Just settling down to watch this with great expectations smile

Grannyknot Wed 12-Mar-14 14:44:16

It probably ran off as dogs do and she'd have to go and find it! smile

A dog couldn't get very far on a small island - probably went home of its own accord if it knew what was good for it.

bags introduced me to the authoress...Ann Cleeves. 'Raven Black' was a book that made me hungry for more of her work. I'm now reading 'Dead Water.' Thanks, bags smile

Grannyknot Trailers are a curse. I loathe them. Anyone would think that the viewer needs titillating in order to stay with the on-going drama...well, we do not. hmm

petallus maybe the ravens/crows carried the dog away to their nest.

Didn't like it as much as the Bridge but I'm definitely up for the next episode.
The theme music was very like the Bridge so I think it's probably aiming for the same market.

Watched the first episode but found it incredibly slow and tedious. Couldn't understand half of what was being said either. I'll give it a miss.

Have now watched the first episode. Have mixed feelings about it. It was too slow for DH [but that isn't a problem for me, as I quite like 'slow' on tv.] Bleak scenery [felt relieved that I didn't live there] but watchable overall.Believable characters and dialogue.I will certainly watch all the episodes.Took a while to work out what the characters were saying, but then you just 'get it'. Is Dougie Henshall's character meant to be so enigmatic?Does he, as they say 'have a past'? I haven't read any of the books.

Saw this weeks conclusion and was flabergasted to see the killer was not the one in the book. Despite this I am really enjoying the programme.

rosesarered, the episodes are all out of the order of the books. Jimmy Perez does have a back story and it's a pity that they couldn't have fleshed that out. The name is supposed to come from an ancestor washed ashore from a Spanish galleon, wrecked in 1588, when a storm destroyed the Armada. There are quite a few tales of that kind round the coasts of Scotland.

Love it, the scenery reminds me of my beloved Hebrides. Have just watched two episodes on 'catchup' as have been away for a week.

Enjoyed it....our home grown Scandi Noir. Cannot believe the silly comments in the Times newspapers tv supplement.......several people saying they needed subtitels as could not understand a word.....daft!

Ana Thu 03-Apr-14 19:48:29

I couldn't quite believe that so many seem unable to understand a Scottish accent, either, Hilda. I made a point while watching the latest episode of trying to see what the problem was - but couldn't!

I'm not Scottish, nor have I any connections with Scotland, but it was all perfectly clear to me.

rosesarered Thu 03-Apr-14 20:59:23

thanks anno for that info, yes, a bit of the back story would have been better for an understanding of Perez.Am enjoying the series overall, but you do need to tune into the accent and it takes a while [a wee while!]
Ana perhaps you had another life there in the dim and distant past, but to us soft Southerners, the accent can be hard going.

Ana Thu 03-Apr-14 21:12:55

Yes, sorry roses, didn't mean to sound so incredulous as to doubt that people really can't make the accent out. I think I just have an 'ear' for accents!

broomsticks Thu 03-Apr-14 22:03:34

I'm enjoying the series but I must admit I find some of the accents difficult. Mainly the police woman.

annodomini Thu 03-Apr-14 22:43:42

If they were all speaking with real Shetland accents, you probably would need subtitles. The actors are doing their best, but there's a good old mixture of various Scottish accents. I noticed the Chief Inspector from Taggart in the episode this week.

I think a lot hinges around the lead character for me. And I like the lead character in Shetland so I like the series and I especially like the beautiful scenery. A lovely place to visit.

Got to say that the dramatization of Ann Cleeves books much better than her writing.
