Just saw a bit of his speech and sounds like he is going to make some big changes.

I still don’t get how he was only elected to Parliament a month ago but is going to become Prime Minister next week!

Quite easy to understand. KS resigned , AB stood for leadership, no one else did. Labour largest party so leader becomes PM. QED.

Quite easy. AB decided he wanted to be PM, established a route to do that via various others willingly stepping down or being coerced into doing so and there you are!

He wasn’t that keen on the PM swapping without a GE when it was Tories, but that’s politicians for you.

Are we going to talk about his speech or rehash recent arguments?

I think he's made himself a real hostage to fortune.

ronib Fri 17-Jul-26 16:59:49

Another psychodrama and who cares?

Casdon Fri 17-Jul-26 17:03:30

It’s a knocking thread,😑🍋 only please, it’s World emoji day.

Maremia Fri 17-Jul-26 17:10:19

Oh yes, so he is.

Galaxy Fri 17-Jul-26 17:32:45

But he didn't actually say anything. Other than moving power from Westminster, it was just pretty words. Was that it? There has to be more than good oration.

LemonJam Fri 17-Jul-26 17:35:49

As Tuliptree outlined the explanation is pretty straight forward. Starmer stood down the Monday after the Makerfield by election. AB put himself forward for leadership.

The leadership contest timetable has seemed short because it ended at first round. It ended at that stage because AB received the backing of 349 MPs ( out of a total of 411) in the first round. going by the numbers - ie other contender MPs between them only managed to secure the backing of 62 MPs between them.

AB therefore won at first stage as a result of overwhelming, unbeatable majority MP backing.

Sometimes, especially a new Labour Leader to the group of labour MP's, a little bit of oration goes a long way. Establish some trust & get the good news out there.
After all Kier was unpopular because he didn't change anything - but he made lots of beneficial changes. He just didn't do an oration about them. So in politics, don't knock it.
What about Churchill's speeches? Hot air? or real pull-together motivation?
Sounds to me as though he'll be to the left of Kier. More a Kinnochite than a Blairite.

Galaxy Fri 17-Jul-26 17:51:22

I am not sure people understand where a significant part of the electorate are at. The lack of trust is partly based on the slogans of recent times. We are many years from Churchill.
The dancing reminded me of kinnock though. .

Maybe AB's ability to communicate with the public will be seen as a good thing rather than a bad thing albeit evidently anyone who does not support the LP and is anti AB is likely to remain a detractor.

One of the criticisms of Starmer was that he did not engage and communicate well with the electorate. AB undoubtably will be better.

Anyone who expects electorate trust to improve overnight and before AB is even PM is living in cloud cuckoo land- it takes time. Parliament is very soon going into summer recess anyway. Thus it will be autumn when AB's plans start to take shape and be communicated.

We've just signed the biggest ever trade deal with India I believe. Soon after another one with [I think] Switzerland. But none of that ever made headline news. Keir didn't agree with brexit but respected the vote and has spent the last two years rebuilding our relationship with Europe and negotiating new trade deals along with dealing with Trump...not bad for two years in office. Imo. Oh and the number of people coming here on boats has dropped dramatically, too...

foxie48 Fri 17-Jul-26 19:21:47

I care about our country and the people who live here so I want any government of any stripe to do a good job which benefits us all. I'd also like to see parties coming together for the common good and if AB manages to that better than it's been in the last few decades, he'll make me happy. the problems we have as a society can't be fixed with short term measure so we need a degree of altruism. Impossible? Probably but I'll give anyone a chance if they are prepared to give it a go and that's what I got from his speech today.

My Granny used to say, ‘Never trust a man without ear lobes!’
🤔

Blinko Fri 17-Jul-26 19:32:01

I heard he has a plan to revolutionise social care....I do hope he gets to implement something, rather than allow all these private companies to run away with huge profits.

LizzieDrip Fri 17-Jul-26 19:53:15

Well, the PLP gave KS 2 years to turn the country round so, in the spirit of fairness, AB has until July 2028 to do the same.

Presumably, by then we’ll all be bathing in £50 notes!

MayBee70 Fri 17-Jul-26 19:54:41

Just had an email asking me to join the Labour Party. Nice to know that they don't even realise I'm already a member sad

eazybee Fri 17-Jul-26 20:06:00

Andrew Burnham is a demagogue.

Primrose53 Fri 17-Jul-26 20:18:29

We’ve just sent £153 million of foreign aid to Pakistan.
£153 million! We shouldn’t be sending them anything until they agree to take back the disgusting grooming gang man who has just been released from prison. We are such a soft touch.

Iam64 Fri 17-Jul-26 20:34:59

Keir Starmer has made some good choices at home and internationally. A man of integrity but for reasons I can’t begin to understand, many people didn’t not just dislike him, you’d hear the word hate.

I’m a Gtr Manchester person, a Labour Party member. I supported Keir and very reluctantly for numerous reasons agreed he should stand down. I’ve met Andy Burnham, seen him speak and as a Gtr Manchester person have seen the positive impact he’s had here. Not perfect but I don’t expect perfection.

LizzieDrip Fri 17-Jul-26 20:41:18

Unfortunately Iam64 it appears the PLP does expect perfection!

Ah yes, somebody else has trotted this out. Must be doing the rounds somewhere.
