A big thank you to those who voted for Brexit

I've just been reading about the additional charges that people buying goods from the UK are having to pay on purchases arriving in EU countries. So much so that many retailers are no longer selling to people in the EU. The list is long but includes M & S, John Lewis and Fortnums. I buy a variety of things from the UK, including clothing and health supplements. I am no longer able to do this. But it's not just me and other Brits living abroad, it's everybody in the EU.

So, those cheesemakers will have a hard time and I will no longer be able to buy the very good quality cheddar from my local supermarket (which the French like to, not just Brits) because it will be too expensive.

I suspect other views are very much unwelcome unless the poster doesn’t support the Conservatives and is also somebody who liked the EU.

political bias from Gransnet then? (which there would have to be if they were deleting posts from people on this basis)

no

OK....

lemongrove Sat 16-Jan-21 10:07:13

It causes spats and pile ons ( like those on Urmston) then posts are deleted, it just isn’t worth it.
Those of us who are happy with the outcome ( leaving the EU) may as well leave this kind of thread for those who want to complain ad nauseam about Brexit. That way, we’ll all be happy.?
End of explanations.

lemongrove ditto

Sometimes it would be nice to see just a bit of empathy from leave supporters when individual cases of hardship/problems due to brexit are raised but I have yet to see that happen. There is never any acknowledgement that brexit is harming some people/companies/industries. It’s casually just brushed aside. And that saddens me.

Urmstongran Sat 16-Jan-21 11:36:48

Actually I’ve been thinking the same lemongrove and GG13. I usually enjoy the political debates but have decided ‘I’m done’ now. Those who didn’t vote to Brexit will never be happy in my humble. Not just the wider aspects either. Nit picking too.

These pro-EU/anti Brexit threads are a perfect place for their echo chambers so (a little reluctantly) I’m out now.

Peace & unchallenged opinions can hold sway now as far as I’m concerned - with everyone being able to say ‘oh yes you’re so right so-and-so’. No deleted posts. Everybody calm and in agreement.

I shan’t be challenging any more.

HQ do not delete posts for the sake of it. I’ve had posts deleted. When it happens I accept it and learn from it

Why am I being hypocritical? I would like to know. Can you give me an example please.

It became like that Casdon for a particular reason that I have already spoken of.
Therefore far better to leave this thread for those who voted Remain and are wanting to vent.

Are you feeling persecuted or not? It’s very hard to tell.

PippaZ Sat 16-Jan-21 18:28:58

I wonder if others find this relevant to this thread?

biba70 Sat 16-Jan-21 19:30:20

Indeed Pipa- spot on.

QED ''Those of us who are happy with the outcome ( leaving the EU) may as well leave this kind of thread for those who want to complain ad nauseam about Brexit. That way, we’ll all be happy.?

when those who voted for it realise all the project fears are turning, one by one, into project disastrous reality- they just want to stop discussing it. I wonder why? Could it be ... that it is dawning at last and they know there is little they can put forward that would stand?

Almost 'nice' to see this place can be just as unpleasant when I keep away.

Yet another distinguished Briton applies for an EU passport. So many of our "brightest and best"- are joining the brexit brain drain.

Sir Simon apparently has a Czech wife and dual nationality children. He is one of the most brilliant musicians of our generation. Why would he want to stay in the UK...

When started this post a few people criticised me for thinking about my own needs. The reverse of me stating that I could no longer buy - clothes, cheese and health supplements for example, is that the manufacturers of those products can't sell them to me. Today, in one of the local supermarkets the shelves selling UK foods was virtually empty. I suspect that they won't be refilled with British products any time soon. And, by the way, there is a section called "etrangers" which has Chinese, Dutch, German and products from some other countries.

I'd be interested to know what percentage of Frank Cooper's marmalade is sold to the EU.

Before anybody else tells me that I should be buying French produce I can assure people that 99% of my shopping is French stuff. My main beef with the French is that it is difficult to find wines from countries other than France in most supermarkets, other than the largest. We did manage to find a couple of bottles of Sicilian white today - the only etranger in the shop. Apart from prossecco.

Mamie Sun 17-Jan-21 04:39:39

Dinahmo you need to go to Lidl. You can buy Spanish, Italian, Chilean and South African wine. All very good and excellent prices. Our medium sized supermarkets have an increasingly good range of Cava.
We have sourced horseradish from Amazon.de and most spices seem to be online. Brinjal pickle is the big problem.
If people think we should eat nothing but French food they they might want to think about cutting out everything except British food.

At least those Brexit supporters aren’t crowing about all the tangible benefits of Brexit they are enjoying are they?

Is that meant to be satirical?

petra Sun 17-Jan-21 09:45:18

I'm crowing ? Why, because thanks to not being in the eu
2 of my elderly neighbours are having their vaccinations which has cheered them up tremendously ?
As you were.

What nonsense

PippaZ Sun 17-Jan-21 10:51:32

The bigger the lie the more they fall for it Whitewave. Just look at America. James Comey was on one of the politics programmes this morning and, obviously, talking about Trump and the belief in the "big lie". He added that some people will never see through it and reminded the audience that even when fraudsters plead guilty their crimes those subject to this abuse will often still go to court to stand up for them. It is very hard to admit to having been taken in. I think this means there will be a kernel of a group who continue to believe in the UK's "Big Lie" and the liars who perpetrated it, for a long time to come.
