Airport meal deals

We're due to fly from Manchester Terminal2 in a few weeks. We have in the past bought sandwich meal deals to eat on the plane. Last time we flew we chose a Boots meal deal each. There wasn't a lot of choice and the sandwiches were absolutely disgusting. The other options are M&S before departures or WH Smith. There is also the option of making them myself. Any suggestions welcome. Thank you

You won’t find a Boots at Manchester they have gone . I was really surprised as they were so busy with people buying meal deals and last minute toiletries. I got a sandwich from Smiths but not a great choice 🙁

I always pay for a lounge and eat and drink whatever I want.

How about having a meal or a snack in the airport before your flight?
That’s what we used to do.

The only budget airlines we use are Jet2 or EasyJet. I either get a coffee and chocolate bar or a vodka and tonic along with some crisps from inflight service. Depending on the time of the flight.

Have never felt the need for a sandwich on a short haul flight 🤷‍♀️

Make them yourself tgen you know how good they are

If we have a very early morning flight , I can’t face breakfast early . I buy a sandwich from marks the day before. I check the useby date . And stick it in my carryon bag with some fruit . And have it on the flight with a coffee .
I don’t take cereal or protein bars incase of nut allergies.

The obviously should say nice bread 🙄

km14 Thu 24-Sept-26 06:21:57

Thank you for all these suggestions. I think I am leaning towards making my own. That way I can get some really Nic bread the day before. Jeanieallergy21 you can take food through security just not drinks.

I always make our own. A good quality roll, Brie, cranberry and walnuts for me and the same for DH, but green grapes instead of cranberry. A couple of cereal bars and it’s a good picnic!

Oooh, that's got me juices flowing! I hope the corner shop has got some Brie tomorrow when I pop in (but home-made plum chutney for me instead of cranberry).

Half of the fun of going away, is to start as you mean to go on.
Don’t make your own sandwiches. Just use the in-flight service.
Expensive perhaps, but include that in your holiday budget.
I would hate to be fussing over sandwiches, on the morning of my flight

When you tally up the cost of the high cost sandwiches its better value in the lounges probably.

Nannan2 Wed 23-Sept-26 23:44:17

In our opinion, the lounges are well worth the money, and are like a luxurious treat for the start of the holiday. We've always enjoyed them, and you can find good deals online for reducing the cost.

Have always made my own food for the plane. That way I know the quality and I never have a dodgy tummy after home made bread which is different from all sandwiches on the market. Every sandwich seller including the lovely Pret must use flour that's adulterated with additives - why would I take a folate supplement when there's already enough in my diet? And the same with other vitamins and minerals. That said, I do buy a choc bar in Pret - that's the treat.

Sago

No sandwich that has been refrigerated is tasty.

It’s taken me years to realise this!

Make your own but not egg!

Don't take ham sandwiches either if you're likely to be more than two or three hours before you eat them

Fallingstar Wed 23-Sept-26 17:49:17

You can take food but not drink, we would buy a drink in departures.

I didn't think you were allowed to take food and drink through security

This.

I'd also always go for Prêt. My daughter was a day patient in a hospital this week and I took her favourite in for her to eat when she woke up, she was probably more delighted to see the sandwich than she was me!

How would the airplane staff know the difference?!

Patsy70 Wed 23-Sept-26 17:14:57

I wasn’t aware that you could take your own prepared food, and always thought it was a con to get passengers to buy food at the airport.

leeds22 Wed 23-Sept-26 17:11:28

Plenty of choice for sandwiches at Manchester T2 but I usually go for Pret. On the way home I survive on a banana, Twix and coffee. DH can't be bothered getting a sandwich before we fly but then moans about the lack of choice on the flight, he never learns!

Paperbackwriter Wed 23-Sept-26 16:12:06

I suppose it depends how long the flight is. I think I'd rather do without food at all on any flight under 3 hours. Or just a banana. (Plus a bloody Mary on the plane!)

mokryna Wed 23-Sept-26 15:51:40

Don’t buy any sandwiches at the big outlets. I use the free Yuka app and I was so disappointed with the low scores these ready made sandwiches scored because of all the additional additives hidden in the food. Take your own.

MT62 Wed 23-Sept-26 15:47:45

Why don’t you take your own sandwich

4allweknow Wed 23-Sept-26 15:36:07

Depends on how much you want to pay and the stores available, also times you are flying. Not all airports gave Pret or have stores open 24 hours. You'll need to shop around.
