Just been watching The One Show where Anne Reid sounded a bit underwhelmed with her Gransnet award.

I'm glad I voted for Mrs. Brown now hmm

Eloethan Tue 26-Nov-13 19:39:41

Well perhaps she didn't want to be associated with the Gransnet means-tested survey - I certainly didn't.

merlotgran Tue 26-Nov-13 19:43:02

I shouldn't think it was anything to do with that. It sounded like she made a comment to Alex Jones in the Green Room which was repeated on air and she had to do a 'Er......On second thoughts' comment.

Maybe some stars would prefer not to appeal to grandparents.

I love her in her acting roles and she looks great but when I've seen her interviewed she seems a bit 'well it's no more than I deserve-ish'.

That's the problem with liking actors isn't it? We like them in a role, or even several roles, but we may not like them in real life. Too many people confuse the characters they play with the person themselves, big mistake!

KatyK Thu 28-Nov-13 10:28:00

Roses - you are right. They only let us see what they want us to see. As we can see from recent events, we don't know they at all. And how could we?

Is a web chat called for so that we can set her straight about what an honour we have bestowed on her?

merlotgran Thu 28-Nov-13 13:32:05

Yes, anno and then she can explain why she was so dismissive about it. hmm

Standing up to my full height, and in best telephone voice.

'Ahem....do you know WHO we are?'

Really! That should bring her to her senses. grin

ffinnochio Thu 28-Nov-13 13:48:18

when grin

ffinnochio Thu 28-Nov-13 13:49:33

.....and I haven't a clue who she is hmm

Gally Thu 28-Nov-13 13:51:16

Well she's certainly older than a lot of us, so she can't complain on that score; according to Wiki she has a son, so perhaps she is a Granny too? So no complaints there. I went off 'her' on Tuesday when her character's nasty side in 'Halifax' became more obvious; perhaps she's like that in real life wink
I am a bit disappointed as I really thought she wouldn't be a lovey - just goes to show how wrong you can be.
Definitely think she should be dragged brought onto GN to explain her 'underwhelmment' give her side of the story

What exactly is the award?

Gold knitting needles on a plinth?

Garden Centre Vouchers?

Cashmere bed socks?

A year's subscription to Tena lady?

A framed Gransnet tea towel?

A musical loo roll cover as most unwanted trophies tend to end up in the smallest room?

grin

Riverwalk Thu 28-Nov-13 13:58:11

I don't know who she is but am curious as to what it was she said!

Merlot grin

merlotgran Thu 28-Nov-13 14:12:07

Here we are!!

If it doesn't start at the right place, run it on to 8.28 mins.

Riverwalk Thu 28-Nov-13 15:46:28

Thank you Merlot, yes she did brush it aside, or at least not seem to be particularly pleased!

I googled her and know who she is now - Ken Barlow's wife - a cross to bear for anyone! grin

cazthebookworm Fri 29-Nov-13 08:19:30

Yes, I saw her on Celebrity Antique Road Trip and she didn't seem to have much of a personality, and one of those whose look says "don't you know who I am."

feetlebaum Fri 29-Nov-13 09:08:12

Just as well not to confuse actress and character portrayed -- Anne Reid appeared in Doctor Who as a Plasmavore - she sucked all the blood out of Roy Marsden - with a straw.

Only not really...

Bellasnana Sat 30-Nov-13 05:31:13

Didn't any of you see her in 'Dinnerladies' with Victoria Wood? It was a good laugh, I thought.

Icyalittle Sat 30-Nov-13 09:03:58

How was the award decided? And what exactly was it for? I'm obviously not paying proper attention (sitting in the back row comparing text messages with my mates maybe....)

janeainsworth Sat 30-Nov-13 10:34:48

To be fair to Anne Reid, the female presenter mentioned the Gransnet award in a rather disdainful way, in a tone of voice which implied it was something the cat had brought in.
The power of suggestion is very strong - people have an inbuilt mechanism to agree with what has been suggested and if the presenter had said something like 'And the Gransnet membership has voted you their personality of the year, that's a wonderful/amazing tribute, isn't it?' in an enthusiastic tone, Anne Reid would probably have agreed with her and said she was thrilled!

To those who don't know who Anne Reid is, or remember her only as Valerie Barlow, Last Tango is something else and well worth watching.

Sorry ladies, I love Anne Reid, everything she does is fine by me. wink

merlotgran Sat 30-Nov-13 12:21:37

Poor old Roy Marsden.....and he's such a nice bloke. DD1 used to work for him when he was married to Polly Hemingway.
