Snootiness about holiday destinations

Had great holidays in Lanzarote many years ago. Lovely and warm in Jan/Feb.
We had a motor home and have travelled far and wide in it, but as we’ve got older, we decided to change it for a caravan. We’re much happier because we have the car for getting around, or having day trips. We’ve found some great sites and enjoy going as often as we can. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but we love it. No rushing down for breakfast, just a lovely leisurely morning. We mostly eat out for lunch and dinner, but if we don’t feel like it, we can soon rustle something up. There are adult only sites too and they’re perfect during the school summer holidays. We too have had snobby remarks Lizzie, but we ignore it.

At the moment we use it when we go to visit our daughter and her family rather than staying in the Premier Inn.
Our granddaughter loves her caravan sleepovers 🥰

Obviously it is personal preference and I can’t understand why someone would look down on anyone just because their idea of holidays is different .
I’ve been to Lanzerote and Benidorm and Blackpool and I wouldn’t go back. We have had a touring caravan for more than 40 years and have often had people say turn their noses up. So what, we have enjoyed it just as much as we have enjoyed holidays in hotels in various far flung destinations.

Yes, those folk making disparaging remarks about a place are usually ignorant and ill-informed. I studied in Madrid in the 1960s and explored much of Spain Wow. So many contrasting regions, so much culture, wonderful scenery, architecture, food, etc. So many people these days assume ‘Holiday in Spain’ is lying on a beach in the heat of the Costa del Sol ( though nothing wrong with that ) but decide they don’t like Spain for that reason. Similarly I’m always annoyed by someone saying eg “I don’t like the French” without ever having met a French person!

I love a cheap and cheerful (sun coupon ) holiday and couldn't care less about snobby looks or comments I sleep really well we eat out or have homemade simple meals using farm shop ingredients or market buys My holiday my money my choice

I worked one winter in Puerto Del Carmen in Lanzarote, I detested it. Nothing but cockroaches and wind, but then I visited different resorts on the island and they were much nicer.

I can't understand people being so snobbish about holiday destinations, especially when they have never been. There are so many amazing places at home (for me the UK) and abroad. I've only been to Lanzarote once and loved it. I've also loved Turkey, Croatia, Thailand among many others for lots of different reasons. Harris27 I went on a 'girlie' holiday to Seahouses last year and had a fab time, the fish and chips were some of the best I've tasted. Witzend the best baguettes for me were fresh from the oven when staying at my penfriends in rural France - her dad was the 'boulanger' and her bedroom was directly above the bakery, I'll never forget waking up to the amazing smell

We had a day trip to Benidorm when we were staying in another part of Spain. We loved it. Beautiful beaches, cheap bars and cafes, a great market and lots of fun.

I used to attend a Spanish Group. Several were real old snobs and very cliquey. There was a lovely retired Doctor in the group and he was so nice. We were discussing holidays and he said he and his wife were going to Benidorm to brush up his language skills.

Some of the faces were 😱😱 and got very sniffy with him about his choice of resort. Two weeks later he came back saying it was the best holiday they had had in years. He brought pics of his hotel and it was indeed stunning. He said all the staff were keen to encourage his use of their language and he felt like a VIP.

My DD works in Dubai and last year I spent three weeks with her over Christmas/New Year. It has never been my idea of a holiday destination, but I wanted to spend the time with DD and at that time of year it wasn't unbearably hot, which is the case for much of the year. We did some interesting things there and I experienced a place I never imagined I'd ever visit.
Every destination has good and bad points and we all look for different things in a holiday. There are plenty other places I'd not fancy but each to his own I say!

We had a week's holiday in East Grinstead staying in an apartment at Standen House, which we used as a base for visiting lots of beautiful gardens like Great Dixter and Sissinghurst. We are both keen gardeners and our daughter was still happy to spend time in a pushchair so we had a lovely relaxed time. After Standen was closed for the day we could use the gardens with no one else around, we were also really lucky with the weather. Not everyone's idea of a holiday, I got some very strange looks when I said we were going to East Grinstead for our holiday but we enjoyed it.

I don't know why people have to put others down. We all enjoy different things, and have different budgets. There are holidays I would love to take and others that don't appeal at all (potholing, anyone?). But I would never be rude enough to sneer at those who do enjoy them. It's just so small minded to rain on people's parade like that.

What I hate is the one-upmanship around the pool. It starts with someone saying they’ve never been ‘here’ before and suddenly people are chipping in with their different holiday destinations - we heard ‘this is just a cheapie for us, before we spend winter in Oz’, others boasted of safaris in Kruger Park, and World Cruises. It’s like a competition!

We took the in-laws for a long weekend in Northern France once, visiting a few places and travelling around. I couldn't believe my ears when MIL piped up very loudly over dinner one night 'I hate the French'. Lord knows where it came from, she never mentioned it before we got to France! I wanted to crawl under the table.

We went 3 times to Hull when my daughter was little. We stayed at a lovely holiday inn on the marina. There's so much to see and do, including The Deep sealife centre, the old town with the transport museum, the slavery museum and the fish trail around the town. We were luck enough to be there when a fully rigged tall ship came into the Marina, a replica of HMS Pickle that brought the news of Nelson's death, and we had a lovely chat with the crew. There are 2 indoor shopping centres, one with a river and fountains just outside, and a lovely park in the centre. They also have cream telephone boxes! I don’t know why anybody is bothered if somebody is “snooty” about a holiday choice.
As Eleanor Roosevelt said “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
Some years ago the General Synod or Lambeth Palace or some such part of the C of E organised a conference for bishops etc at Butlins at Minehead..
Our Bish at the time (Southwark) took great pleasure in informing people he was off to Butlins for his hols.

I agree with the sentiment of Eleanor Roosevelt & I admire her as a historical figure, but she was born New York Rich, neice of Teddy Roosevelt the president - easy for her to say "no one can make you feel inferior"?It's just snobbishness the same as disparaging remarks about your husband's job, your address, the kids school, your car... please yourself & mark the remarker down for it.

My friend & her DH went to India, said it was hell on earth, a filthy, rat ridden place, people going to the loo on the side of the road 😩 when she arrived home, she booked a week in lanzarote to get over the India trip 🤣

I used to go to lunch with a group of people I had worked with until I got fed up with their continual talk about their holiday destinations, each more far flung and spectacular than the previous person had spoken about. I would have preferred to have more varied topics of conversation so I stopped meeting up with them.

Yes - but they lose out as they have not the curiosity to find our for themselves what the world is like.
