Just a follow-up to my initial anxious enquiry about Ryanair. We had no problems at all with this airline, check-in was straight forward in both directions, and everything went very smoothly. There was a bit of a scramble getting our carry-on luggage into the lockers, but as we paid extra for priority boarding, we could cope with this. I noticed that women travelling alone were helped by men on the flight, and there was a general feeling of helping one another in the "scrum". OK, the plane had seen plenty of wear and tear and I was glad we only had 2 hours on board, but it was tremendous value for money.
