But the Guardian is jumping the gun a bit - Burnham's prospective appointment isn't a Done Deal just yet!

However, I personally don't care too much who gets the job providing they banish the despicable Rachel Reeves to the back benches.

That'll do me!

It's interesting that with some 400 Labour MPs they have to choose someone from outside the Commons as leader and PM. Where is the talent of yesteryear?

In older people's imaginations, I think. Where it always seems to be.

I don't think the 'talent' was necessarily lauded when they were in office...

Geordiegirl1 Wed 24-Jun-26 13:56:57

Yes to Ed Millibae but not Streeting!

Cossy Wed 24-Jun-26 13:57:11

I have no idea. I’m happy to wait and see who becomes PM, then wait and see who they bring in and swap out of the cabinet.

It’s all getting a little weary and I never thought I’d say that!

He hasn't won yet. There might be a surprise entrant to the race yet. If he sacks Rachel I'll be happy.

Me too. At PMQ's this morning, Reeves looked like a turkey who has just turned over the calendar and found December.

I hope Angela Rayner isn't invited back although it's probably inevitable. I'd like to see John Healey persuaded back into the defence role. I'd also like to see Milliband moved somewhere as imo he's causing damage to people and our way of life, too much of a fanatic. Darren Jones seems a very safe pair of hands and has a great deal of experience in the treasury so maybe the chancellor role. Don't think Cooper has been much use in the foreign office but what do I know! I'd make Streeting return to Health as from what I see locally he's only made things much worse but Milliband might fit there.
I'm going to be puzzling over this all day now!!

TheHappyGardener Wed 24-Jun-26 14:12:30

I would like to see Ed Milliband gone from the cabinet completely and taking his ridiculous and impractical ideologies with him!!

LemonJam Wed 24-Jun-26 14:18:03

We do not know for sure he will be PM- yet to see if other contenders come forward. Other contenders will be exploring levels of support etc

Streeting has ruled himself out. IF AB becomes PM I think it would be a mistake to choose cabinet colleagues on the basis of loyalty/support/endorsement- e.g Streeting as chancellor because he did not stand against him. Streeting and AB differ on spending rhetoric so that may backfire. To 'reward' yet sideline a rival like Streeting there is the Foreign Office. That is a role that would have suited Starmer- but I now doubt he would want it.

AB has come in on a platform seeking change so he needs to have a cabinet that differs from Starmer's and is structured to deliver the 'change's seeks- yet to be outlined and honed. Much work going on behind the scenes no doubt.

Yvette Cooper is hugely experienced, knows AB from when they were in government together years ago and she's a steady pair of hands. Ed Miliband will be there somewhere and most likely Nandy also and Louse Haigh. Mahmood has been hard line as home secretary which doesn't seem like a fit with AB's values but she is able? Angela Raynor most likely to feature- she may come forward as a contender still? Miatta Fahnbulleh has an economic and think tank background which could be very useful so a very outside bet as chancellor.

Other possibles? - John Healy, Bridget Phillipson remain in Education? David Lammy was a big Starmer defender- can he make the transition? I'm not sure where RR would fit- not anywhere prominent for sure.

LemonJam Wed 24-Jun-26 14:24:35

I do think the LP has a better pool of talent than the far diminished pool of Conservative MPs in opposition. Reform UK as the previously perceived successor parry ( AB has turned around that perception at least ) has nowhere near enough talent to form a government.

So although the new PM will experience many knocks and a hard time- its new cabinet I feel will be better placed than the other parties to deal with the enormous challenges any government would face right now.

I look forwards to the smoking ruins...

Smoking ruins of what?

The Independent are convinced it will be Miliband. They also said he will negotiate with Burnham re North sea drilling. As Burnham apparently wants that but Miliband promotes green issues.

glammagran Wed 24-Jun-26 14:42:24

karmalady

Miliband
Raynor
Cooper

oh what talent!!

Not forgetting Louise Haigh and how about Tulip Saddique?

Lying seems to be a requisite to get a place in a Labour Cabinet.

LauraNorderr Wed 24-Jun-26 14:51:46

I hope he brings back John Healey. I hope he doesn’t bring in Angela Raynor but suspect that he will. I quite like Lisa Nandy and I respect Jess Philips stand when she truly believes in something.
I hope most of all that the zealot Ed Miliband is sent to Siberia. Of course climate change needs to be addressed but not by a man with very little understanding of the science.
For example his backing for the dangerous, eye wateringly expensive and totally unnecessary Peak Cluster carbon capture pipeline which will carve up great swathes of countryside from Derbyshire to Wirral to bury carbon, created by outdated methods of cement production, beneath the seabed in Moecombe Bay where earth tremors are fairly common.

LauraNorderr Wed 24-Jun-26 14:55:00

Sorry CO2 beneath the seabed

Starmer surrounded himself with his supporters without considering their competence for their positions. Hopefully, Burnham will have a better attitude.
Presumably he will have discussed all this before he agreed to stand in the by-election.

Yes. I've often wondered why Sir Keir went to the trouble of levering his friend and ex colleague Hermer into the House of Lords so he could make him Attorney General. Will Lord Hermer have to go too? From what I read, his main area of interest was getting this Chagos Islands return done, and I wonder how Burnham feels about that.

Tuliptree Wed 24-Jun-26 15:10:04

Generally of course PMs fill their Cabinets with their opponents

Ukelady1 Wed 24-Jun-26 16:54:00

Not much to choose from.

Wyllow3 Wed 24-Jun-26 18:22:53

Louise Haigh will be back, in Transport. She was doing a good job and a good grasp of the overall issues as well as regards fighting for trains, decent stock and network issues for all of us in the North of England.

Milliband will stay. For goodness sake, does no one care about the climate anymore? He's not perfect but he's your genuine conviction caring on his issues.

Why should Cooper go if Burnham comes? She's a lot of experience an a sensible if not dramatic approach.

Reeves has to go, but I am not up on that side of things.

I dont want Raynham - but am willing to hear "why she would be good" beyond expediency.

Padstow 13, I agree with you. Rachel from accounts has to go

Casdon Wed 24-Jun-26 21:21:30

I don’t think Burnham and Cooper have ever been besties Wyllow3, I remember a lot of clashes between them in the past. I also think she’s been loyal to Starmer, and she’s principled, so may not want to work under Burnham. I hope I’m wrong though.

Wyllow3 Wed 24-Jun-26 21:38:38

Yes Casdon. She's a "steady as she goes" person.

JPB123 Wed 24-Jun-26 21:47:36

Ed Miliband should go….Siberia ,a good idea. There are a lot to choose from.Rachel Reeves…who?

Wyllow3 Wed 24-Jun-26 22:01:32

Why don't you like Ed Miliband?

MawsRosie Wed 24-Jun-26 22:42:02

Who?.

Doodledog Wed 24-Jun-26 22:51:57

It’s RaynEr, not RaynOr or Raynham.
