No, don't get your hopes up, ladies, it hasn't got him in it - it's a six-part prequel which starts tonight on BBC 4 starring Michele Riondino and might be worth a look...

It is lovely - I enjoy it loads. And the young guy is sufficiently bandy to be plausible!

Deedaa Sun 22-Sept-13 21:52:04

I'm liking this more and more smile

I went on a cruise around Sicily in the spring and have spent the new episodes going look we walked up / down / round there. It's a mishmash of places but I wanted to go back.

I was annoyed earlier when I caught sight if this thread and realised that I'd forgotten to record it. I thought DH watched it under sufferance last week, he hadn't realised it was subtitles.
However he has come up trumps and sorted out how to get it on catch up through the computer. Says it's surprisingly hypnotic. smile

I watched Montalbano last night and also fell asleep for a brief period in the middle..too cosy and too much wine methinks wink

Do you remember the days when watching tv was an activity in itself with the whole family gathered round. Now we seem to be so easily distracted and are constantly multitasking. Is it a sign that the programmes are not as good or is it just because in the early days tv was so exciting and new? Just musing about it.

Marelli Sun 15-Sept-13 18:00:52

I agree, wisewoman! I very rarely sit and watch a programme without laptop or my knitting on my knee (sometimes both). smile

wisewoman Sun 15-Sept-13 17:54:38

Does anyone else find these BBC four films with subtitles are a good way to relax. You can't really do anything else while reading subtitles - you can't even jump up and down or fidget in case you miss something. It has made me realise how often I watch tv while reading gransnet and other distractions at the same time.

Tegan Sun 15-Sept-13 17:30:44

O nod off during the evening now but thankfully woke up last night as the film Starter for Ten started; never got round to reading the book but I thoroughly enjoyed the film smile.

Marelli Sun 15-Sept-13 17:16:35

Moomin, that's why I have to watch it on Catch-up! Find it impossible to watch TV until 11pm and Montalbano does need constant watching! Actually I fell asleep while watching it this afternoon too...but only for a minute or two blush!

moomin Sun 15-Sept-13 17:12:49

Must be old age, but I find myself drifting off to sleep quite often around 9:30 pm most evenings if watching TV and it's fatal if watching Montalbano sad it's all so quick-fire if I miss 30 seconds of dialogue every so often I start losing the plot (not that unusual as it seems to be my default mode!).

I am enjoying this series though, almost as good as 'old' Montalbano!

Marelli Sun 15-Sept-13 17:07:27

Couldn't get the first episode on Catch-up, but managed to get last night's one and enjoyed it so much. Laughed out loud at Cattarella! Wasn't the scene where Salvo's father visited and left him wine rather poignant? We've all been there, haven't we...knowing when it's time to go, so we make all sorts of excuses wink!

soop Sun 15-Sept-13 12:50:43

wisewoman grin

soop Sun 15-Sept-13 12:50:04

Well, I think that the young Montalbano is as dishy as the mature Montalbano. wink
We thoroughly enjoyed the last series and have so far enjoyed the new. There is no "in yer face" violence or bad language. The scenery is beautiful. The language and characters, delightful. All good stuff. sunshine

Grannyknot Wed 11-Sept-13 12:47:44

I was musing ... so how did he end up on his own as an adult? - the older Montalbano seems to have intermittent girlfriend(s)/slightly chequered love life. Now I'll find out!

wisewoman Wed 11-Sept-13 12:02:57

He is just as gorgeous as the older one! Much to my surprise I enjoyed it just as much. Didn't notice the legs - too busy looking at eyes and hair.

janerowena Wed 11-Sept-13 11:31:27

I loved it. I was getting serious withdrawal symptoms when Montalbano ended. I found what I missed most was the opening music and overhead views of Sicily though!

Grannyknot Tue 10-Sept-13 14:45:35

grin

Mamie Tue 10-Sept-13 08:41:09

Oh how frustrating. Here I am stuck with French or Catalan telly, the sun, the Mediterranean 10 metres away, all the anchovy paste I can eat and no Montelbano. Though Mr. Mamie can still do a mean crawl across the bay....

Grannyknot Tue 10-Sept-13 08:24:16

Mamie - and the legs!

MaggieP Mon 09-Sept-13 23:25:38

As a fan of the older Salvo, I wondered how much I would enjoy the new younger one, having just watched it tonight, I really enjoyed the new series, he is a delight, and I feel it can only get better!grin

Grannyknot Mon 09-Sept-13 22:32:35

I am smitten by Il giovane Montalbano. And he certainly has the mannerisms.

petallus Mon 09-Sept-13 10:57:54

Just watched it and to my surprise I loved it. The young M is as fascinating as the older one. I too looked to see if the legs were bandy and they were!

mrsb Sun 08-Sept-13 20:56:38

If I can't have old Montalbano then I will settle for watching the young one. No swimming yet but plenty of steps. Wondering when Livia will appear.

gracesmum Sun 08-Sept-13 20:39:01

The second half of Last Night has almost become a caricature of itself, hasn't it? Marin Alsop is a wonderful conductor but I fondly remember the likes of Andrew Davis and loved the Sea Shanties.
