Just settling down to watch this with great expectations smile

Got to say that the dramatization of Ann Cleeves books much better than her writing.

Granart Fri 04-Apr-14 17:04:19

I think a lot hinges around the lead character for me. And I like the lead character in Shetland so I like the series and I especially like the beautiful scenery. A lovely place to visit.

annodomini Thu 03-Apr-14 22:43:42

If they were all speaking with real Shetland accents, you probably would need subtitles. The actors are doing their best, but there's a good old mixture of various Scottish accents. I noticed the Chief Inspector from Taggart in the episode this week.

broomsticks Thu 03-Apr-14 22:03:34

I'm enjoying the series but I must admit I find some of the accents difficult. Mainly the police woman.

Ana Thu 03-Apr-14 21:12:55

Yes, sorry roses, didn't mean to sound so incredulous as to doubt that people really can't make the accent out. I think I just have an 'ear' for accents!

rosesarered Thu 03-Apr-14 20:59:23

thanks anno for that info, yes, a bit of the back story would have been better for an understanding of Perez.Am enjoying the series overall, but you do need to tune into the accent and it takes a while [a wee while!]
Ana perhaps you had another life there in the dim and distant past, but to us soft Southerners, the accent can be hard going.

Ana Thu 03-Apr-14 19:48:29

I couldn't quite believe that so many seem unable to understand a Scottish accent, either, Hilda. I made a point while watching the latest episode of trying to see what the problem was - but couldn't!

I'm not Scottish, nor have I any connections with Scotland, but it was all perfectly clear to me.

HildaW Thu 03-Apr-14 19:40:52

Enjoyed it....our home grown Scandi Noir. Cannot believe the silly comments in the Times newspapers tv supplement.......several people saying they needed subtitels as could not understand a word.....daft!

Flowerofthewest Thu 03-Apr-14 05:03:35

Love it, the scenery reminds me of my beloved Hebrides. Have just watched two episodes on 'catchup' as have been away for a week.

annodomini Wed 02-Apr-14 23:07:18

rosesarered, the episodes are all out of the order of the books. Jimmy Perez does have a back story and it's a pity that they couldn't have fleshed that out. The name is supposed to come from an ancestor washed ashore from a Spanish galleon, wrecked in 1588, when a storm destroyed the Armada. There are quite a few tales of that kind round the coasts of Scotland.

Eleanorre Wed 02-Apr-14 22:29:31

Saw this weeks conclusion and was flabergasted to see the killer was not the one in the book. Despite this I am really enjoying the programme.

Have now watched the first episode. Have mixed feelings about it. It was too slow for DH [but that isn't a problem for me, as I quite like 'slow' on tv.] Bleak scenery [felt relieved that I didn't live there] but watchable overall.Believable characters and dialogue.I will certainly watch all the episodes.Took a while to work out what the characters were saying, but then you just 'get it'. Is Dougie Henshall's character meant to be so enigmatic?Does he, as they say 'have a past'? I haven't read any of the books.

NannaAnna Fri 14-Mar-14 22:16:19

Watched the first episode but found it incredibly slow and tedious. Couldn't understand half of what was being said either. I'll give it a miss.

broomsticks Fri 14-Mar-14 21:46:27

petallus maybe the ravens/crows carried the dog away to their nest.

Didn't like it as much as the Bridge but I'm definitely up for the next episode.
The theme music was very like the Bridge so I think it's probably aiming for the same market.

Grannyknot Trailers are a curse. I loathe them. Anyone would think that the viewer needs titillating in order to stay with the on-going drama...well, we do not. hmm

soop Wed 12-Mar-14 16:57:32

bags introduced me to the authoress...Ann Cleeves. 'Raven Black' was a book that made me hungry for more of her work. I'm now reading 'Dead Water.' Thanks, bags smile

annodomini Wed 12-Mar-14 15:17:01

A dog couldn't get very far on a small island - probably went home of its own accord if it knew what was good for it.

Grannyknot Wed 12-Mar-14 14:44:16

It probably ran off as dogs do and she'd have to go and find it! smile

petallus Wed 12-Mar-14 12:09:01

Just watched the first episode after seeing it recommended here. Found it very watchable. Good acting, lovely bleak scenery etc.

One niggly little question. In the scene at the beginning where the woman in the red coat finds the body, she has her dog with her. In following scenes where the woman is still waiting with the body and the police have turned up, the dog has vanished.

I wonder where it went.

Could there have been a slip up in continuity?

merlotgran Wed 12-Mar-14 09:16:06

We will just HAVE to watch Line of Duty as it's so gripping. We'll probably watch Law and Order on +1. A late night, I think.

Charleygirl Wed 12-Mar-14 08:32:49

I will be watching Line of duty and recording Law and Order as I loved the previous series and also the American version on channel 5.

PRINTMISS Wed 12-Mar-14 08:02:08

I enjoyed it, had the sub-titles on, and think the atmosphere created is so soothing, despite the theme. Liked the last series too, so looking forward to some good viewing for a few weeks. We also enjoy DCI Banks, but I did just mention to someone the other day, that we seem to spend an awful lot of tv viewing time watching crime stories. Line of Duty tonight or Law and Order?

mollie65 Wed 12-Mar-14 07:51:07

started to watch it just to see if it was from the Ann cleeves book (which are all excellent) but found the accent difficult and kept remembering the story as I read it - it is always so difficult to see visualised and adapted a character and story you know from the book - same with DCI Banks and Rebus sad
loved the scenery though.

NfkDumpling Wed 12-Mar-14 07:19:02

Loved it - but haven't read the books so no preconceptions. Must remember to record next weeks as we're away.

Grannyknot Wed 12-Mar-14 06:42:43

That should be tune, not time. Thanks for nothing, auto correction.
