Labour. Our next Government.

After what I’ve witnessed over the last few years I have no idea why anyone could possibly think that a Labour government will be worse. For one thing, most of the decent Conservatives have either left the party, been thrown out or are planning to stand down at the next election. But then I’m just naive and ill informed I suppose

Labour will be in charge very soon. Do the people of this country want more new towns like Milton Keynes? Or do they want a huge reduction in immigration?

Huge reduction in immigration seems most important judging on what people I know say and what I read.

It’s going to be VERY interesting being under a Labour government. They’ll have inherited a right mess. It’s certainly not going to be easy. Bluddy hell where to start?

I’m still unsure the likes of Lammy, Dawn Butler, Jonathan Aitken are clever enough to be on the top table - either looking after us or representing us abroad.

I hope Labour do well. I really do. It’s going to happen anyway. It’s just that I have this niggling feeling ….

Not at all. I know the reality of creating a new settlement. I spent years on one - and it wouldn’t be what Labour calls a new town. I very much doubt that anyone here has that particular experience. A global financial crisis caused by the poorly regulated financial markets bundling up the junk loans given out with gay abandon by mortgage lenders, regardless of whether or not the recipients could repay the loans, and selling them on as an investment product, I recall.

It was the Labour government that acted promptly to prevent banks becoming bankrupt, thus ensuring that bank depositers accounts didn't become worthless. The UK was actually showing signs of recovery when the tories came to power, implemented their utterly senseless 'austerity' plan and threw the UK into recession.

The financial industry never paid any penalty for their gross irresponsibility.

It’s interesting that open debate on gransnet seems to happen much less often than on the dark side. Mumsnet posters are robust and imo usually well informed. Insult hurling seems less frequent tho it happens strongly.
How anyone can defend this useless inept government is beyond me. Furlough yes overall useful but no magic bullet just something other governments did. Ppe parties etc etc simply awful
Starmer may not be perfection, I do understand some want stronger left leaning commitments. He’s a decent man, he has integrity I’m certain the country will be better with him as PM than any of the pm’s in 14 years

The latter can be achieved far more quickly than the former - and having been involved in the creation of a very large new settlement - you wouldn’t call it a town - I can tell you it takes decades. As with so many things, Labour rely on the electorate being ill-informed, and from what I read on GN they’re not far wrong.

the sooner the better! I am horrified by the actions of this gov't and whatever sort of gov't Labour do will be better than this lot. Labour started the NHS so I have every confidence they'll fix it and ditto for our other welfare services that I've had to use in my time and want to support for others.
I think Labour are deliberately vague or else the right wing press will trash all their ideas.

Some of us probably feel very much that the converse could apply to Tories and their avid supporters.

Saying that others on GN are unlikely to have had experience of creation of a new settlement isn’t insulting, Casdon. If anyone else here has experience of being involved in such a project they are welcome to say so, but from professional experience I would say it’s highly unlikely. Planning? Land acquisition? Infrastructure including roads, drainage, railway station, buses, schools, doctors, shops? And in the case of a new town, far more. This is something which takes a very long time and a very great deal of private and public sector expenditure, to come to fruition. Labour takes the electorate for fools, and in the case of those who vote for them they’re not far wrong.

Not sure anyone here actually believes it’ll be quick or easy, or even come to full fruition, but we do need entire new towns, with good services and a solid infrastructure.

Although we may not be as knowledgeable as you in this particular area, many, if not all of us, do have knowledge, skills and experience in many other areas and sometimes you do tend to “poo poo” all of our comments.

Surely even you can see some of the damage your precious govt has done? Austerity was nothing to do with our cost of living crisis, Tories implemented it almost immediately they came into power, long before energy prices rose, or Covid or Brexit.

Our current govt has had 14 years to reduce immigration, both arriving legally and by illegal means have increased under this govt.

Please show me in the Starmer/Labour manifesto where it states they intend to “open the floodgates” and let even more people in?

I’ve seen lots and lots of building across large parts of Essex, where I live, over the last few years. How many new schools? None. New hospitals? None. New roads? None. How many affordable housing? A big fat zero! Lots of luxury flats, some in one of our smaller seafront towns up for almost £1m, a few luxury housing estates. Even a retirement village just in early stages, but nothing for first time buyers!

There’s no excuse you can come up with for being so insulting about other Gransnetters Germanshepherdsmum, it’s unforgivable.
