Yes, OldFrill, that is what I said, but obviously not clearly enough - forgive me. Bank holidays are for banks all over Scotland. Public and local holidays are not bank holidays (although public holidays sometimes are) and vary around the country.

The 15th of June holiday will be a bit of a mixture!

Did you read the link? There is no law that requires banks to close in bank holidays.

Scotland has, IIRC, always differed slightly from England when it comes to Bank holidays. How are we supposed to be reacting to this one? Outrage? Envy? Indifference?

With my pedant hat on, I would like to point out that generally in Scotland, unlike England, a bank holiday is a holiday for banks, not a holiday for almost everyone. We have local holidays, usually on a Monday, as well as public holidays like the 1st and 2nd of January, which the banks often take as well. There is an increasing tendency to call local and public holidays "bank holidays" which I find annoying and inaccurate.

It looks as if this extra holiday is going to vary from place to place (just as local holidays do), but no doubt the banks will be shut everywhere!

For clarity, as you are wrong wheniwasyourage -
In Scotland Bank Holidays occur on the same dates throughout Scotland.
Public or local holidays occur on dates that vary according to local councils

The Bank Holiday on 15 June is discretionary, councils can choose whether to observe it or not (many are not for financial reasons), there is no onus on private companies to observe it. Extra pay/time off will depend on individual employee contracts.

We always joke that in Scotland the banks observe the BH’s of every country in the world, they’re so often closed on Mondays! grin

no doubt the banks will be shut everywhere - won't make a difference here, there are no banks!

It’s not a BH in my area of Scotland. The council says the cost to our economy will be into seven figures.

I just find it rather odd that a Bank Holiday has been granted, albeit optional for drunken fans to recover paddyann54 🤷‍♀️

Over half of our employees are England fans, we asked as soon as the England boys had qualified to sort out any holiday days between them to ensure no disruptions in the workplace.

They know we are considerate employers, but, they have been forewarned that any sick days after a match will not be looked on kindly…

Sounds a bit like the Hokey Cokey to me …

While the date was declared as a national bank holiday by the Scottish Government, local authorities were given full discretion. - A`I reports.

We are having local bank holidays in my region.

Tizliz Tue 09-Jun-26 09:44:11

Not all Scotland:

Monday, 15 June 2026 is not a recognized bank holiday for employees of the Highland Council. The local authority voted to reject the formally proposed national World Cup bank holiday to avoid the estimated £150,000 cost and prevent disruptions to essential services like bin collections and schools

I have noticed that most Bank Holidays are ignored in favour of 'local' holidays - it can get very confusing.

paddyann54 Tue 09-Jun-26 09:41:10

It’s because all the fans will still be drunk the day after…..win or lose.Better just making it an official holiday than businesses having no idea how many might make it in to work.
I employed staff for 45 years and it seems like common sense to me

Jaxjacky Tue 09-Jun-26 09:13:44

It’s celebrating Scotland qualifying after 28 years.

MartavTaurus Tue 09-Jun-26 08:45:24

Sort of confusion?

Curiosity actually.

Sorry, found it! I still think it's bizarre.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 09-Jun-26 08:29:21

It has been on ITV breakfast news this morning.

I Googled it to double check, and there it was.

Grandmabatty Tue 09-Jun-26 08:26:07

Where did you read it Grannygravy? I can't find any reference to it

MartavTaurus Tue 09-Jun-26 08:20:06

I guess King Charles could hardly deny that request, could he?

What about the economy? Is it a responsible decision?

Grandmabatty Tue 09-Jun-26 08:18:31

That's bizarre. And I say that as a scot

The King has endorsed Scotlands extra Bank Holiday this year after Scotlands men’s team World Cup game against Haiti which is being played at 2.00am UK time on 14th June which is a Sunday.

I wonder why England hasn’t got a Bank Holiday after their first game, which is mid-week (Wednesday 17th June, 21.00pm)
