The One Show's Alex Jones

I can't stand that show, they ask a couple of inane questions and just when the guest starts to talk, they move on to some other banal subject.

Must be very irritating for the celebs.

Oh come on! Everyone wants an answer to that question! (Except gransnetters of course)

I thought his answer was quite telling - "I haven't thought about it. Not "we", "I"!

Poor girl.

The interview was fine. Laid back and friendly.

I knew you'd say that J08. If only I had your kind nature.

I truly don't want to know and after seeing last night's documentary on Andy, they seemed more 'married' than I have ever been. Sadly.

Oh folks do love having a real go at TV types (who are employed to do a job and often are given a brief if not an actual script to follow)......if its not Julia Bradbury its someone else. There will always be people we take 'agin' in real life as well as those on tv.... My view is that if you do like anyone its more your problem then theirs, so I just don't have too much to do with them. Hells teef would be a boring world if we all got on with everyone!

P.S. However, I exclude from this rational anyone being deliberately offensive or deeply unprofessional (John Inverdale's latest effort springs to mind).

We rarely watch The One Show and I didn't see yesterday's interview but I hate to admit I find her voice totally irritating. It's too high and squeaky for my liking, I can barely understand a word she says and it's not due to her accent...

We rarely watch The One Show. It has trashed any image it might have had as a current affairs show and is now no more adult than Blue Peter. After a couple of inane questions the first guest usually sits in total boredom while Matt Baker talks a load of drivel to the next guest. The request for photos of silly subjects is childish.

Sycophantic laughter from the camera crew only makes it worse.

Hilda I'm sorry but I do not believe she is presenting as per her brief - she is being her own very silly self but I expect that that was why the BBC chose her, which is really what I'm railing against, I suppose.

Merlot I do so agree with your Blue Peter reference - that's exactly what crossed my mind last night - although that could be an insult to Valerie Singleton.

I know the PC beeb wants to embrace all cultures and regions but do they HAVE to have such strong regional accents that they are almost incomprehensible?

Adore her Welsh accent. Reminds me of "home". She can therefore do no wrong.

Ah, now I know who we are talking about - I watched it just once - I think Karen Gillan was a guest - and the female presenter drove me nuts - she quacks!

That's how most women talk in S Wales. For the deeper version see "nessa" in Gavin and Stacey. But Stacey had the higher pitched version nailed.
High time we had more regional accents. Media still terribly dominated by S England. You have been spoilt too long Feetlebaum.
It's a light, early evening chat show for goodness sake not Newsnight.

I think Alex Jones may possibly be more intelligent than she manages to appear - a) she went to Aberystwyth uni like wot DS did and b) it would not after all be difficult.
But I agree - the One Show is now unwatchable. It used to be quite interesting when it first started and I didn't even mind Christine Thing and the fat bloke. But its day has long gone. And why is Matt Baker on absolutely everything? Even Countryfile gets switched off the moment I so much as hear his voice.

specki4eyes, I suspect the BBC knew exactly what they were getting when they employed her...I was not actually defending her or the programme...its all pretty daft. I am just not a fan of some of the unpleasant things that are said about X Y or Z - it can all get a bit too personal.

I'm slightly shocked that there are so many threads on GN that criticise young successful women.
I do sometimes criticise celebs, its true, but I hope it is for what they do e.g. advertising payday loans, saying idiotic things about poverty on TV (Rick stein thread) but not for their looks or their voices.
Don't notice any threads criticising male celebs for their looks or their accents or their high voices

The One Show is light entertainment and usually doesn't pretend to be anything else. What if both the presenters have regional accents? The majority of the population has some accent or another and I happen to find theirs rather attractive and far from incomprehensible. I agree with you Jess. I was pretty fed up with all the vitriol once poured on Fiona Bruce on this site.

Why has this become a thread about regional accents? I don't object to regional accents per se - my point is that I just can't bear the harsh squeaking and quacking combined with inane programme content and meaningless interviews. Why should light entertainment mean drivel?

My early morning radio station is BBC Newcastle(short a) and believe me the determination to be local can drive you mad. If they can fit in yer mam or me mam or the bairns they will. And the moronic debate about Newcastle or Sunderland football makes you want to weep with sorrow at the educational standards in the NE. I only listen for the local roads and weather then turn it off.

My husband refuses to stay in the room if The One show is on, so it rarely is. I think Alex Jones was just brought in as a clone of Christine thing - only with less personality. Actually I was impressed when Christine did her water skiing across the Channel. I thought that took real courage.
It all depends what sort of accent you like. I could listen to Ian Stewart telling me about volcanoes for ever, but I'm not keen on listening to scottish women. And I REALLY like a nice southern Irish accent.

Most irritating Scottish accent? Lorraine Kelly.

Most irritating male with a squeaky voice? Chris Evans.

Ffffyfe Robertson (I think) oh and Alan Whicker then. Ms Jones is fine for what she does. It's a light programme. Just reading the TV supplement from The Times; lots of vitriolic comments about Julia Bradbury. Which women on TV do pass muster?
