About time England, cracking goal Watkins!

Urmstongran Thu 11-Jul-24 08:47:06

Tesco has revealed that it will close its stores early on Sunday to allow staff to watch the match.

It said that if England got through to the final, more than 1,800 Express stores would close at 7.30pm rather than the usual 10.30pm or 11pm.

Millie22 Thu 11-Jul-24 08:47:24

We are in the final ⚽️⚽️⚽️

It was so good to see the England team playing well and that last goal was brilliant.

Jaxjacky Thu 11-Jul-24 08:47:50

Not sure Cabbie but the whole tournament has been 5 or 8pm kick offs, I don’t think it’s the likes of Sky either which often dictate domestic start times.

Maybe it's because the Europeans are all busy noshing until their 9 pm time!! 🤔

Callistemon213 Thu 11-Jul-24 08:56:37

If the match was at 3pm it would all be over and they could all be out eating and celebrating or drowning their sorrows.

MissAdventure Thu 11-Jul-24 08:57:26

I didn't believe I would ever, ever watch football, but I have.
My next door neighbour (not "that one") looked after me a few weeks back because I was quite poorly, but she loves the football, so I said to put it on...

Now i have to watch the final.

Joseann Thu 11-Jul-24 08:57:51

😆

Callistemon213 Thu 11-Jul-24 09:02:23

At least we can watch the tennis in the afternoon.

Jaxjacky Thu 11-Jul-24 09:26:04

Good on Tesco, all Express shops will close at 7:30pm on Sunday.

DamaskRose Thu 11-Jul-24 10:25:28

I’m not a big football fan but I do follow the big events because DS does and I like to be able to converse in a semi-knowledgeable way. I would be so pleased for Gareth Southgate if England won. Come on boys, you can do it!
If Gary Neville was chocolate he’d eat himself! 😂

henetha Thu 11-Jul-24 10:36:10

Same here, DamaskRose. I'm not a big football fan, but I always like England to do well in whatever sport they play.
I'm thrilled that we are through to the final, and particularly pleased that the late goal by Ollie Watkins, who was raised not far from where I live, was the one which got us through. Yay!

rafichagran Thu 11-Jul-24 10:54:21

Well done England, I like Gareth Southgate, and I think he is very calm.
My son watches the matches in the pub, he said the atmosphere is crazy and he enjoys it better.
Onwards and upwards for Sunday.

annsixty Thu 11-Jul-24 11:01:41

My S was at the Lytham festival last week and they changed the timing of events for the match against Switzerland.
The Lightening Seeds were on so they came on Stage and sang the crowd into a frenzy with “Footballs coming home” and then showed the match.
He said watching it with 20,000 others was amazing.

Grandma70s Thu 11-Jul-24 11:06:56

It’s hard for me to get interested in football, because I don’t care who wins.

I genuinely don’t understand the fuss.

AGAA4 Thu 11-Jul-24 11:15:58

My GS is a big football fan. England winning was the icing on the cake for him as he had graduated earlier in the day.

Well done to the team and to Ollie Watkins for the last-minute goal!

Who was the pundit in the studio ranting at half-time about how the penalty should never have been allowed? Can someone give him a red card, please. He certainly shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the studio on Sunday.

That was Gary Neville. He’s his own biggest fan 😂 well someone has to be.

Gary Neville is an ex-England footballer and an excellent, knowledgeable pundit. He was giving his opinion on the England penalty, an opinion which is shared by a lot of other football experts. He was trying to be impartial and just judge the referee's decision, rather than wearing his England hat. If he had shown bias and partiality to England, people would have criticised him for that. However, I doubt he minds anyone on gransnet considering him"his own biggest fan". [GRIN]

Callistemon213 Thu 11-Jul-24 12:34:00

He did seem to be getting rather angry and shouting at the others with him.

He might disagree but that is no way for an overpaid pundit to behave.

3nanny6 Thu 11-Jul-24 12:46:27

I do not watch the football regularly as now my son is grown up he is not always at home. My son called me Sunday and we watched the match together. Last night unexpectedly my son called me about ten minutes before the second half was coming on he had just finished work and his wife told him to come to my house as he makes too much noise when watching. We sat and watched and were overjoyed at the winning goal and of course there was lots of cheering from us. He said he likes watching the football at my house and may come for the match against Spain, in my head I keep thinking Footballs coming home so come on lads make it a reality for us.

Juicylucy Thu 11-Jul-24 12:50:01

Exciting to watch England play well and what a goal, he didn’t even look up he just knew where the goal was. Got to do it all again Sunday. Not sure my nerves will cope.🇬🇧⚽️

MissAdventure Thu 11-Jul-24 12:55:34

As a non football fan, I didn't rate England that much.
I think it was the first of their games, the commentator said there was a billion pounds worth of footballers on the pith in the England team... something like that.

MissAdventure Thu 11-Jul-24 12:57:10

Pitch!!
I expect everyone went out on the pith once they'd won. smile

SillyNanny321 Thu 11-Jul-24 13:07:42

Gone off football as got bored with it! Did have to watch the last couple of matches though especially last night as against Netherlands! Anyone who also watches F1 & supports Lewis Hamilton may understand why! I have never disliked any driver but there is one who I just do not like much because of his attitude. Leave you to guess who! So glad England beat the Dutch. Was a good match!

Charleygirl5 Thu 11-Jul-24 13:14:06

Ironically last week I was reading online that Gareth Southgate should be sent home mid-tournament but last night a knighthood was suggested.

I wish the commentators would shut up because I do not want to hear how he scored in 1993 or whatever. It appeared to be non-stop from them.

I hope the boys are resting and luckily it did not run to extra time. Sunday cannot come soon enough.

Joseann Thu 11-Jul-24 13:14:11

🏁 🏎 🏎
I'm with you on that one SillyNanny321. I don't usually carry my dislike of a country's sporting personality across the different sports, but that obnoxious F1 Dutchman made me want the England football team to get revenge!
