A really good result. The family voting - I absolutely accept it was happening and the observers saw it . What I don’t understand is why staff didn’t do anything at the time. However the council is saying nothing was reported at the time to staff. So why didn’t the observers draw it to the stafff attention - but in the polling stations I used to use, staff would have been able to see, the booths were not out of sight

They didn't have to say a word to be offering them something. If you let people go up to a voting booth accompanied and cast the mans vote (whoever it is that is physically putting a cross on that paper) and if you do an election address in their language...rather than English (and even the candidate themselves does a section in it) you have conveyed the message. "The medium is the message".

Even if you literally don't say a word about "You're not expected to follow British ways and speak English" you've conveyed that message by doing those things.

The vote is a stand-in/main point for making it plain women are the equals of men in our country. Remember how hard our ancestors fought for us to be able to vote back at the beginning of the last century? The right to vote is one way to sum up "....and women are people and totally absolutely equal to men without having to do a long speech for it. The message is there in the expectation that we are the ones that cast our vote and we do it the way we have decided.

The non-verbal message was absolutely there - and will have been read and understood - and the message the Greens gave wasn't "this is our country...this is our ways....now join in and integrate and do things that way at points where it matters (eg voting and eg women fully treated as equals to men)". Instead they gave a very inappropriate message - which could easily be seen as = "men are more important", "you don't have to speak our language and adapt to our ways".

I was posting what I heard reported on breakfast news, if ITV are incorrect I assume they will apologise and address their error.

My take on this by-election is that the electorate are willing to vote for anyone other than the main parties.

It was clearly a protest vote, voters to the left who are angry with Labour, plus the core Green voters who went for them last time. I actually feel very encouraged by the result.

On the family voting issue, the people who are accountable are the polling station staff, because they are responsible for policing to make sure that votes are cast lawfully. Although it won’t have affected the vote by more than a few votes, it’s still important and needs to be addressed.

I’m disappointed by the Tory voting numbers, I want to see a resurgence from them, and I thought we’d see the first signs of that now, but it went the other way yesterday.

Goodwin lost to a young, white, working-class woman who can plumb and plaster. Clearly, she must be taking work away from white working-class men and that’s why the Equality Act must be abolished.

Because they say it didn’t happen. My take on it is, that there was probably a couple of instances of this - quite illegal and therefore needs addressing, but to such a low level that it barely registers.

It is just the Trump phenomenon we need to worry about.

I'll probably see it because I don't go to bed until the early hours. No idea how it's going to go. Greens seem to be in the lead with Labour and Reform jostling behind them.

I think it's a great pity that Starmer didn't allow Andy Burnham to stand. He's popular in Manchester and could possibly have won.

Time will tell!

Starmer is/was too scared of Andy Burnham to risk it. But I won’t be putting any money on the new Green MP retaining her seat at the next GE

They were offering a decent ‘working class’ candidate on a progressive policy programme against a bile filled racist and a corporate lobbyist.

I suspect that had Burnham been allowed to run he would have won it for Labour but there was so much fear of a challenge to Starmer. I suspect that this cowardly act alone lost Labour a lot of voters. Starmer will be challenged anyway..

Observers did see 12% of voters take part in family voting we don't know if that affected the result, probably not this time but a close result could be affected so I think should be banned.

Andy Burnham probably would have held the seat for Labour - another own goal for Starmer.

A disappointing, if rather predictable result. Reform didn’t have the landslide some assured us would happen, which is a relief.

Some Green policies are good, IMO, but on the whole a Green government would be disastrous, I think. They tend to seem nice people, despite their anti-feminism, but it doesn’t feel as though some of their flagship policies have been thought through.

I’m not keen on Green policies , especially on drugs and so called sex work. Im pleased Gorton and Denton have an MP with the kind of back story previous Labour MPs had. she sounds like a fighter well aware of the growing gap between hard working people (🌞) and the wealthy.
