Sir Ranulph Fiennes

I heard yesterday and upset me to read that Sir Ranulph Fiennes who is classed as the greatest living explorer is being kept in a care home "unlawfully deprived of his liberty", being forced to wear sunglasses and a hat in case someone recognises him. Kept in a care home illegally under a false name. I know he is suffering from Parkinson's disease.

I had the pleasure of attending one of his lectures a few years ago and was able to speak to him, he was such a humble and gracious man and I shall always remember our conversation.

His wife is in charge of his care and she is saying her husband is ex-SAS whose life might be in danger from extremists.

But his family and friends very upset over the circumstances and want to take the matter further, basically blaming his wife.

I just truly hope she is trying to protect her husband but articles are not really suggesting that and that his wife is accountable for the present problem.

Has anyone else read any more on this or further news?

The DoLs assessment explicitly considers social interaction and contact with others Oreo.

And you know for a fact that assessment has taken place? The problem for dementia residents, as I know all too well is that they will often say anything, many things are far from the truth.

The brightest people I know discuss trivia at times. Those who are not so bright possibly cant understand that.

These posts, however, don't refer to trivia. They refer to malicious gossip. But perhaps you support that and feel it shows the gossips to be a group of the brightest people?

Was Eleanor Roosevelt an authority on minds?

Eleanor Roosevelt: "Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people."

The friend of the family has quite an astounding backstory. He did a similar campaign exposing the alleged crimes of a mountaineer, he also seems to have been involved in exposing nazi war criminals. I have been down a complete rabbit hole reading about it.

His healthcare and room may well be fine and his physical needs met, that’s all Police will care about.
The fact that none of his other family or any old friends are allowed to visit him won’t be taken into consideration as his wife is paying the bills.
The bottom line is that care homes want to be paid.

Not the case Oreo- the Police have clear statutory safeguarding responsibilities to protect children and vulnerable adults- under section 42 Care Act 2014.

The police also act as statutory partner on Local Safeguarding boards and have a legal duty to share information and participate in enquiries about adults with care and support needs who are at risk of abuse of neglect.

The step son has made clear damaging allegations against his mother, e.g that she is illegally denying her husband his liberties, he mentioned DoLs specifically- in the national press and Cheshire Police have contacted the step son to discuss his concerns. CP must now share such concern information with all local statutory safeguarding partners and investigate accordingly.

Cheshire Police must now exercise their statutory responsibilities, investigate all concerns and share information with their local statutory safeguarding partners. Not "slap dash" at all as the step son quotes in his exclusive interview with the Guardian today.

Who pays the bill in the care home is irrelevant to safeguarding responsibilities and investigations. Also regardless of care homes evidently seeking to get bills paid- they are legally obliged to maintain adequate safeguarding processes, escalate any safeguarding concerns in order to register and have its licence to operate as a care home with the health regulator. Without this licence they would be illegally operating and closed down by the Local Authority.

The police evidently checked the care home's licence and regulations as is stated Ranulph is being cared for in an appropriate facility with appropriate oversight ( ie the health regulator) It would be in breach of its statutory safeguarding responsibilities if the police had not checked such matters.

It isn't from what I have seen the stepsons comments on social media it is the friend of the family.

I referred to step son's own comments Galaxy, not what social media is saying.

Seems like you haven't seen the step son's comments today? He did an exclusive interview with the Guardian....

There you go Casdon. The step son can claim whatever he chooses to claim in the media. His comments have certainly has stirred up huge speculation. If step son is right that means every body, including the Police, care facility, CQC, LA and every care staff member currently involved in Ranulph's care, including GP, have failed in their statutory safeguarding duties.

LPoA grants his wife legal decision making authority over health and financial affairs. However the wife with LPoA has no lead right to arbitrarily or unreasonably ban family or friend visitors unless it is proven to be in Ranulph's best interests or necessary for safeguarding.

Registered care facilities, registered health and social are practitioners and LAs are aware of this and must surely, be aware of media focus on Ranulph and statements made by step son et al? They must consider Ranulph's best interests and escalate statutory safeguarding process if they have any safeguarding concerns including about the wife- just as the care home in Wales did (though in that circumstance it was the home found to have failed to have the right protocols in place and the wife was right to give instructions, ie of the standard of daily care she wanted for her husband).

Casdon Wed 30-Sept-26 15:08:16

A fresh DoLs is required every time somebody moves care settings though, so even if there was not one in place originally there should be for subsequent placements, and now if he is restrained in any way.

LemonJam Wed 30-Sept-26 14:51:56

apologies for typos....

LemonJam Wed 30-Sept-26 14:49:55

Are you talking about the care home in Wales 2 years ago eazybee.

The wife gave instructions to the care home relating to Ralph's day to day activities of daily living. When care home manager raised concerns about these instructions so contacted the health regulator. When the regulator, Care Inspecortate Wales. looked into the matter it confirmed in writing that in fact the home did not have the correct protocols in place for these daily activities. Ranulph moved from that care facility to another....hardly surprising in those circumstances.

The step son is today stating the Cheshire Police have contacted him and he has raised his concerns with the police so this gives him hope- but at the same time states that the Police statement was "slapdash" and "really disappointing" 🤷‍♀️ He states there was no DoLS in place 2 years ago thus Ranulph is being deprived of his liberties. That would be a safeguarding concern.

I am beginning to think the step son is not less concerned about Ranulph's welfare, ie CP has confirmed that he is being cared for in an appropriate facility, with appropriate oversight and there are no safeguarding concerns. But more concerned about getting his own way, seeking media spot light, undermining his estranged mother and now complaining about Cheshire Police.

If Ranulph has capacity he is able to make decisions for himself. If he lacks capacity his wife and PoA may well ahem also applied for DoLs over the past 2 years. If a DoLs is in place- care staff MUST deliver care his best interests. All residents in a care setting have a holistic assessment including psychological and emotional car needs and aspects such as visiting.

Poor man .
How horrible.
A lady from my church suddenly couldn't cope and has been put in a home totally against her wishes.

eazybee Wed 30-Sept-26 08:14:58

Family and friends do not have rights and it is difficult to overcome a Power of Attorney. They do however appear to have legitimate concerns, some of which were raised officially by a manager (I believe) in one of the many care homes Ranulph Fiennes passed through, who was familiar with the circumstances, particularly that of medication and registration with a local Doctor. As I posted earlier people do attempt to limit contact with friends and relations and it arouses suspicions.

DaisyAnneReturns Wed 30-Sept-26 06:46:33

Totally agree with LemonJam Tue 29-Sept-26 23:09:25. Most of thus thread is the reporting ov malicious gossip.

DaisyAnneReturns Wed 30-Sept-26 06:43:52

Family and friends have no automatic rights unless they have been legally passed to them. Why do people think they have?

LemonJam Tue 29-Sept-26 23:09:25

Those making safeguarding allegations eg step son et al are not qualified social workers and neither are they in possession of current facts about Ranulph’s current confidential care matters. The police are in possession of such facts following their investigation so were in a position to make a public statement.

Impossible for the police to investigate safeguarding concerns about an individual and without finding out the facts. Impossible to find out the facts without consulting those involved with statutory safeguarding and statutory care responsibilities involved in Ranulph’s current care. The clues are in the words “investigation”, “facts” , “statutory” and the statement “appropriate” care facility ( all appropriate care facilities statutorily must have a designated safeguarding lead to ensure the organisation adheres to its statutory safeguarding responsibilities).

The police public statement provided the facts that there are no safeguarding concerns 😊

Casdon Tue 29-Sept-26 20:49:22

Social Services are the lead agency for safeguarding, and work in collaboration with the police routinely in safeguarding vulnerable adults, so it’s highly likely that they were involved - the police would not issue a statement otherwise.

JenniRen Tue 29-Sept-26 20:43:21

There police provided an update however that he is well and no safeguarding issues in an appropriate care facility.
🤔 Were the police accompanied by a social worker qualified in adult social care and safeguarding?

LemonJam Tue 29-Sept-26 20:27:33

In normal circumstances a spouse would respect their husband or wives wishes. In normal circumstances a spouse may well keep others up to date with information even if their spouse no longer wishes anyone to visit - that is family and friends they are in contact with.

There has been estrangement and ill will sadly in this family however.

There police provided an update however that he is well and no safeguarding issues in an appropriate care facility. The issue is not the update which is news for them and reassuring. Their wish is to visit and the step sons also has publicly stated he wishes to strip his estranged mother of PoA rights. Thats fighting talk and he’s seeking crowd funding for litigation.

Messy and between the parties at the end of the day and Ranulph is entitled to privacy, dignity and confidentiality meanwhile. Public speculation not likely to stop however I guess.

JenniRen Tue 29-Sept-26 20:06:15

Most people are friends with others before they meet someone and marry so of course it's likely that Sir Ranulph, who was 61 when he remarried, would have longstanding friends. Under normal circumstances, a spouse would keep old friends and family up-to-date if their husband or wife became ill or no longer wished to see anyone.
However, if this is not the case, then it is not surprising they are all concerned about his welfare.

As no statement has been forthcoming, then speculation and rumours will continue about the welfare of an elderly and frail person.

LemonJam Tue 29-Sept-26 18:26:44

Crikey- helicopters at dawn reportedly alleged! 😅.

Sir Ranulph met and married his wife and they have an adult child together- who has not gone public with her views. The step son has admitted he is also estranged from his step sister.

Most people meet other people before getting married so technically have known them longer. Not sure what that has to do with the price of eggs though in this situation 🤷‍♀️
