Exactly Riverwalk. It also means that once you start something and get replies you can’t stop it - the answer always being the one MissAdventure was given.

I think there are a few assumptions there, Blencathra, unless you definitively know that’s the case. I am very wary in all threads, chat or not.

The answer is simple - if Gransnet want a useful and helpful Forum, where people feel free to post personal experiences, they need to keep it exclusive to Gransnet. They have plenty of articles they can share. If they don’t the forum ceases to be useful when people stick to the bland.
In actual fact what happens is that this will all disappear and new posters will be very candid because they have no idea that their problem is shared.

In all my years on Twitter the general chat threads have never been linked ( to my knowledge) However best to be careful on all- just in case.
Mumsnet are the same. They share. I once started a thread on Mumsnet that I wanted removed - I got the ‘won’t because useful replies’ answer.

Yes, I understand that Blencathra. So are you saying that GNHQ has a two tier rule system which ‘protects’ certain threads from further exposure?

It's not so much a two tier system. More a case of, what will grab FB and Twitter's attention. Soop's kitchen is lovely but too bland to be shared elsewhere.

No. They are advertising - the purpose of using other social media is to get more people on the Gransnet site. They choose only a few threads each day- ones they think will be sufficiently interesting for people to come over and join in.
The problem being that people can read them, share and comment without doing it on Gransnet. Grandmother age people just having a general chit chat about nothing in particular is not something they think will get more traffic on the site. I never go on Soop’s kitchen - apart from once to see what it was- it is obvious that there are people on there who know each other and have a back history- even if only online.

I found out about GN through twitter, I read the threads over several months before I joined.

GNHQ could it not be possible to have a "safe" place so that posters with nowhere/no one to turn to could post secure in the knowledge that it will not be used elsewhere.

For some gransnetters this foru is their only form of contact with the outside world, it would be such a shame if they felt unable to reach out in their times of need!!!

I have just - for the first time- found and read the Gransnet privacy policy. I can’t see anywhere that gives me privacy choices.
On Twitter I have my name, photograph and interests, but yet have far more control. If I wanted I could protect my tweets so that only followers could read them and I could vet those followers.

The Twitter thread has now been deleted by gransnet.

It was posted on Twitter though, albeit in error.
Again, my fault, but it won't be happening again.

I think that Gransnetters realise that their posts can be seen by anyone, but they are not aware that they can be discussed elsewhere with people sharing and commenting in places where OP never sees the replies.
I think that if you ran a poll asking Gransnetters if they were on social media that many would say that they don’t touch it- not realising that Gransnet is social media where Gransnet hold all the controls and the poster has none, except to keep their posts very bland.
Perhaps at the very least the starter of the thread should be asked if they mind being linked elsewhere - or have a clear warning before starting a thread of - this may be shared on Twitter or Facebook. Or they could email the OP and tell them that they have 67 replies on Facebook.

why can GN not have 30 day or 90 day thread the same as MN where posts are removed after that time'?
Had MissAdventure posted on a 30 day thread she would know that even though HQ had refused to remove the thread after 30 days it would to quote MNHQ go pouf and be no more.
