Inspector George Gently.

Did anybody else notice a silly anachronism in last night's Inspector Gently. When they were observing arrivals at the brothel in the opening scenes they described to Ford Zephyr (lovely car, by the way) as having the registration number HUA 222B, but when the WPC was trying to trace the owner of it she gave the number over the telephone as B222 HUA (which would denote a vehicle registered in 1984).

According to Wiki, yellow number plates were compulsory on all vehicles manufactured from 1st January 1973; they had been available as an option since 1968.
From the Wiki 'Inspector George Gently' page: As the series begins, the death penalty is still in effect in Britain, and a trip to the gallows ends some early episodes (capital punishment for murder was abolished in 1964).
So it's just feasible that, 8 years on from that first series in 2007, GG is now in the late 60's, so maybe the yellow plate isn't an anachronism.

We recorded it and watched last night - it was excellent! I especially liked the familiar settings, I was a student in Durham for 3 years and walked across that bridge (?Prebends?) many times. The acting was good, especially Lee Ingleby.
It was a sad ending though - did it really mean that GG has the beginnings of MS?

TriciaF that is what it looks like. I wonder if this will be the last series because of his diagnosis.

Greyduster Thu 07-May-15 10:30:27

My son texted me last night to ask if I was watching this. I said I would happily watch Martin Shaw tying his shoe laces for an hour and a half, never mind being George Gently!

Teetime Thu 07-May-15 12:03:19

Me too grey I like this but LOVED him as the randy Judge John Deed.

Jane10 Thu 07-May-15 12:04:54

OOOh yes teetime! If he was a judge I reckon there could be a crimewave by Grans!

Teetime Thu 07-May-15 16:14:13

Yes I'd be glad to 'see him in his chambers'.

Just seen last night's IGG- he is good isn't he? A little bit chunky in his later years but that's OK.smile

Katek Thu 07-May-15 16:27:03

No problem there Teetime, it would match my, er.....chunkiness!

ninathenana Thu 07-May-15 23:52:12

Teetime shock grin

Ok ladies, form an orderly queue.

Pompa thinks to himself - would they notice if a stood in while he goes for lunch ?

Greyduster Sat 09-May-15 10:58:21

I'm sure you're very lovely, Pompa, but come on....! Interesting that George Gently is a fly fisherman! Another reason to like him!

POGS Sat 09-May-15 11:02:18

I caught up with it last night and I thought it was good.

I don't like the CID sarge character but it is a reflection of life .

Martin Sheen Shaw is a very handsome man, better than Poldark even.

POGS Sat 09-May-15 11:03:56

Where did Sheen come from confused

Mishap Sat 09-May-15 11:09:37

The John Bacchus character is so unpleasant and unattractive.

I am fascinated by the amount of smoking and drinking that goes on in the office!

pompa Sat 09-May-15 11:19:50

There you Go Greyduster, I do have one thing in common with him. But you are very cruel, you could have agreed with me for a moment. sad

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 09-May-15 11:51:51

It goes on for too long. I thought it was really boring. Very hackneyed subject too. Martin Shaw is still very appealing but even that didn't keep me watching till the end.

pompa Sat 09-May-15 12:11:06

Mishap I agree that John Bacchus is everything that I hope I wasn't back in the 60's He sexist, racist and just about any sort of 'ist there is, I squirm at many of his remarks and behaviour. I just hope he gets his comeuppance at some point.

Greyduster Sat 09-May-15 12:12:19

Pompa sadcupcake.

Mishap Sat 09-May-15 12:47:46

But there is some woman who fancies him - unbelievable!

rosesarered Sat 09-May-15 21:16:05

Have never found Martin Shaw appealing tbh. However, he is quite a good actor, so enjoyed the episode I recorded ( the brothel one) and bought it was all very sixties and authentic, sets, cars, clothes, attitudes, language etc.Yes, all the smoking, got a sore throat this week and don't like watching people pulling on a ciggie, however had to look away when watching The Game, as even more smoking going on there ( the MI5 programme.) Also set in the early sixties.

TriciaF Sun 10-May-15 09:16:14

Although the John Bacchus character is unpleasant, I think Lee Ingleby acts the part so well, he seems real. He's been in loads of other things, plays very different characters.
Evidently he's going to be Bob the Builder next smile

glammanana Sun 10-May-15 09:35:36

Judge John Deed is being shown on Drama Channel on Saturday afternoon at about 4pm if you want extra measures of Martin Shaw,he is certainly the most attractive man on TV at the moment and gets better with age imo.

kittylester Sun 10-May-15 15:28:15

Don't you think that Bacchus is beginning to see the error of his ways? I think that was quite typical of that era. (I am only on part 2,the asbestos one, so might think differently after part 3)

Jane10 Wed 13-May-15 21:01:41

Oh no. Something's wrong. Am finding tonight's episode boring. What's wrong with me?!

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 13-May-15 21:27:48

Told you. hmm
