It isn't German policy as things stand, it still remains the suggestion of one minister to the government, which will have to alter German Law to make it possible, and there are no details of "how they will get there" and so on.

It may be worth noting that Rwanda is a very beautiful country and a couple of people I have come across feel it is also very safe. They said it was ‘safer than Britain’ I have never been there, personally, so I can’t judge but maybe they are right ? I wouldn’t think the Germans would even consider using it if it was unsafe.

Africa is a very big continent and there will be many dangers faced in getting to Rwanda for the migrants, but if they’re determined and careful they will surely get there but I can’t help thinking they won’t want to.Also it’s still asking migrants to go to Rwanda to have claims processed which they will see, rightly or wrongly as them never being accepted in a European country.

Taking into account these are vulnerable young girls.
And, they are doing very well.

If you were an Afghan girl, you might well be a lot better off almost anywhere, including Rwanda, than in Afghanistan under the woman-despising Taliban.

Rwanda is in central Africa isn’t it? I’d guess for most asylum seekers it will be no harder than getting to Europe. I think processing asylum applications in Africa is a sensible plan.

Casdon really stupid question but how are asylum seekers meant to find their own way to Rwanda if they’re nowhere near it? And when they do eventually find their way there, do asylum seekers claim asylum from a selection of countries? Or just Germany? But why not Rwanda? Bit confused about this approach.

I think you misunderstand Oreo, he is meaning that asylum seekers will go to Rwanda from their home countries for the applications to be processed, it will be a receiving centre rather than a place they are sent from Germany.

If anyone can make the Rwanda experiment work it’s Germany.

The asylum seekers will have to actually be in Rwanda for their claims to be processed so that’s disingenuous of Miguel Berger.

Let’s be clear, there is no plan of the German Government to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda. The discussion is about processing asylum applications in third countries under international humanitarian law and with support of the United Nations.

Rwanda is going to become mythologicised ( is that a proper word) politically in that people are now going to be saying forever what a great idea it was and how, given time, it would have worked. It might even create a new term, being Rwanda’d.

FriedGreenToms2 - I was thinking that maybe Sunak and Hunt could be special advisors to the new government. I have felt for a very long time that the current parliamentary system is not working. We need collaboration not hostility. This country faces particular problems and it’s not coming up with solutions. The political parties need to work together.

We will indeed see Freya5. It’s in the interests of the French to reduce migration to there, and across the channel, don’t forget. Politically the French are much more aligned to UK Labour, and there’s a lot more chance of co-operation to the benefit of both than there was before the election.

So far, the much anticipated boom in boat migrants since the election hasn’t materialised, much to Nicenanny3’s disappointment I’m sure (where is she these days, another mystery disappearance?).

That must be very frustrating for locals, I agree. Bibby Stockholm has been controversial all the way through for many reasons (remember Legionella and fire risk assessments -fire assessments including it as as 'Grenfell waiting to happen'). You are correct in saying contract for Bibby Stockholme ends beginning of next year so assume they will be going back into hotels up Country as they are not expected to stay in Dorset. They definitely get a free phone each whether it be provided by a Charity or Gov. When you have everything provided then £8 odd pocket money doesn't seem too bad. People on Portland have difficulty getting a decent bus service yet immigrants get an hourly free coach, can't be right surely!
