Last Xmas day our next door neighbour (wearing a wetsuit) swam in our pond.

I swim in a local lake but the state of our rivers and water ways are a disgrace. Only 16% reach EU standards of cleanliness- still that doesn’t matter does it!

Why are our resident GN Tories not here to massively approve of the great idea, I wonder?

Here on south coast, Southern Water is a bit of a joke. £90m fine (no doubt my money, not the shareholders') recently, and apparently they've been discharging into the sea again. No doubt they're not the only ones

As chemicals for water purification are getting very difficult to import, this is increase hugely. Why are people not up in arms about this?

I remember when David Walliams did a sponsored swim along the Thames very near where we lived and became very ill soon after. He wasn't alone, often saw people swim in the river in the summer, not advisable Weil's disease to mention just one health hazard!

My eldest son frequently canoes in rivers. The way to avoid Weil's disease is apparently to drink loads of coca cola.

What is happening is a real disgrace and the Governement intend to stop any attempt to put an end to this.

And yes, it is directly related to Brexit - and the fact that Johnson and co are prepared to protect the big businesses that now run those essential Water Companies.

What I don't get is why our Devon MP isn't bothered to change this for the greater good. Grrrr.

An ornithologist acquaintence up here in Argyll says that one of the reasons eider duck populations are falling is because there isn't enough sewage in the waters they frequent. I asked him what kind of sewage and he said "human". I guess the organisms that eiders feed on need fertilising.

Have to say I was quite surprised by this information.

I have a friend to swims regularly in our wee loch where there also happens to be a good population of eiders some years.

Southern Water has been rubbish for at least a couple of decades.

Our family are all keen on water sports; my husband kayaks and windsurfs, our daughter and her family are regular paddleboarders, our eldest son is an open water swimmer (sea and river), and our youngest son is a keen snorkeller. We live within throwing distance of a river and the sea is a ten minute walk away.

My local MP has publicly bemoaned the state of water pollution and had photo ops on beach cleans etc. - and yet voted with the government against the much needed protections for our rivers and seas. As far as I’m concerned this is evidence of his hypocrisy and a shameful lack of integrity.
