Good luck to the AfD and Reform.
Common sense is finally emerging. The welfarism cannot (and should not) be sustained.

And David, thanks for that link.
Reassuring.

I can assure posters that DAR and I did not collude on our strikingly similar responses grin

It made me smile - in a very good way.

Thanks DAR for explaining the Overton window.
There are so many excellent 'explaining' posts on this Thread.
Wish I could preserve them for reference.

I’d like to second that👏👏👏

Thanks DAR … well informed, measured & thoughtful, as alwayssmile

Well at least my thread has been good for ‘something’!

Evidence? Stats? Where do you get you information from? "something you heard".

Just making claims wont hack it on this thread where people, having read the whole thread, having been giving thought out references before making claims.

Look at the AI overview of this question of vanishing failed asylum applicants and the GOV.UK site.
Tens of thousands do go missing as they go to mainly the North West or London and mingle with their own countrymen in the black economy. Some will be found periodically on raids by immigration officers on businesses but most will be here forever.

Thank you Oreo, I did get the stats from AI.

I didn't realise that, although the information it out there for anyone to access, that I had to include a link in my post. I shall have to look at the rule book again

Is this a University forum or a court of law? I thought it was just a discussion group. Silly me.

I'm trying to understand your position. If participants aren't allowed to question, test, or challenge claims they disagree with, what role do you see discussion serving beyond expressing agreement?

sundowngirl Tue 16-Jun-26 14:47:39

Perhaps it is the fact that some comments from posters are coming across as unnecessarily nasty.

i.e. Willow£ - What is the point of having a series of apparently ignorant counter assertions going round in circles with no facts or reputable opinion articles?

Maremia Tue 16-Jun-26 14:50:43

I think the use of 'apparently' makes the question acceptable.

Witzend Tue 16-Jun-26 15:05:35

For understanding what led up to Hitler, I can really recommend ‘A Berlin Diary’ by Lionel Shriver, an American journalist, who was in Berlin the few years prior to WW2, and IIRC until the Americans entered the war.

Eminently readable, not heavy going. I think it was first published during WW2.

Really?????

Maremia Tue 16-Jun-26 16:36:24

I wonder if it is still in print?

Maremia Tue 16-Jun-26 16:36:42

One way to find out.

Maremia Tue 16-Jun-26 16:38:40

Yes, and it has it's own Wiki page.

CatsWhiskas Tue 16-Jun-26 16:41:05

BTW it's William Shirer.

Maremia Tue 16-Jun-26 16:43:12

Thanks CatsWhiskas.
I must make a correction. Not in print, but second hand copies available. Sorry for any misinfo.

Yes, that was autocorrect, and I hadn’t checked!

He wrote a much longer book after WW2, when he was given access to literally tonnes of papers the Nazis hadn’t had time to destroy. I don’t usually go for that kind of reading, but I found it unputdownable. ‘The Rise and Fall of The Third Reich’.

Lionel Shriver an American novelist. She is perhaps best known for We Need To Talk About Kevin.

She is only in her late 50’s

It’s William Shriver Witzend oops! 🙂

Well, yes. Lionel Shriver is rather right wing I understand. She might well approve of Hitler's methods.

On the news this evening, Russia is seen as the UK's greatest military threat yet British people are supportive of political parties both in the UK and in Europe who are funded by Russian money, want closer links with Russia and want to see sanctions on Russia removed and whose leaders are in the pocket of Putin. How on earth do they "square" this with reclaiming Britain for the British and marching along waving the flag of St George when they are selling the UK down the river. Shame on them!

Whitewavemark2 Tue 16-Jun-26 18:37:09

If the threat becomes greater from Russia, and it is generally expected to get much worse, where does that leave those who have connections with Russia and their supporters.

Would they be viewed as 5 th columnists ?

Maremia Tue 16-Jun-26 18:39:16

Or even Traitors!

William L Shirer, it was my daft mistake in the OP.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 16-Jun-26 18:44:39

Worryingly - it is thought that the U.K. is the next in line for Putins aggression, and many suggest that we are in fact already in a type of warfare with Russia - evidence of cyber attacks on a daily basis, interference in our politics, implicated in the violence on our streets etc.

….ps Nigel was in Clacton on Friday, as he often is (most MPs are in their constituencies on Fridays). Just to forestall the next smear.

That’s because most MPs are in HoC or Westminster Mon-Thurs Farage is neither in his constituency nor in Parliament most of his “working week” he too busy doing his other jobs.
