A big thank you to those who voted for Brexit

I've just been reading about the additional charges that people buying goods from the UK are having to pay on purchases arriving in EU countries. So much so that many retailers are no longer selling to people in the EU. The list is long but includes M & S, John Lewis and Fortnums. I buy a variety of things from the UK, including clothing and health supplements. I am no longer able to do this. But it's not just me and other Brits living abroad, it's everybody in the EU.

So, those cheesemakers will have a hard time and I will no longer be able to buy the very good quality cheddar from my local supermarket (which the French like to, not just Brits) because it will be too expensive.

I cannot answer for my suppliers, but we have placed orders (I am using the royal we as I haven’t physically been into the office since March 2020) since opening after the holidays, had confirmation of said orders and delivery predictions only a couple of days longer than 2020.

It will be interesting to hear more as the year progresses.

I totally agree with you on that.

A voice of reason GG13 thank you for your very timely posts! That’ll shut them up.

Joke.
?

Oh varian I’m sorry to disappoint but we (everybody - suppliers + customers) were being warned as far back as early October that there would be ‘bumps in the road’.

Things will sort themselves out we just have to have a bit of patience. And faith. Which I have and most of you don’t. You don’t have businesses either. But you do get very het up.

Even on DAY 8.

I have already come a cropper to Brexit.
One of my cancer medications is no longer available so it has been substituted by a more generic one which is causing me many unpleasant side effects.

I feel desperate for folk like yourself. The children with severe epilepsy are suffering so unnecessarily.

Meanwhile the leavers sit back and enjoy their sovereignty.

Urmstongran Fri 08-Jan-21 18:43:36

I don’t ‘sit back’ and enjoy anybody’s ill health WW. That was a pretty insensitive remark.

I’m very sorry indeed dragonfly to hear your change of medication is causing you to have side effects.

When we buy a branded drug like Neurofen which is expensive, we are reassured to be told that generic ibuprofen works just as well. We are paying the branded firm for their advertising costs etc.

I wonder what your doctor thinks?

I hope you get it sorted soon. I’m genuinely sorry you are struggling.

Read what my post said.

But saying that did you believe at the time of your voter leave that very sick people would struggle as a result of your vote?

Meanwhile I wish you well as you enjoy your sovereignty

Urmstongran Fri 08-Jan-21 18:58:56

No I didn’t think that at all WW.

Plus the Remain campaign did not say that would be the outcome if we didn’t vote ‘their’ way.
I do recall a poster who regularly told us about isotope shortages but has never mentioned it since so I presume that hasn’t happened either?

I genuinely do not believe our government would jeopardise our health. Negotiations on medicines will have taken place over many months. Nothing in the news about adverse outcomes?

GrannyGravy13 Fri 08-Jan-21 18:59:47

Whitewavemark2 if the EU decides not to export medication to countries who are not part of their club then surely the anger should be directed towards them?

I shall wait to see if my usual medication is awaiting for me in February (all produced in the EU)

vegansrock Fri 08-Jan-21 19:03:49

My son sold a football programme for £5 on eBay to someone living in Spain. He had to print off a custom declaration, spend 5 minutes filling it in and stick it on the envelope. No one will read it and it is a complete waste of time, not mention energy and paper. Imagine that kerfuffle multiplied millions of times by all sorts of traders. No wonder business person will stop bothering .

Whitewavemark2 Fri 08-Jan-21 19:04:19

You are both way off the mark. Blaming others for the result if your vote simply doesn’t cut it.

Leavers were warned and warned of the consequences.

You post shows that you still don’t understand. For heavens sake!! Your vote has caused real and existential problems.

varian Fri 08-Jan-21 19:10:14

UG posts-

"Oh varian I’m sorry to disappoint but we (everybody - suppliers + customers) were being warned as far back as early October that there would be ‘bumps in the road’. A bit presumptious, and totally fallacious, UG to assume that no-one who did not support brexit has a business. Just look at the record.

The CBI and the small business organisations and all of our our professional associations were, and still are, totally opposed to your brexit nonsense.

vegansrock Fri 08-Jan-21 19:12:11

If the U.K. decides to opt out of a club in order not to abide by the club rules or pay the membership fee they can’t expect the club to provide the same services.

Urmstongran Fri 08-Jan-21 19:12:36

The CBI have great form in getting their analyses wrong. Wise people discount their predictions.

varian Fri 08-Jan-21 19:17:47

The CBI, the TUC, the Bank of England, our universities and research bodies, all of our trade and professional organisations- all supported Remaining in the EU. - in other words the "experts" that Gove told the guillible leave voters to despise.

Just imagine where we might be now without the experts who developed the covid vaccine - would you rather just rely on Gove and the rest of the Vote Leave liars?

Urmstongran Fri 08-Jan-21 19:33:50

Your scattergun attack is exhausting to even try to unpick varian.

Some of it is very old ground which at the time I commented upon fully, to the best of my own research abilities. Check out my historic posts if you can be bothered.

Now?
No thanks. I’m not going over it ad nauseam. Too boring for those reading this thread.

Brexit is DONE.
We are out of the EU jurisdictions (well most of them).

It’s time to move on.

Urmstongran Fri 08-Jan-21 19:34:39

P.s. it isn’t ‘ALL’ either. As you well know. Such hyperbole.

I really don’t know where you get the patience. As you say earlier, we are only 8 days in.
All the hate directed at voters who voted to leave the EU is sickening...... particularly from ( presumably)mature women.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 08-Jan-21 19:44:58

U.K. Gov’s demand that external companies have to register with HMRC, and pay VAT in advance, is key reason many won’t now sell to individuals in U.K.

dragonfly46 Fri 08-Jan-21 19:47:23

Oh gosh Urmstongran you don’t need to apologise to me. You are not responsible. It is what it is. My glass is always half full and I am sure these problems will be ironed out. Just a bit down at the moment.

Urmstongran Fri 08-Jan-21 19:47:39

It’s dispiriting isn’t it lemongrove. Wears me down after a bit.

So, I turned instead to read an article in the Guardian on happiness.

This sentence jumped out at me - coming straight from this gloomy thread -

“The research shows we make happiness mistakes all the time: we complain too much, thinking we’re letting off steam, but do so at the cost of noticing the good things in life.”

Just about summed it up for me tonight.

Urmstongran Fri 08-Jan-21 19:51:12

Thank you dragonfly for saying that. It means a lot especially as, at present, you have more to be upset about than most on here right now.

I hope your symptoms subside as they can’t be pleasant and may well be upsetting. I also hope your doctor can offer you an alternative or some reassurance going forward. x

GrannyGravy13 Fri 08-Jan-21 19:53:48

dragonfly I would like to reiterate what Urmstongran has posted
