Is it only me or was Vera rubbish last night?

2 hours of my life I'll never get back.

merlotgran Mon 28-Apr-14 20:30:37

I was looking forward to the new series but I quickly lost the plot. I think two hours is too long for a crime drama unless it's really fast paced and Vera plods.

Aka Mon 28-Apr-14 20:31:26

I thought it was just me. Rather disappointing.

whenim64 Mon 28-Apr-14 20:32:16

I got really engrossed in it, but I've never watched Vera before last night.

Aka Mon 28-Apr-14 20:37:27

That's probably it Merlot too long, an hour should suffice.

Maggiemaybe Mon 28-Apr-14 20:49:45

Exactly what I said, Grannyknot! I've never watched it before and it's not an experience I'll be repeating. Lord, it was slow.

Grannyknot Mon 28-Apr-14 20:51:29

SPOILER ALERT in case people haven't watched it.

A big deal was made of the victim wearing a coat, but then when she was stabbed and getting on and off the carriages, there was no sign of her having a coat either wearing it or carrying one. The perpetrator was a most unconvincing murderer. The whole story was far fetched.

I used to like it, the earlier series.

whenim64 Mon 28-Apr-14 21:11:02

Didn't she give her coat to the woman who was drinking and working the streets? That was how Vera knew the woman had been on the scene around the time of the stabbing.

Ana Mon 28-Apr-14 21:21:42

Yes, but I never noticed the murdered woman wearing a coat at any time. That was a glaring error - a vital piece of information which wasn't conveyed to the viewer but which was just presented as a matter of fact much later on.

I stopped caring who'd done it and why after about an hour...

whenim64 Mon 28-Apr-14 22:03:58

She had a coat when she was coming out of the building (earlier on in the programme) where the detective's child saw her and she smiled at her. The child drew a picture of her in the coat, and Vera recognised it on the woman she had given it to.

Grannyknot Mon 28-Apr-14 22:36:33

And I thought the child drew her from having seen her in the train (so that's why I couldn't work out where the coat comes in). Clearly I must pay more attention grin

Ana Mon 28-Apr-14 22:42:27

It was still a bit daft - the girl kept saying the lady was 'so cold', yet she only prodded her shoulder, and it was far too soon after she'd died to for her be cold. Unsatisfactory all round.

whenim64 Mon 28-Apr-14 22:59:24

This is giving me the giggles now.....the girl said the lady was so cold because it was a winter's day and she had given her coat away. In the book it was snowing that day - can't remember if it showed snow in the episode. After the girl had seen the old lady with her coat on, she'd met the woman who drinks (Dee?) and treated her to tea and cakes, then given her the coat because it was freezing. Dee went off and picked a man up, headed for the train and saw the old lady trying to get away from someone. She switched carriages but was stabbed without realising it, sat down as she felt faint from blood loss.............

Ana Mon 28-Apr-14 23:03:05

Well it didn't seem as though it was the middle of winter in last night's episode, when! And the coat was a light mac, not very useful in freezing conditions! grin

Grannyknot Mon 28-Apr-14 23:04:51

when you will have to write episode guides for us smile!

whenim64 Mon 28-Apr-14 23:07:01

grin I usually fall asleep after 15 minutes!

I too was VERY disappointed with Sunday's edition of Vera, even more so as I usually love it and had been looking forward to this new series. I found it SO slow, disjointed and frankly boring! In the end I couldn't have cared less who did what or why! Also Vera herself was a bit too made up and tidy, I much preferred her a bit ragged round the edges. Let's hope this Sunday's is better, else I won't be watching any more.

I have written on here before about recording and sub-titles and sometimes seeing the same words come up throughout the programme, but no sub-titles This happened with the recording we did of Vera this week, wanted to watch last night, but the only sub-titles which appeared were those of the opening line of the song. Anyone else record and have that problem? We shall watch on ipad, but maybe not bother at all, since they are one off programmes. We often record ITV so that we do not have to watch the adverts.

Maniac Thu 08-May-14 14:57:28

I've lived in Northumberland and am familiar with Geordie accent but found much of this episode inaudible.
I can never get sub-titles on catch-up recordings!!

gillybob Thu 08-May-14 15:03:53

Funnily enough I watched Vera for the first time on Sunday and found myself picking away at her "Geordie" accent which really wasn't very good at all.

numberplease Thu 08-May-14 18:19:10

Well I love it, so there!

Eloethan Thu 08-May-14 19:14:12

I love it too. I think Blenda Blethyn is a great actress, and the whole cast of this drama is very good.

durhamjen Fri 09-May-14 00:31:18

I like it, too. Have recorded and watched both stries so far, and enjoyed them both. Maybe we watch them to see the landscape that we know?
I know Vera plods, but she's supposed to, surely. Some of the other police programmes are far too fast for me to keep up with.

durhamjen Fri 09-May-14 00:31:45

Stories, I meant.

PRINTMISS Fri 09-May-14 07:49:51

I enjoy the programme very much, just wondered if anyone else had had problems with the sub-titles, perhaps not everyone uses them. We have them on all the time.
