The Labour shadow Culture Secretary - wearing this in the HoC?

Oh dear.

Tracy Brabin, aged 58y, Labour MP for Batley, ex ‘Corrie’ soap actress wore this yesterday in the HoC.

I was embarrassed on her behalf. What do you think about her choice of outfit for work?

SirChenjin Wed 05-Feb-20 18:42:51

Exactly growstuff.

It’s a bit of shoulder Urm - she obviously wasn’t embarrassed by it (she obviously had other, more pressing things to worry about) and there’s no need for you to feel anything on her behalf (except admiration for her stoicism and attention to the important things perhaps).

growstuff Wed 05-Feb-20 18:34:07

Did you always turn up for work at 6pm with little notice, appropriately dressed, when you had a broken foot and had been attending another event on company business?

Barmeyoldbat Wed 05-Feb-20 18:31:10

I judge an MP by their actions not by their dress code. May good old Boris will turn up in those awful shorts he wears.

Chewbacca Wed 05-Feb-20 18:29:59

Your last 3 posts, all directly and personally critical of a named poster, has made it abundantly clear that you just don't like that person at all. You seem to have an axe to grind sooziewoozie?

Urmstongran Wed 05-Feb-20 18:24:29

I didn’t say anything about whether (or not) she was hardworking (or effective). This thread was all about the (lack of!) dress. Too much skin on show in a workplace. I’d have got sent home by my line manager at the hospital, for turning up to work dressed like that. Quite right too. In my opinion!

Thank you iIlovecheese and Callistemon.

And sooziewoozie if you don’t like this thread - stop posting! Simples.

suziewoozie Wed 05-Feb-20 17:54:30

And yes JE it is a jacket she’s wearing in the photograph. Well done. The only thing is, the photograph was taken TODAY. Still who cares about facts on a thread slagging off a woman? Pesky pesky facts

suziewoozie Wed 05-Feb-20 17:48:29

And there isn’t a constant attempt at ridiculing Urm just deserved criticism

suziewoozie Wed 05-Feb-20 17:46:10

Well I’m with Sir on this. There’s far too much posting on GN without a thought as to the context. When I saw the photo, my first thought was of surprise because it didn’t ‘fit’ with what I ‘knew’ of TB. If someone had posted about another affair of BJ’s it would have ‘fitted’ with preexisting knowledge we have of him. It would have been congruent. This wasn’t but the OP jumped in and then there were some really really nasty posts making ridiculous sweeping judgements about TB. I’ve said several times that I found the dress inappropriate but that some of the comments were appalling. If Urm hadn’t wanted that sort of bunfight, she could have come back on and said so. Apologising isn’t always enough - thinking first is a good idea. On the truly awful MM threads, Urm made an unnecessary and unkind comment about an aspect of MMs physical appearance. She then apologised but why not just be more careful? TB doesn’t deserve the nasty comments on here but she was seen as a cheap and easy target when in fact she’s a hardworking decent person. This thread was cheap and nasty and unnecessary but a useful dead cat to avoid the real issues of the day - the attempts to control the press, the furore with Claire Perry, the joke that is JH as chair of the Health Select Committee, the Patterson Report etc etc but no let’s pile in on a woman. FFS

SirChenjin Wed 05-Feb-20 17:44:07

I don’t think it’s been her choice of top that’s generated the level of interest you’re referring to. Rather, it’s been the misogyny, double standards and complete and utter irrelevance of a top.

Callistemon Wed 05-Feb-20 17:33:55

There was another thread on that subject.
Interesting that that is not as popular as this thread which seems to prove the point that this MP's attire has been a distraction from what she was saying - not just on here but all across social media, apparently.

mcem Wed 05-Feb-20 17:30:11

She was discussing the disgraceful situation when officials at no 10 divided journalists into 2 groups.
One approved group would be permitted to attend the briefing while those who are critical of BJ and co would not be admitted.
ALL the journalists, both goodies and baddies, chose to walk out.
I am far more concerned about this new level of censorship than I am about T B's dress!

SirChenjin Wed 05-Feb-20 17:29:12

I take a different view. If you start a thread with the sole intention of ridiculing a woman’s top of all things then you’ll have to accept that you might just be called out on it. I see that as a good thing - there should be no place for that kind of misogyny on here and some of the posts that followed.

Callistemon Wed 05-Feb-20 17:15:07

Well said, Ilovecheese

I don't agree with all Urmstomgran's posts either but she has as much right to post them as anyone else without the constant attempts at ridicule.

Ilovecheese Wed 05-Feb-20 17:08:30

If I may just put a word in for Urmstongran I very rarely agree with her, but I think Gransnet would be a much duller forum without her threads. I have also noticed that she is willing to freely admit if she gets something wrong, which , in my view, makes her a more likeable character than some others.

Chestnut Wed 05-Feb-20 17:04:43

More personal abuse and childish insults suziewoozie?
'your god'?????
If that's supposed to be Boris then you're way off the mark. I only support Boris in delivering Brexit. He is no god of mine.
Get a grip. ?

Nezumi65 Wed 05-Feb-20 17:02:17

Why does it matter JE? It didn’t cause her to not be able to speak or get terrorism and counter-terrorism mixed up, or lie her socks off. It’s not a bikini. It’s one shoulder.

Greymar Wed 05-Feb-20 17:00:50

I wasn't a fan of Mrs May but I thought she looked terribly ill and exhausted sometimes. It's not to do with Labour/Tories, it's just vile for women to be slagging off other women. Must make you feel good bout yourselves I guess.

JenniferEccles Wed 05-Feb-20 17:00:00

So are you saying that wasn’t a jacket she is clearly wearing in the picture?

Why didn’t she keep it on?

Callistemon Wed 05-Feb-20 16:58:06

I like the red cast, if it's possible to like a plaster cast.
I had a purple one
One of those scooters would have been handy.

Nezumi65 Wed 05-Feb-20 16:57:07

Perhaps someone should have found her a HoC napkin or something to save her from the pearl clutching.

If I was in that paster cast I think I’d be in trackie bottoms and a hoodie - so she’s done well.

suziewoozie Wed 05-Feb-20 16:51:40

And whilst you’re tying yourself in knots, perhaps you could explain what’s professional about the perpetual lying that your god indulges in constantly?

suziewoozie Wed 05-Feb-20 16:49:46

Chestnut your posts are getting sillier and sillier and sillier and appear to demonstrate a total unwillingness to throw in the towel. I’m almost embarrassed on your behalf ( to more or less coin a phrase) ?

growstuff Wed 05-Feb-20 16:46:08

There must be an awful lot of bored posters today.

For those who missed it … Brabin was at a music event in the afternoon, where she looked absolutely appropriately dressed. She has a broken foot and has her leg in cast. She was called unexpectedly to the HoC. It's conceivable that she had a coat, but no jacket. It wouldn't be that easy to carry extra clothing around and it wouldn't have been that easy just to run to her office to fetch one.

Did anybody actually make a note of what she said? Or didn't that matter?

MaizieD Wed 05-Feb-20 16:45:29

I suggest that you read the thread before commenting, lovebeigecardigans

If you had you will see that at 15,25 prestbury gave us Brabin's explanation of why she was wearing the dress. She hadn't even expected to be in Parliament. She wore it to a completely different event.

Was she expected to say 'Oooh, no, I can't do an emergency session at the despatch box because I'm wearing the wrong dress' ?

(Obviously some people think she was grin )

lovebeigecardigans1955 Wed 05-Feb-20 16:37:40

It's inappropriate and looks as if she's just fallen out of a nightclub and gone back to work. How lacking in common sense do you need to be to think this is all right? I can't imagine anyone getting away with this in your average office without comments being passed.
