In a Dilemma

My grandson's 3rd birthday is coming up on September 18th and I am in a dilemma as to what I should do. My married son and myself do not get along esp. after he got married 5years ago.. His wife is now expecting their 2nd child in October. Both he and his wife have not been talking to me as they have accused me of telling my sister that my Dil is pregnant when my sister saw her at a function. I understand my son did not want me to let anyone know but I was caught off-guard and told me sister. However, that same day I told my son about it and did say that I was sorry. However, he got very angry and accused me of gossiping with my sister. I was so upset for a few days and stayed in my room. I usually play with my grandson in the evening but I was too depressed to come out of my room. They then decided to keep him away from me. I texted my son a few days later saying that I miss my grandson and if I could play with me. My son texted me back with a very angry response that his son was not a toy. He also said that I was not a good mother and how can i be a good grandmother. He also said he will not forgive me ever for ignoring his son. I decided to not response back. My dilemma is that my grandson's birthday is coming up and I am not sure what I should do. Either way i know he is going to be very rude but I am trying to think what is the best way to handle his birthday. My son and dil are generally very unforgiving people and I am always the one apologizing first and usually it is always my fault. We have not spoken since May and I have not seen my grandson although they live in my house. Any thoughts?

May I ask why they live in your house?

The way I see your post is that your telling your sister is what broke the camel's back, it may seem small but it is not in your son and dil's eyes.
The reaction your son has now comes from issues ingrained in the past

"He also said that I was not a good mother and how can i be a good grandmother" - this is key

The birthday is the least of your problems - it is like worrying about the curtains when your house is on fire.

I would address the root of the issues with your son instead of concentrating on your grandson.

Gurms you have had issues with your family since you posted in 2023 and were advised then and subsequently to get some help. Did you do so?
I do hope they are now at least paying you rent, but it sounds like they still have no respect for you, isn’t it time they got their own place?

Oopsadaisy1 Tue 25-Aug-26 14:20:41

I think 2 months notice, so that they can find somewhere else to live might be the answer to this one.
How dare they make you stay in your room because you feel so uncomfortable in your own home?
If the house is too big for you, get some Estate Agents around and put it on the market.
Entitled or what!

Hithere Tue 25-Aug-26 14:22:19

In your background, they have been living with you for 5 years and always reporting issues with you.

JenniRen Tue 25-Aug-26 14:33:25

They live in your house, don't pay rent, use their child as a blackmailing tool and make you so upset that you are confined in your room in your house?

This sounds like elder abuse.

I do what Oopsadaisy1 suggests.

Why should she move out of her own house though ! .
If you give them notice you will never see your grandson again that’s for certain.
I do think you need to stand up for yourself and maybe get your sister on your side and tell them they are being unreasonable and treating you poorly
Do they pay rent ?

* We have not spoken since May and I have not seen my grandson although they live in my house. Any thoughts?

It's time for them to move out to a place of their own.

They have lived with me since they got married. I am a widow and my son feels that this house belongs to him as well although they do not contribute any bills or maintenance. I do understand that the current issue is not the actual issues but son is generally very difficult to talk to and he gets very angry if i want to discuss with him and generally he blames me for every wrong. I think the reason why we have problems is that he and his wife do not accept accountability for their own actions

Gurms Tue 25-Aug-26 15:21:15

It is true that I have been having ongoing issues with both my son and dil. I have approached them many times but they just ignore what i say. They do feel entitled and I am actually scared of them.

Sago Tue 25-Aug-26 15:23:28

I think your grandsons birthday is the least of your problems.

Get some legal advice, Age Concern maybe able to help you.

The house is your house not your sons.

You are the victim of two manipulative bullies.

eazybee Tue 25-Aug-26 15:24:23

You have been through all this before, sought advice and done nothing.
Is there any point in giving you advice?

Smileless2012 Tue 25-Aug-26 15:26:26

You need to get them out Gurms preferably before the baby is born so get legal advice and get the ball rolling. If you're scared, this is definitely elder abuse so please get help now.

JenniRen Tue 25-Aug-26 16:13:46

Unless your son owns half of the house then no, it is not his, it is yours.

You do need advice, as Sago says, contact Age UK as a first step.

"Why should she move out of her own house though !"

Oopsadaisy suggested giving them notice and then putting the house on the market only if Gurms finds it too large for her.
Easier said than done, of course, but perhaps getting advice from Age UK will be a first step.
Sadly, they will probably continue to use access to grandchildren as a blackmailing tool.

They really are taking the proverbial.

You really DO need to get legal advice and end this situation. I understand that you are scared of them. Speak to:

*a solicitor re miving out and then evicting them
*Domestic Abuse Helpline 0808 2000 247 or utilise their Live Chat online re Coercioin/enotional abuse/ your fear of them etc - they will advise re shelter shilst evicting or other actions

PLEASE do something - I know its hard when one feels like a rabbit in the headlights ...

MollyNew Tue 25-Aug-26 17:47:54

If you are scared of them, get some help and have them evicted from your property.

Shelflife Tue 25-Aug-26 17:51:20

They live in YOUR house but dont contribute in any way financially!!!!!
Your son is not entitled to anything, simple solution - tell them to leave. You haven't spoken to them or seen uour GS since May. What on earth is going on !?
This is your house not his. Your son and DIL are taking advantage, time they grew up. Get legal advice and get them out if your property ASAP.

MollyNew Tue 25-Aug-26 18:08:31

Your local Adult Social Services might be able to help as this sounds like a Safeguarding issue.

Shelflife Tue 25-Aug-26 19:36:10

You are scared of them ! Get help immediately. MollyNew is correct please ring adult social services tomorrow . You should not be scared of your son and DIL. Tell social services exactly what is happening and do not pull any punches!! This has to stop. They are abusing you.Your son needs some home truths and acknowledge the house us not his - how dare he bully you like this. Your GS " s 3rd birthday is the least of your problems ! Take action now , ring the police if they become violent. You must stand up for yourself . Keep posting on your progress- good luck!

lovethepuppies Tue 25-Aug-26 21:56:52

Just echoing the others - please seek advice and support from a service or person who can help you. It's not his house and it sounds like it's time they got their own home. This is indeed elder abuse.

Allsorts Tue 25-Aug-26 22:34:01

This is elderly abuse. You and your sister report him. Make him move out and change your will. If you don't he will be be getting you out. It's hard to face but they don't care and
why would you think you could be part of their lives after five years being treating like some thing on their shoe.by a couple of scroungers. I!would sell up and get a retirement place and start going on holidays and living, not scuttling to your room. I just wish I could sort him out. ,I would not want him or his wife, family or not, awful bullies. It's not his house it's yours, make him get off his butt and get out.

JenniRen Tue 25-Aug-26 22:43:27

"I am a widow"

What would your husband have said? Would your son have behaved like this if his father was still alive?
How dare they treat you like this.

Please don't carry on like this, it is not normal and no way to live. Let us know how you get on.
