Any other sad person watching, now, on BBC 3 the first of the Eurovision Song Contest semi finals????

I think we stand a good chance of getting some points this year, hoo ra.

Soutra Tue 06-May-14 20:17:14

I think we should compose a Gransnet song.
Something like
Congratulations (on reaching 90)!
Zimmer on a string!
Singing high high high, bending low low low
Wondering where and why did my glasses go?

I'm going to a Eurovision Song Contest party on Saturday (held by my brother) where we are all given a country each and have to dress appropriately and take appropriate food.

I have been given Spain. I have already sent off for a headband with a pair of green fluffy maracas springing off it.

petallus Tue 06-May-14 20:25:16

No, that can't be right. It must be the band that is green and fluffy not the maracas.

POGS Tue 06-May-14 20:29:20

I'm quite impressed with the songs so far.

Apparently we get a 'by' tonight as we are one of the top 5 supporters, finance wise. I didn't know that. Why! I would have thought it should be shared costs.

Petallus

Spain must be singing Thursday evening. At least your costume is easy! What if you had Slovenia or Belarus I wouldn't have a clue what costume I would come up with.

Enjoy Saturday, sounds like a silly night. Just what the doctor ordered. wine

I'll check out the betting; I know people who make good money betting on Eurovision wink. Our song is pretty good [girl is from the same 'stable' as Jake Bugg] but I haven't checked out the other songs yet. I love Eurovision.

POGS Tue 06-May-14 21:11:19

Just had an interview with Austria's entry. 'The Bearded Lady.'. Bless him.

Amazing how practically every country has sung in English so far, except for Portugal.

I am tempted to put money on us this year actually.

To pick a nit, maraccas aren't Spanish... they're Latin American.
Castanets, now...

annodomini Tue 06-May-14 21:45:03

I wonder if Russia and Ukraine will vote for each other as they usually do.

POGS Tue 06-May-14 22:06:01

Anno

Both Ukraine and Russia have got through. When Russia was called out the crowd booed, very interesting.

Latvia, Estonia, Albania, Moldova and Portugal were voted out.

Tegan Tue 06-May-14 22:14:00

I really liked the Albanian song. Armenia, Sweden and UK [blimey] are first three in the betting.

annodomini Tue 06-May-14 22:27:31

Wouldn't it be magical if our dear leader had to congratulate a Eurovision winner who won with a song featuring the line 'power to the people'. Well... one can dream.

I hope Molly does well for Great Britain. It is a great song!

My claim to fame, on this thread, is that DD2 & 3 went to primary school with Molly and her brother. I think DD2 'loved' her brother Sam for a while!

Tegan Wed 07-May-14 08:42:44

The Armenian song [favourite] is dull as ditchwater. I think Molly was 'discovered' on Radio Leicester. The song is fantastic. I should have had a bet on it ages ago when I first heard it [and it was a huge price sad].

petallus Wed 07-May-14 09:52:10

Oh feetle, damn! you're right. So I've wasted £4.99! Unless I brazen it out and still wear the maracas.

One 'c' I think!

petallus Wed 07-May-14 09:54:45

Also, I'm so out of touch with the Song Contest, having taken no notice of it for years, that I naively thought they all sang on Saturday and I would definitely be able to cheer Spain along.

I'll watch on Thursday then POGS. Thanks for info.

If Scotand vote 'YES' will they get their own entry?

The UK will of course suffer another national humiliation which probably reflects what other countries think of us, rather than the quality of our entry.

ninathenana Wed 07-May-14 10:59:35

I dread those three words E. S. C. zzzzzzzzzzzz

DH and I have bought a dvd for Saturday night.

POGS Wed 07-May-14 11:00:16

Aka

I know what you mean but have heard the UK entry this year?

KatyK Wed 07-May-14 15:28:56

I don't think they vote for the song any more - it's political and not many countries like us sad

Nonu Wed 07-May-14 20:22:20

Thanks for that TEgan, quite interesting.

POGS Wed 07-May-14 21:48:24

Thanks Tegan

It's in with a shout I think.

I do however agree about the politics behind it all over the last few years.

Tegan Wed 07-May-14 22:01:24

Well, if we don't get votes for that song we never will. However, the one year that we have a typical Eurovision song [and a god one at that]it looks as if it will be won by a country and western type song. We just can't win sad.
