I would rather watch paint dry than have to face relentless talk about football

Or the politics threads Joseann

😃

Joseann Fri 12-Jul-24 21:23:15

I think I'll go on the gardening threads and say I have no interest in flowers or plants.
I'd probably be buried alive, rightly so.

Callistemon213 Fri 12-Jul-24 21:10:01

No need to join the threads about football.

Other threads are available.

Decision made.

Play on.

A UK fifa referee on the Internet did not agree with the penalty. I am glad England got it but it was controversial. Ian Wright said about the studs but Gary Neville who is a good pundit disagreed.

Re the penalty, the Dutch player came in with studs up on his boot, anywhere else on the pitch a free kick, inside the box, yellow card and penalty.

Should have said thanks for clarifying.

Wasn't it carefully reviewed on VAR and the penalty then awarded?

The message from King Charles to the England team made me laugh. Asking them to secure a win early in the game with no last minute wonder goals and penalties as it was not good for the nation's blood pressure.

SillyNanny321 Thu 11-Jul-24 19:08:11

Joseann glad I am not alone. They certainly did get revenge & I imagine we were not the only ones enjoying a little bit of revenge 😄

rafichagran Thu 11-Jul-24 14:46:32

Hard hat on here, but both my partner and I did not think it was a penalty, neither did the commentator or Gary Neville.
However the penalty was given, we scored and I was glad for it. England has been on the side of bad decisions in the past.
I have never complained about Gareth Southgate, he is calm, a good manager and he has taken England to the second euro final.
I will be cheering England on Sunday.

I’m no football fan - or any sports fan really, so haven’t been following it, but I have heard the news that England are through to the final, so wish them well. I hope nerves and silly mistakes don’t get the better of them, which, from what I read/hear, they are prone to.

SWT61 Thu 11-Jul-24 14:38:00

I'm a proud England fan, but I am so sick of hearing so called fans slagging our team and manager off, and particularly about last nights penalty that shouldn't have been given according to so called fans. What ever happened to loyalty? Pride in our team? Pride in our country? Which to me means through good and bad, thick and thin. I guess this is just how society is nowadays, only supportive when things are going well! Well I'm sure they're all eating their words today, and will be waiting for Sunday's final just so they can pick the sh*! Out of them again!

Charleygirl5 Thu 11-Jul-24 14:30:36

The match is shown on BBC1 and ITV on Sunday. I will be watching but many have had their fill of tennis and football.

I don't watch football but I always want to watch the last 10 minutes of the game. When it goes to penalties I get so stressed out.

My sister in law said that whenever it's down to penalties, she's a big fan, it gives her "colley wobbles". So I watched with her for support, although not a great fan due to the histrionics of some of the opposing teams.

Does anyone know why the final starts as late as 8 pm? There’ll be a lot missing work on Monday.

They want to try to catch audiences in the USA as well as in Europe. Soccer is getting bigger in the US so I suppose this is part of ‘building their brand’. My 11yo American GD is a keen soccer player and plays in a league there.

I don’t understand the rules and I’m not that interested in watching but I want England to win! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Meanwhile, there’s the Test cricket, of which I do understand the rules. grin

Foxyferret Thu 11-Jul-24 13:59:54

They were good in the first half but reverted to backwards/sideways in the second half due to the Dutch changes in midfield. I have watched all the matches and Spain are the best team in the tournament. England may have a chance but only if they play for 90 minutes as they played the first half last night. The Spanish are attack, attack, attack and it would not surprise me if they won. Keeping everything crossed for England.

JaneJudge Thu 11-Jul-24 13:16:55

they were on fire

🏁 🏎 🏎
I'm with you on that one SillyNanny321. I don't usually carry my dislike of a country's sporting personality across the different sports, but that obnoxious F1 Dutchman made me want the England football team to get revenge!

Charleygirl5 Thu 11-Jul-24 13:14:06

Ironically last week I was reading online that Gareth Southgate should be sent home mid-tournament but last night a knighthood was suggested.

I wish the commentators would shut up because I do not want to hear how he scored in 1993 or whatever. It appeared to be non-stop from them.

I hope the boys are resting and luckily it did not run to extra time. Sunday cannot come soon enough.

SillyNanny321 Thu 11-Jul-24 13:07:42

Gone off football as got bored with it! Did have to watch the last couple of matches though especially last night as against Netherlands! Anyone who also watches F1 & supports Lewis Hamilton may understand why! I have never disliked any driver but there is one who I just do not like much because of his attitude. Leave you to guess who! So glad England beat the Dutch. Was a good match!

MissAdventure Thu 11-Jul-24 12:57:10

Pitch!!
I expect everyone went out on the pith once they'd won. smile

MissAdventure Thu 11-Jul-24 12:55:34

As a non football fan, I didn't rate England that much.
I think it was the first of their games, the commentator said there was a billion pounds worth of footballers on the pith in the England team... something like that.
