My dear Septimia: your geography is appalling! I've lived in Preston all my life and I can definitely assure you that it's always been in the North.

My brother lives in Birmingham and THAT is the Midlands.

So where do you reckon, say, Cornwall is?

Long neglected and still looking like it's trashed by the Industrial Revolution - Preston certainly - it needs solid and long-term thinking and investment.

North is anything past Luton ! As a Londoner that was, anyway 😀😀😀

When people say ‘up North’ they generally don’t mean Scotland imho. They mean Northern England.

The North is in England, Scotland is Scotland.

Look at a map *Septimia, Manchester, Preston and Liverpool are definitely all in the north on any map dividing the country into regions. The north wouldn’t be very big if it comprised only those counties bordering Scotland. I am not biased, as I’m in Wales.

For years before the event there will be building and event infrastructure put in place, it attracts government funding, and local businesses profit from the event itself. It would also create a lasting world class sports facility, and the legacy of the investment. What’s not to like.

If somewhere in the North is lucky enough to host it, then I hope their area will benefit as much as our part of East London did from 2012 onwards.
To mention just a few:
Our hospital's A & E was enlarged, so the spacious department was a godsend to the community going forward.
We gained investment in housing, leisure, and cultural venues. Hotels, restaurants, parks etc.
My DD used the new cycle paths to travel to and from work.
My DGC, who were at local schools, enjoyed trips in the regenerated area.
(And I earned a bob or two offering accommodation for some camera crew).

Certainly no gimmicks, but functional, practical spaces created.

A very good idea. Manchester certainly gained by hosting the Commonwealth Games. They were indeed successful and brought investment into new sports facilities which are very popular. Just because something is jolly good fun, does not mean that it is frivolous or gimmicky.

Please don’t dismiss the idea out of hand.

Honestly, I felt the same about 2012, but just look at the regeneration of that area of London and the money that came whizzing in. A huge amount of living accommodation was built initially for the participants but now for everyone, and the shopping and eating area

I think it's a brilliant idea! There are already some amazing sports facilities in the North and plenty of areas which would benefit from funding.

Olympics for the North. Yes most definitely. I don't live there but both DDs do.

Our borough hosted an event in 2012.

The main road was sorted, our country park was given a makeover, local traders benefited, what’s not to like 🤷‍♀️

When they announce the Olympics they usually tidy up and gentrify the area. Least they certainly did here. They get rid of all the slummy looking houses and replace them. Therefore I would welcome it.

If you do not want it up north, we are more than happy to have it down south as the London Mayor has said.

2012 was absolutely fantastic.
