I was 7 and still remember this.

I shed a tear watching it on the BBC news this morning.

RIP flowers Even after all these years.

This was my first real childhood memory.
It was the first day of half term & I was 5, I went to my friend’s house & saw the footage on her television. Both her parents were in tears.I will never forget it.

Our HT came in to tell us about it, as his friend was a HT in a neighbouring Welsh school. My friend remembers our school secretary bursting into the classroom in tears. Our school was quite close to the slag heaps in our pit village and I can remember looking up at the high windows in the classroom and wondering if the same thing might happen to us.

I was in the first week of a new job having just returned from honeymoon. I heard it on the lunchtime radio news, went on shift, and broke the news to my new colleagues. We were all very shocked and saddened. 😢
