I thought the current fashion for suit trousers cascading around the ankle was just that - a fashion.
DS, archaeologist, Morris dancer and folklorist decided to get married in a tailor made Harris tweed suit, check shirt and hairy tie. As we lived 200 miles away, I did not see the suit until The Day. The jacket fitted perfectly, but, oh dear, the trousers - they looked as if he had been accidentally given the wrong trousers, baggy in the seat and cascading down his shoes. Not a good look around the turn of the century. He was uite happy, thankfully none of the wedding photos showed him from behind and anyway it was a lovely wedding of two people who are still in love and happy together over 20 years later.
FYI
For smarter, suit trousers, a quarter or half break provides the neatest look. The fabric over the back of your shoe should end slightly lower than it does at the front, where the break will be noticeable. Suit trousers can be specifically tailored to have this break, and are becoming the most common look for most men.
