It was a French person who taught me that rule when I was at university in my thirties. She was one of my tutors.

Only one other person in the room was aware that rule existed, and she was, if I remember correctly, the oldest mature student in the room, some ten years older than I was. That might be an indication of how the teaching of grammar plummeted between her secondary education in the '60s and the rest of us.

In my case, it was a question of once learned, never forgotten, but in all honesty I don't recall either seeing or hearing it used more than a dozen times in the thirty years that have passed since then, and when speaking to others, I sometimes deliberately use the 'incorrect' version so as not to draw attention to myself.

When someone actually types 'when I lose my keys..'. instead of 'when I loose my keys' as if they were kept in a pen and then given their freedom, rather than just being mislaid.

When someone says, "It was given to my husband and me."

The late Queen used to speak of "My husband and I" as the subject of a sentence. Perhaps people thought that that was invariably correct.

(Also, please will even respected journalists say "on the part of" not "on behalf of". Quite different meanings.)

When people say bored with or bored by instead of bored of althoughI believe the latter is grammatically acceptable now.

I noticed that my 40 year old son twice wrote ‘’accomodation’ and I was a bit concerned about correcting him. However, he wrote back ‘acommodation - got it,’. Cheeky 😬
