Oh dear.

Tracy Brabin, aged 58y, Labour MP for Batley, ex ‘Corrie’ soap actress wore this yesterday in the HoC.

I was embarrassed on her behalf. What do you think about her choice of outfit for work?

SirChenjin Wed 05-Feb-20 15:50:18

So now you're all appearing to say that the dress wasn't appropriate for the HoC

No we’re all really not.

Greymar Wed 05-Feb-20 15:51:55

A girl of 18 can be forgiven for a wardrobe error but not a woman of 58

What happens if you are 19?

suziewoozie Wed 05-Feb-20 15:51:56

Oops try reading the thread before you post. You know it makes sense

Callistemon Wed 05-Feb-20 15:52:05

Ah, how this thread reminds me of that other pme grin

A young man was hauled over the coals by his female line manager for turning up to work at the weekend inappropriately dressed for the office.

But, of course, he was male and should have known better.

Double standards.

Callistemon Wed 05-Feb-20 15:52:43

One not one

It's been a long day and lots to go yet

Callistemon Wed 05-Feb-20 15:53:04

Autocorrect again

SirChenjin Wed 05-Feb-20 15:53:50

Good point Greymar

At what age can a woman be forgiven for showing a shoulder at work? confused I’m 50, am I too young? Too old? These arbitrary GN age rules are all so confusing....

suziewoozie Wed 05-Feb-20 15:54:47

Lemon you are seriously boring

Greymar Wed 05-Feb-20 15:56:04

I would love to see a portly male in a black mesh top. I'm sorry, there you have it. I have tried for years to keep this secret but I just can't.

Maggiemaybe Wed 05-Feb-20 15:57:17

What a non-event. I admire Tracey Brabin and was surprised to see the photo of her in a dress that wasn’t the slightly formal office attire that is the expected dress code for anyone, of whatever gender, in the HoC. I held back from commenting till she explained. Which she has. Perfectly understandable and it’s admirable that she’s dashing about as she is with a broken ankle.

Nothing to see here, folks.

SirChenjin Wed 05-Feb-20 15:58:19

Shall we just leave you there with your black mesh fantasy...?wine

Callistemon Wed 05-Feb-20 15:59:36

Greymar grin
It's not one of my fantasies but each to their own!

Do you have a particular portly male in mind?

MerylStreep Wed 05-Feb-20 16:00:13

If the dress 'slipped off her shoulder' why is it in that position in a photo taken earlier at the event she left to 'rush to the commons'?

suziewoozie Wed 05-Feb-20 16:00:13

Oh Maggie there is everything to see here in terms of the darker side of GN.

Callistemon Wed 05-Feb-20 16:00:20

Oh, I missed SirChenjin's post

I really want to know now.

suziewoozie Wed 05-Feb-20 16:03:54

Urm now you know the context, aren’t you just a tiny bit embarrassed on your own behalf?

Callistemon Wed 05-Feb-20 16:06:05

Why?

SirChenjin Wed 05-Feb-20 16:10:26

Presumably because there is no need for Urm to be embarrassed on her behalf.

suziewoozie Wed 05-Feb-20 16:19:13

Plus the use of the word ‘choice’ isn’t quite accurate is it?

Chewbacca Wed 05-Feb-20 16:21:02

Some days of the week I work from home. On those days I might not actually get dressed at all and I'll work all day in my pj's.
Some days of the week I go into the office to work. I don't go into the office wearing my pjs, I wear a suit and I look what I am; a professional woman in the workplace.

The work I do from home is exactly the same as in the office; it is not impacted by what I wear. But out of respect for my employer and my colleagues, I wear clothing that respects the environment that I am in, and the people who have to work with and around me.

I am a professional woman in the workplace, who not only respects my employer and my colleagues; I have self respect too. I therefore wear a formal suit. It's not difficult these days. You can pick them up for about £35.

Callistemon Wed 05-Feb-20 16:26:44

It's not difficult to take a jacket with you - in fact you need one this weather anyway.
Or keep one at work in case you are called to speak in the H of C at any time!

Chestnut Wed 05-Feb-20 16:37:04

So many excuses for not being properly dressed! ?‍♂️
A professional person would ensure they have a jacket handy at all times in case of a professional engagement.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Wed 05-Feb-20 16:37:40

It's inappropriate and looks as if she's just fallen out of a nightclub and gone back to work. How lacking in common sense do you need to be to think this is all right? I can't imagine anyone getting away with this in your average office without comments being passed.

MaizieD Wed 05-Feb-20 16:45:29

I suggest that you read the thread before commenting, lovebeigecardigans

If you had you will see that at 15,25 prestbury gave us Brabin's explanation of why she was wearing the dress. She hadn't even expected to be in Parliament. She wore it to a completely different event.

Was she expected to say 'Oooh, no, I can't do an emergency session at the despatch box because I'm wearing the wrong dress' ?

(Obviously some people think she was grin )

growstuff Wed 05-Feb-20 16:46:08

There must be an awful lot of bored posters today.

For those who missed it … Brabin was at a music event in the afternoon, where she looked absolutely appropriately dressed. She has a broken foot and has her leg in cast. She was called unexpectedly to the HoC. It's conceivable that she had a coat, but no jacket. It wouldn't be that easy to carry extra clothing around and it wouldn't have been that easy just to run to her office to fetch one.

Did anybody actually make a note of what she said? Or didn't that matter?
