 03-Nov-15 12:32:03

nottooold I agree about the cooking the dinner scene. For one thing, I think someone as pompous as him wouldn't have done it and for another I thought his wife wouldn't have had the nerve to be so bossy, otherwise she would presumably have put him straight in the first place.

NotTooOld Wed 04-Nov-15 10:27:14

I'm wondering if someone else is writing the current series, Eloethan. There is more action and the plot moves faster and, as we agree, there are some scenes that don't quite fit.

merlotgran Mon 09-Nov-15 09:33:30

I was disappointed with the last episode. I would have liked Edith to triumph and stick one on Mary by becoming a marchioness.

Her love interest changed from a strong, supportive, good humoured character to a quivering wimp who was terrified of his mother so maybe she had a lucky escape. hmm

Presumably there's a lot on hold for the Christmas special but I hope it's not all about Mary.

Bellanonna Mon 09-Nov-15 09:37:01

Mary's wedding day hairstyle and smile made her look almost likeable

kittylester Mon 09-Nov-15 09:37:41

Well, I'll miss it!!

Luckygirl Mon 09-Nov-15 09:39:34

I could not get my head round the idea that Mary deliberately and spitefully ruined her sister's life, but we were supposed to believe that everyone (including Edith) forgave her and cheered her wedding a few days later. Not credible in my book and a poor end to a good series.

ninathenana Mon 09-Nov-15 09:39:52

It did seem a bit "Let's stick a wedding on the end for a happy ending"
Was anyone else shouting 'b**ch at Lady Mary. She was an awful character last night.
Soo disappointed for Lady Edith.

Teetime Mon 09-Nov-15 09:40:46

Oh what a shame for Edith - I hope she gets her man on Christmas Day although in a way I'd rather see her become a publishing mogul ahead of her time and Mary be a bored county-set misery with an absent playboy husband!

rosesarered Mon 09-Nov-15 09:56:11

Edith's love interest was a bit of a wet blanket though anyway.Plus the sound of his Mother.......!
I think Edith may meet somebody else ( in the Christmas Downton?)
Just rewatched Alea's link to spoof Christmas Downton, almost better than the real thing!grin

tanith Mon 09-Nov-15 09:59:52

I have a inkling maybe Edith's 'old' lover (father of her daughter} will reappear from wherever he went , it wasn't ever brought to closure was it? or did I miss that bit. grin

merlotgran Mon 09-Nov-15 10:00:20

I'm still pinning my hopes on Michael returning in the Christmas special.

henetha Mon 09-Nov-15 10:04:05

Oh, lovely Downton Abbey, how I will miss it. But last night's ending was a tad disappointing I thought. However, all will be resolved in the Christmas special. hopefully. I felt like throwing my slippers at Lady Mary last night though.
