Canadian Elections

Ha! True enough Casdon.
Support for Trump and Starmer is tanking.

I couldn't believe Trump today, I really couldnt! Polivere ticked him off, but its more likely to give support to Carney.

Yes, but Trump has mid terms to face in 2026 and Starmer has a lot longer.

Indeed Wyllow but I think Reform is going to give him a kicking on Thursday….

I agree, I think Reform will peak on Thursday too. There’s still more than four years to go though, and I’m predicting a fall from grace for them before that.

I agree Casdon this might be Reform’s only high point. But Starmer won’t like his bloody nose. Embarrassing.

Not really, everyone knows it will happen and we'll sit it out.

Just reading the Canadian news on the BBC feed, noting the tactical voting. Groups to the left of the Liberals are voting tactically to keep the Conservatives out.

Poilievre is nothing like Trump.
They just both hate Trudeau. 😁

This is the problem FGT.

"Up until January, Poilievre had praised the U.S. president as a “successful businessman” and assured that the two neighboring countries had the same geopolitical enemies. He wasn’t exactly MAGA, but Poilievre drew from the same playbook enough to draw comparisons to Trump — which worked for him until it didn’t."

He initially associated himself with Trump and many people have not forgotten, that be fair I'm sure Poilievre has moved on from this approach.

Just reading now, it!s 8:40 pm here. It’s not quite called officially yet, but looks like a Liberal minority win.

I knew it would be close. I’m very happy to have Carney as leader, finding him well educated and knowledgeable about national and international politics and economics.

I’m a bit concerned about the Parti Quebecois being the 3rd party, since they gave a lot of power if they cosy up to the Conservatives.

I also think part of the reason for Trudeau’s Liberals unpopularity was because they also held a minority government, with the left leaning NDP Being the 3rd party.

Interesting times ahead.

More of that please.

Was the problem the minority government or the ‘left leaning’ 3rd party?

As we are getting daily examples of the excesses of ‘the right’ if given unbridled power I fear that a country that almost votes for ‘the right’ while rejecting ‘left leaning’ isn’t far off actually approving those excesses…

trump hated Trudeau because he was better looking, charismatic and Melania was all over him like a rash.

I wonder whether the King will be invited to their State Opening of Parliament. His mother was in the 1950s, shortly after she became Queen. This would show trump and his little friends that Canada is a sovereign country whose Head of State is King Charles.

So Carney and the Liberals have won. Good, Carney's the right man for the job. He's not minced his words with regard to what Canadians face so they know what they've voted for. Trump's the most unpopular president at 100 days so I'd expect him to start trying to dig himself out of the mess he's got the US in. I think if Canada stands firm, Trump will crumble.

What a relief when I opened my computer this morning.

I did wonder where Parti Quebecois stood, CanadianGran.
The I player feed has a good map/diagram showing the seats.

Still not certain if Poilievre kept his seats. It's a muted hurrah becuase Carney has so much to contend with. I wonder if Trump has any idea really he delivered a Liberal win.

Well done the people of Canada👏👏👏

CanadianGran so pleased for you and the people of your country. They have stood up to a global bully - I hope the rest of the world takes note.

My goodness, it looks like Poillievre is going to lose his seat. I dont take great pleasure in this as its good to have an effective opposition but it shows more than anything the "Trump" effect.

Seen in the eyes of US news outlets:

CNN
“Canada will ‘never’ yield to Trump’s threats as Prime Minister Carney declares election victory”

Usually pro Trump Fox News
In a dramatic reversal, the governing Liberals, who were trailing the official opposition Conservatives in the polls earlier this year, appear poised to win their fourth consecutive term in office thanks to President Donald Trump’s threats against Canada’s economy and sovereignty, according to election watchers

What political experience has Carney had? Very little apparently. A clever man but will he be able to run a party?
Sounds like a mixture of Sunak and Farage; good individual talents but very used to being the boss and not fond of advice or criticism .
Remember thinking what prigs he and his wife were when they resided here.

Now we have hopefully a chance of the liberal fightback against the authoritarians and oligarchs.

Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other liberal internationalist, should take this opportunity to unite against the hardline authoritarians like Putin, Xi, and Trump.

We represent a successful and strong block of countries, more than capable of dealing with the enemies of a free democracy.

The odd thing to me was the polling that "about a quarter" of Canadians would "consider" being part of America!

I didn't believe my husband when he told me but did check it!

Mark Carney,

"The lessons of Brexit are beginning to be applied to the United States"

"When you break off or substantially rupture trade relationships with your major trading partners, Canada included - the most important trading partner of the United States"

"You end up with slower growth, higher inflation, higher interest rates, volatility, weaker currency, a weaker economy"

"We're seeing the early stages of that in the United States"

Congratulations to Mark Carney, and total support to the people of Canada- thanks also to Trump who made it happen due to his idea of invading a sovereign state.

It's the Australian election on Saturday and I wonder if the voting profile will be akin to Canada's. So far the uptick for the liberal left is looking very similar in polls.
