A big thank you to those who voted for Brexit

I've just been reading about the additional charges that people buying goods from the UK are having to pay on purchases arriving in EU countries. So much so that many retailers are no longer selling to people in the EU. The list is long but includes M & S, John Lewis and Fortnums. I buy a variety of things from the UK, including clothing and health supplements. I am no longer able to do this. But it's not just me and other Brits living abroad, it's everybody in the EU.

So, those cheesemakers will have a hard time and I will no longer be able to buy the very good quality cheddar from my local supermarket (which the French like to, not just Brits) because it will be too expensive.

I imagine you’ll be having great empathy then with the Republican voters - 75,00,000 of them - over in America right now MaizieD as their votes didn’t go their way just as yours didn’t after Brexit?

Of course I don't, Ug. That is the most desperate and ridiculous (so ridiculous I don't have words to express my disgust at it) comparison to make. If anything, Trump's followers, whipped up by a torrent of lies and hatred, bear a very close resemblance to 'Beleavers', who, having swallowed all the lies and half truths about the EU, have put their trust in the most appallingly mendacious (that means lying), divisive and incompetent person ever to have been a British PM.

Your final paragraph is quite interesting and am sure will incite outrage from those who do not recognise the similarities and even yet are prepared to ignore a democratic vote.

Another weird post. Can you feel my outrage????

Whitewavemark2 Mon 11-Jan-21 11:36:32

Don’t forget that you won’t be able to pack a picnic for your journey if you are travelling to an EU country next summer.

"Welcome to Brexit!" Says the Dutch border control officer who's now in charge of confiscating ham sandwiches. From taking back control to taking away your rolls.

varian Mon 11-Jan-21 11:38:42

I suspect that some brexiters are more worried about the restrictions on their second homes in Spain than their ham sandwiches., WWM2.

“If you do find yourself affected by temporary shortages of certain foodstuffs, do remember that ‘sovereignty’ is a perfect substitute for most ingredients in most recipes.”

Here we go with the lies again.

All we ever wanted was confirmation that this is what the country really wanted before taking such a huge step.

The Daily Mail just published an article about Brexit causing food shortages... I KNOW! ?

Don’t know why I quoted you varian?

Maybe on Gransnet there should be a whole thread section entitled ‘We are all doomed’

It will be somewhere for the permanently enraged to rant about how awful it is that we’ve left the EU, and the rest of us who are of an optimistic mindset that we will positively thrive, can leave you all in peace to wallow in your own determined negativity.

Oh what a great idea JE??

It's very patronising to think that those who dont agree with you are negative, we just dont agree with you.

We had a vote and the outcome has been carried out. What more does that vote require to be democratic?

I will not tell you we are better off for carrying it out if we are not.
I will not praise you for "rescuing" us from something that did not, in my view, exist.
I will not feel it my duty not to criticise the deal we got.
I will back every attempt to improve the position we have got ourselves in to.
I will continue to think, and possibly say, that large swaths of leave voters, but not all, were taken in by the ambitions of a group of very wealthy and/or very right wing people.

All this is mine and everyone else's democratic right. There is still, so far, freedom of speech in this country.

As far as I can see the only people still arguing or even talking about the actual vote are the leave voters. The rest of us are trying to make sense of, and ask for improvement on, the outcome. Is that what you see as undemocratic?

Good post PippaZ.
I have yet to understand how the optimism or pessimism of people on Gransnet can influence the implementation of Brexit.

It wasMaisie who said she was entitled to be bitter. These posts get social media a bad name, these are obviously very heavily weighted posts from the remain group. I am not prepared to put my views to those with closed minds. So it’s all yours as it’s completely biased.

At least though it’s only a few posters. A mere handful who post again and again, out of the hundreds and hundreds of GNers. They need a place to gather and vent, although it would be far healthier for them to accept things and move on.
Forums aren’t real life, thank goodness.

Mildmanneredgran Mon 11-Jan-21 13:50:36

To the original poster - you're most welcome. I'm saving my thanks (not thanks) to those who voted the Conservative party in, who have made a complete pig's ear of both Brexit and the coronavirus crisis.

Greta Mon 11-Jan-21 14:01:27

I disagree with the idea that people who voted remain in the referendum must now shut up and 'get over it'. We know the vote has now been implemented, Brexit is in the past. However, that doesn't mean that I, and others with me, must agree that the vote to leave was the right one. We have been promised that we will 'prosper mightily' outside the EU. Good, but please don't keep saying it, show us! And can we take it that this prosperity will reach us all, that we will all feel that we have gained something. Not just the ones who are already prospering.

I am not in any "remain" group personally. It would be a little pointless now. Just as pointless as being in a "leave" group would be as that bit is over, it has gone, we have left. Things have changed and most people have moved on.

Maisie is entitled to be bitter about anything she feels bitter about - so are you and everyone else. That doesn't mean people don't have great faith in the British people in getting us out of the mire. I certainly do, but it will be some time before I forgive those who did this and and did it so badly. Hopefully we never see democracy meaning we can be told how to think, which is what seems to be the suggestion, at times, by ex leave voters.

Before you know it we will be talking about how we can move forward, who should benefit and whether we should get closer to the EU again, or not. All that will be democratic discussion. If you are not prepared to join in you may, in this democratically country, leave that discussion to others.

Am I in a remain group without being aware of it, I hate it when that happens.

Cant stand the "lets all move on" type comments- why should we? That would mean owning or supporting something which has removed freedoms, put up barriers and made many poorer. No thanks. If you don't want to read the criticisms of the turd that is Brexit then don't . The country is still divided whatever the pollyannas wish to think.

Philippa111 Mon 11-Jan-21 14:47:54

I'm in Scotland and friends who would never in a million years have considered voting SNP are all changing their minds.
The words 'Down the tubes' come to mind.

Do we have any choice? It's a complete mess done for selfish reasons, but we are out. Moving on does not have to be bad. I doubt we will be allowed back in but I also think the EU will adapt, change and move on itself over the coming years. What we can look forward to is better agreements with an even better, more adaptable, EU.

However, what Johnson and his troops want is far from good for any of us and we have to deal with him until the next election (although we can hope it's sooner than that). He has shown he is prepared to act illegally towards parliament and take away the rights of our elected MPs without blanching at the laws, rules and accepted traditions he breaks. In that he is certainly like Trump.

There is a lot to do and it probably cannot be done quickly but step by step we can get our country into a position that is better for everyone not just those who think they are owed special privileges and expect personal 'sovereignty' while taking it away from others.

Don't you find it interesting that there's rather more people on this thread who are critical than those who support Brexit. What does that tell you?

As for the others who are so optimistic I don't think one of you has mentioned where all the new start ups will be and what sort of businesses. And no, you can't say the green economy because I did that a few pages back.
