The Radio Times is asking viewers to vote for their favourite children's character - it has an article tracing back the years on children's TV. I wondered what Gransnetters would be. As a child I loved Twizzle, as a teenager it was Magic Roundabout's Dillon (far out man) as an Aunty it was Bob the Builder and as a Grandma it has been Sponge Bob Square Pants- but they are all to old for that now but I take a sneaky peek when DH is looking. What are yours?

As a granny, it has always been Mr Tumble. He really seems able to relate to the children. Love him! smile

My childhood favourite was Muffin the Mule with Annette Mills (I still have my Muffin puppet hanging on the wall in the 'GC's' bedroom) I only found out recently that she was John Mills' sister!

I have to agree with Jingles and go with Mr Tumble/Justin.( Not sure why, but he reminds me of Mr Pastry). Love they way he reacts with disabled/abled children - that's what it's all about; children never see the differences and just accept.

The Clangers. Bagpuss. But I watched these with the DS. No television when I was growing up! Fortunately, I've been able to indoctrinate the DGS through DVDs. They like Dangermouse as well, I'm glad to say.

As a child, I would never miss an episode of Tinga and Tucker (sp?) with Aunty Jean Morton (strange how I can remember her name).

I did, however, have an arch nemesis and her name was 'Marina' - I was madly in love with Troy Tempest and he was always mooning over her sad

grin

Torchy the battery boy, Twizzle, the Woodentops (Willie and Jenny the twins, Sam the gardener, Mrs Scrubit the housekeeper and the biggest spotty dog you ever did see) grin

As a child my favourite programmes were Black Beauty and On White Horses (can still sing all the words to the theme tune) so unless you count horses as characters I don't have one from that era.
Now I too am a fan of Mr. Tumble though some of his alter egos grate.

No tv for me as a child. As a Mum, liked Johnny Ball, in his 'numbers' tv prog. Can't remember the name of it properly. Also liked Bagpuss and The Clangers. As a Grandma, I would agree with others, that Mr Tumble/Justin is very good, I also like the 2 alien characters in My Parents Are Aliens.

My favorites were Bill & Ben the flowerpot men, especially "little weed".
What was that one with.... Hugh, Pew, Barny McGrew, Cuthbert Dingle and ?.
I know the last one is not quite right, but that's all I can remember while watching with my small children

..... Cuthbert, Dibble & Grub

Camberwick Green, Trumpton or another one that I can't remember

The Clangers and Bagpuss. I think the kids took Clangers and Bagpuss with them when they went away to uni [probably packed by me blush].

The Woodentops and Andy Pandy & Teddy.

More up to date it's got to be Charlie Bear.

Oh this is bringing back so many lovely memories! The Woodentops for me. My daughter who is 33 loved Pullover but I have never find anyone who remembers it. I still love Bagpuss but haven't yet found a Ceebeebies character I am passionate about.

In younger days, my favourite was Noggin the Nog. I now love Sponge Bob!

I used to love Picture Book which was hosted by Patricia ( cannot remember her surname) for some reason as a small child she seemed to be my ideal story teller. My own children's favourite was Mr Benn they enjoyed the way he used to go into the changing room and always come out as a different character.

My earliest memories of children's television were Bill and Ben, but as far as my grandchildren are concerned I would say the Gruffalo is a great favourite and will stand the test of time well.

I have just drawn a blank trying to find 'pullover' on youtube.

KatyK Fri 30-May-14 17:00:52

I hadn't heard of pullover but Googled it and images came up. Can't do links.

Mine was Billy Bean and his Funny Machine. Now I am hooked on Abney and Teal.

joannapiano Fri 30-May-14 19:47:50

All my DGC under 7 love Peppa Pig and George. I don't like the way Daddy Pig is always the laughing stock, though.
As I child, I liked Picture Book.

joannapiano Fri 30-May-14 19:53:11

chloe1984, thinking about it, Picture Book was with Patricia Driscoll?

We didn't have TV until I was 11, so I didn't have a favourite children's TV character. When the boys were little, I loved the Clangers, Paddington and Mr Benn - and the unforgettable Bagpuss.

When I was very young I used to enjoy Mr Turnip- was it with Humphrey Lestocq? I used to see him occasionally on my grandparents' TV.

When GS1 was a toddler he adored Mr.Tumble and now his brother has reached the same age and loves him as well. DD and I secretly enjoy watching Justin in Gigglebiz (obviously we only have it on for the children wink
