Disruption of flights

PS to 03-Mar-26 09:46:16 They are allowed to use (for defence only) two UK airfields - Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean and RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, UK.

They are NOT permitted to use any other UK fields.

In it he quotes a Govt Summary of their position published on March 1st (https://www.gov.uk/government/news/summary-of-the-uk-government-legal-position-the-legality-of-defensive-action-in-respect-of-iranian-regional-attacks which includes the following:-

"As well as defending itself and its position in the region, the UK is acting in the collective self-defence of regional allies who have requested support. The UK and its allies are permitted under international law to use or support force in such circumstances where acting in self-defence is the only feasible means to deal with an ongoing armed attack and where the force used is necessary and proportionate.

Accordingly, the UK has military assets flying in the region to intercept drones or missiles targeting countries not previously involved in the conflict. In addition, the UK has responded to a US request which will facilitate specific and limited defensive action against missile facilities in Iran which were involved in launching strikes at regional allies.

The UK’s actions and related support to its allies is solely focussed on ending the threat of air and missile attacks against regional allies unlawfully attacked by Iran and who have not been involved in hostilities from the outset. It does not signal the UK having any wider involvement in the broader ongoing conflict between the US, Israel and Iran.

The UK remains of the view that a negotiated solution should be supported, and that further escalation into a wider regional conflict should be avoided.

The Government will notify the United Nations Security Council of relevant actions taken under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter."

It is their choice to live where they like. Do you lambast people who live in Spain, another family member has lived in Northern Cyprus for 20 years, and .loves it. My friends daughter works as a teacher at an International school, in Dubai, loves it and the lifestyle.
Rulers in UAE have already said hotels are not to discharge people, and they will foot the bill. You wouldn't get that here would you? Well some people do.

Do you not think it’s wrong of one of our politicians ( the shadow treasurer according to Farage) to spend half his time in Dubai?

I think this thread has moved on, but I'll defend my thinking as you are questioning it. No lambasting here, I actually lived and worked abroad for many many years!

I was just wondering, in a simplistic lighthearted manner, as you do, what attracts them to say Dubai, (other than not paying taxes)? It's hot, humid and dusty, it has a high cost of living, there are strict cultural laws, no alcohol etc!
Personally I'd prefer Monaco or similar!

It wouldn’t suit me but I can see why many like to live in Dubai . Very relaxed and happy place , we loved it there. Not sure why Isabel Oakeshott has quite such a presence on tv but she is entitled to her opinions as is her partner Tice.

I may have missed it but I don't think anyone has mentioned the fact that Iran are building nuclear weapons, in their hands I think we would all be affected. It's easy to say we shouldn't interfere with regime changes in another country but nuclear weapons are something else entirely.

The Irsnian nuclear capability was destroyed during the war last summer.
There was no imminent threat to the USA.

Last summer Trump said America had ‘obliterated’ (his word) Iran’s nuclear capability.

Therefore, Iran could pose no immediate threat now.

So, was Trump lying last summer, or is he lying now? It must be one or the other.

If Trump told me it wasn't raining, I would still check for clouds and puddles, and take an umbrella with me.

If this comes to be, then there could be a let up in airports.

Unless of course another party - US or current Israeli regime - continues to attack in the area - means its still not OK for flights.

I do believe some hotel owners in Qatar are putting up stranded passengers (who were waiting for connecting flights) for free.
Other countries where passengers are stranded are being charged extortionate rates.

Neither am I.
The US withdrew from bombing in Iran the other year too early according to various people in the administration.
They did a lot of damage sure, but weren’t entirely sure it was enough.
The job needs doing properly now.As does damaging the regime there as much as possible.

Attacks on Iran won’t stop because of anything the regime says.

This action was necessary to end decades of misery brought on by Irans brutal regime.

To see videos of young Iranians removing their hijabs and singing and dancing in the streets made me cry.

Disrupted travel is irrelevant.

Going well so far isn’t it!
