Renting or Letting?

Just watching Homes Under the Hammer. Something that bugs me is the constant reference to 'renting' when surely if you are making money out of your property by allowing somebody to live in it you are 'letting?'

Whenever a developer states they are going to 'rent' the property they have just renovated I feel like shouting, 'No you're not. You OWN it.'

Do these people not take any notice of the words TO LET on the Estate Agent's board?

The presenters are just as bad.

Yes, it should either be 'I'm going to rent out the property' or 'I'm going to let the property.'

Haven't they heard of Buy to Let mortgages etc.?

Impressed by your mind merlot yes, you are right, it's letting, but my lazy mind doesn't protest when hearing renting.grin

You're quite right that it should be "let" or "rent out". In, as it were, the other direction, we have a pop-up shop in the town, and in the window it says "Let this shop for free!" which sets my teeth on edge for not just the wrong use of "let" but also for the awful "for free"!!

I have always said that the owner of the property let's it, and the person who occupies it rents it. I hope that makes sense!
