…….due to the defence spending plans. Good for him, maybe it will make those with the purse strings think again. Though I doubt it.

Bo Jo the Clown. Can't remember who said that about Johnson.

There are quite a few choice names for Starmer too.

I would not say I was the most observant of people but even I have noticed this Government is trying to shut down freedom of speech. Any deviation from the party line is not tolerated.

So different from the Boris Government.

I think you are very ungrateful to this government. The only 'freedom of speech' they really seem to have tried to shut down is that of protesting against the continual use of the oil that is a huge contributor to dangerous climate change and protest against the genocide in Gaza. Both highly disapproved of by many Gnetters.

What they've been less successful with is shutting down hate speech and incitement to violence.

But what freedom of speech have you been prevented from exercising, Meandrogrog?

Yes, there are numerous names that could be aimed at Johnson.
😃 😀 😄

Yes I quite agree, Churchillian, best PM by a country mile, especially during Covid, great intellectual, believer in personal freedom. There are some starters!

Oh yes. He really believes in personal freedom doesn’t he. At least we can agree on that. Thinks he’s totally above the law sad.

Wyllow3 Sun 14-Jun-26 00:18:04

There is no way he is "an intellectual".

AI puts it rather well imo..

"A genuine intellectual is defined by a deep, intrinsic passion for knowledge and ideas.

Rather than displaying expertise merely for external validation or status they are oriented toward continuous learning, critical analysis, and uncovering fundamental truths."

Basgetti Sun 14-Jun-26 06:53:58

Johnson, “intellectual”? Oh my. 🤣🤣🤣

Mollygo Sun 14-Jun-26 07:10:50

Trying to think which MPs that definition of intellectual might include.
None immediately spring to mind.

Ken Clarke possibly qualifies, and Tony Benn? Not MPs for a very long time, though.

I am still waiting to hear which speeches you think he gave which are silly?

Wasn't it his love of partying that led to his fall from grace?
The poignant photo of the Queen sitting alone at Prince Philip's funeral, coupled with the details of how Downing Street had spent the same hours?
He was a disgrace.

Boris Johnson was at Chequers the night before Prince Philip’s funeral.

Easy enough to verify…

Just look at how posters on disappearing contributors say they are worried about posting on N&P and suddenly getting cancelled!

Look up RICU, its original purpose was anti terrorism apparently but critics say it risks strangling free speech. There is an article about this organisation in the Mail on Sunday today.

Wyllow3 Sun 14-Jun-26 08:51:49

☺️ bait refused.....

Tuliptree Sun 14-Jun-26 09:35:58

‘Just look at how posters on disappearing contributors say they are worried about posting on N&P and suddenly getting cancelled!’

Just because they say it doesn’t make it true and neither does it mean they even believe it themselves. It is part of a campaign and we should all know better or should do than believe everything uttered during campaigns.

Tuliptree Sun 14-Jun-26 09:39:02

GG -the fact that BJ was at Chequers the night before does not absolve him as PM of what happened at no 10 that night. That happened because he had enabled and facilitated that party culture .

Maremia Sun 14-Jun-26 09:40:47

Absolutely

BJ was a total disaster during COVID. He and his staff regularly flouted the regulations his own government made, parties at No 10, unnecessary journeys by his closes aide 'to test his eyesight'.

A number of official reports have said the start of COVID regulations was bungled and led to unnecessary deaths.

_But most of all_:

Remember all those elderly ill people with COVID, dispatched back to care homes before the virus had cleared? They therefore took back to care homes the infection the home was trying to avoid. This led to the unnecessary deaths of thousands and thousand of people, not just care home residents but care workers and in their families

Remember all those old care home residents with dementia confuses and unhappy, unable to understand why they could not see their nearest and dearest. Many of those people and others died alone and frightened because family members could not be with them, to then be buried without, even all their nearest and dearest present. truly something that Boris could be proud of

Great intellectual? Bunkum. A first class honours degree does not necessarily always mean you are intelligent, merely that you are clever and good at passing exams. I have known a number of people with First class degrees. Brilliant scientists and engineers, but I wouldn't trust them to go to the take-away and bring back the food on the written order.

I do agree that he is a believer in personal freedom - but only for himself and his cronies.

MaizieD Sun 14-Jun-26 15:17:09

Well said, MOnica 👏👏👏

Boris might have been academically intelligent but as a Prime Minister, a politician and a human being, he was/is a totally arrogant ass hat. But, for all of that; he didn't play fast and loose with national security. Step forward Keir and claim your prize.

What? His links with Russians? His escaping his security detail whilst Foreign Secretary? How quickly history is rewritten.

It’s all getting rather silly. The current govt isn’t perfect but it isn’t preventing free speech. Certainly not on this forum

Maremia Sun 14-Jun-26 21:20:38

MOnica good post 👍

National security? Keir Starmer said no to Trump's illegal war.
That was protecting our national security. 👏

That is certainly one way of looking at it.

I would rather we had stood with our US allies. Who knows, Trump might have made the world a safer place.

I dont care how many brickbats get thrown at me 😂

And on top of that he gives Lebedev a knighthood….
