Just as a last bit of info about red hats, after googling out of interest it isn’t just an Essex saying but all over the country.I assumed just Essex as we visit friends and relatives there which is where I heard this in the past.It was used really on a par with fur coat, no drawers meaning much the same but with the added hidden implied ‘loose morals’ a red hat denoting a prostitute.
There’s also, if memory serves me well a red hats society for women, which I think came about from the poem with the line I am old I shall wear purple and a red hat that doesn’t go.
