anyone else been watching it...I am finding it a good drama, but must admit it has been a bit brutal..especially last week with the young police lady.

Looking forward to tonight's episode but I think a stiff drink will be in order.

Thanks Biker smile

It is still brilliant 4 episodes in and I think next years BAFTA is probably in the bag, at least put forward. If she doesn't win best actress it would be a shame, faultless so far.

It might be violent but it is only telling it as it is, nasty people are just that, nasty. Sometimes a story has to show what actually happens to be credible.

Looking forward to the next episode. Still want to hug the grandson.

Have watched it all on I player. Certainly violent but has me holding my breath. I was a bit put out though because the place mentioned as a good place to bury a body was where I had my wedding reception!

I do find it gripping, but it is also pretty grim.

I found the whole Happy Valley thing a bit too doom-laden for my taste, I'm afraid. Don't think I'll bother to watch the last two episodes. But I would agree that it certainly shows how talented Sarah Lancashire is.

Mind you I thought she was brilliant in Coronation Street too. Do you remember when she asked Ken to teach her French? She said she already knew a bit of French as she had met a man in a bar somewhere who had taught her to say 'Isn't it a lovely day'. Ken asked her to repeat what the man had said and she replied 'Voulez vous choucher avec moi ce soir' grin

BBC Iplayer only keeps programmes for 7 days, unfortunately. This has been a brilliant drama, and what an advancement for Sarah Lancashire from Coronation Street all those years ago.

bikergran Thu 22-May-14 14:40:18

Tegan you may be able to catch up on it on BBC player..but not sure how long the episodes are on the player for...Im pretty sure I have recorded them all..and could always put them on DVDs!! (Im sure I have the instructions somewhere.lol) I don't think thinsgs are repeated the same on BBC of course if you want to watch all the episodes then ..you will have to hang on..I missed the first episode and couldn't weigh up what had happened to the daughter etc..so I caught up on the BBC player.and was well worth it..

Tegan Thu 22-May-14 14:19:56

I wish I'd stuck with it now.

I was not sure if I fancied it, but now find it gripping, but she does seem to be a bit of a loose cannon, although I am sure that is part of the plot.

KatyK Thu 22-May-14 10:12:15

I thought Happy Valley was brilliant.

Fantastic serial, so well written. Sarah Lancashire is a gem AND she is never splashed across the pages of glitzy gossip mags.
Tried to watch the 'new' Wallender Tegan, but dropped off..... oh dear!

petallus Wed 21-May-14 19:38:43

Loved Wallander. Thought it was better than previous episodes I have seen.

Tegan Wed 21-May-14 19:12:19

I started watching it and agree that Sarah Lancashire was very good. But didn't watch the second episode. I know I watch all the scandinoir stuff so I should be immune now but I just found I couldn't cope with another programme where a woman as being raped/abused [murdered even?] by a man. Did anyone watch last Saturdays Wallander by the way? Was looking forward to it but found it boring.

petallus Wed 21-May-14 18:21:54

I take back my previous post where I said I fast-forwarded through the episodes because it was tediously over the top.

Just watched episode 4 and it was so gripping I could hardly breath. I did fast forward but only to avoid seeing Sarah Lancaster being beaten up in the cellar.

Interesting that two of the main actors starred in Benedorm!

I have found it to be one of the best things on TV but this last winter there have been a couple of good detective series - Hinterland being another. Sarah Lancashire is always excellent and such a different character to those in Last Tango and The Paradise.

bikergran Wed 21-May-14 12:28:18

oh yes loved last Tango as well..also we are not too far away from Halifax..so could relate to it.

Aka Wed 21-May-14 12:20:17

Good point Gill ... because Sarah Lancaster's acting is excellent, I tend to forget that the supporting actors are also wonderful and deserve credit too.

A big improvement in some of the wooden tops we've seen recently such as David Tennent shock

whenim64 Wed 21-May-14 11:32:56

Happy Valley would make a great series, wouldn't it?

POGS Wed 21-May-14 10:54:00

Good post Gill

I am also interested in how the sub plots will pan out. There was obviously a spark between the CID officer and Kate when they met again at the station. What will happen to Ryan? The abducted girl seems to have inner self preservation strength. Do you think there will be more series? X

GillT57 Wed 21-May-14 10:41:10

I think it is one of the best dramas we have had in a long time. the writing is excellent, I find myself laughing at things that really aren't funny then feeling guilty as I do (the very first scene when the addict was threatening to set fire to himself), and getting really frustrated by the accountant chap, in other words really engaging with the characters. The descriptions and depictions of the reality of life for the addicted is horrifying, certainly nothing glamorous about it, and the contrast of Tommy Lee looking so innocent/good looking and his vile character is excellent. The theme of what we would consider to be good people going bad through greed or jealousy, the look of shock and affection on the face of Tommy when he realised he had a son..... It merits awards I think. Excellent stuff and Sarah Lancashire is terrific

petallus Wed 21-May-14 10:28:31

It's all a bit tediously over the top for me but I cope by speeding through the boring bits.

I loved Last Tango though.
