The Radio Times is asking viewers to vote for their favourite children's character - it has an article tracing back the years on children's TV. I wondered what Gransnetters would be. As a child I loved Twizzle, as a teenager it was Magic Roundabout's Dillon (far out man) as an Aunty it was Bob the Builder and as a Grandma it has been Sponge Bob Square Pants- but they are all to old for that now but I take a sneaky peek when DH is looking. What are yours?

I loved The Wooden Tops and never missed it and I also loved to watch Bill & Ben I used to wait every episode for the man at the bottom of the garden to appear but he never did

When the boys were young, they made me watch Mork and Mindy - my first experience of the irrepressible Robin Williams. I had previously dismissed it as 'American rubbish', but it was fun. Same goes for the Simpsons.

Anyone hear Biddy Baxter on desert Island Discs recalling her days on Blue Peter? Excellent programme.

Remember Belle and Sebastian, Robinson Crusoe , The Singing Ringing Tree and The Flashing Blade fondly. Can still sing the song from Flashing Blade.

Oh, [GRANS}; I have just rememberedthe name of that lady with the spotty aeroplane and the little dog; Her name was Aunty MABEL, and her dogs name was PIPPA. I used to watch this when my (now teenage) grandchildren were small.Loved it!.Also, Wonderpets. This would always come on about 8.30am on a weekday, for quarter of an hour.Ide have the kids ready with their coats on and lunch boxes in hand; we would sit and watch, then off we would go flying down the road to get in school gate before the bell rang! Great times.smile
When my own children were young, it was listen with mother on the radio, then later, trumpton town on TVAll the family have fond memories of these times.
And now, pushing 70, I will sometimes watch Shaun the Sheep, which is very amusing(Also, Songe bob squarepants.EEEEEEEh; happy times and simple minds.

If you want to feel really nostalgic about '50s children's TV, indulge yourself with some clips from this site:

I was fond of the Lone Ranger, Mr Pastry and Meet the Penguins!

In student days we used to have those plastic cut outs of Magic Roundabout figures on our cars [of course, in those days students drove clapped out old Ford Pops etc].

liminetta, Auntie Mavis and Pippin! My GD loved Pippin so much that she shouted his name in her sleep!

TV was off the air for the duration when I was a child... but twenty years later I loved The Clangers, and my favourite Magic Roundabout character was Brian, the snail - ever cheerful and optimistic he would always get up Dougal's nose - "'Ullo, old hairy mate!" "Watch it, mollusc..."
Eric Thompson's reinterpretation of the stories and characters was magical!

Much more recently I was impressed by Pocoyo, a Spanish animation series, narrated by Stephen Fry here.

No TV for me till I had done my O levels!
But the absolute best TV for my own kids was the incomparable Tony Hart and Vision On. Perfection.

When I was very young I used to enjoy Mr Turnip- was it with Humphrey Lestocq? I used to see him occasionally on my grandparents' TV.

When GS1 was a toddler he adored Mr.Tumble and now his brother has reached the same age and loves him as well. DD and I secretly enjoy watching Justin in Gigglebiz (obviously we only have it on for the children wink

We didn't have TV until I was 11, so I didn't have a favourite children's TV character. When the boys were little, I loved the Clangers, Paddington and Mr Benn - and the unforgettable Bagpuss.

chloe1984, thinking about it, Picture Book was with Patricia Driscoll?

joannapiano Fri 30-May-14 19:47:50

All my DGC under 7 love Peppa Pig and George. I don't like the way Daddy Pig is always the laughing stock, though.
As I child, I liked Picture Book.
