Oh dear.

Tracy Brabin, aged 58y, Labour MP for Batley, ex ‘Corrie’ soap actress wore this yesterday in the HoC.

I was embarrassed on her behalf. What do you think about her choice of outfit for work?

MaizieD Wed 05-Feb-20 19:52:45

You're another one who didn't read the thread, Kandinsky.

No problem with Ugstarting the thread, but to continue, once the circumstances leading to her wearing it in the House have been explained, condemning her for her 'choice' of outfit does rather point to an ulterior motive...

Summerlove Wed 05-Feb-20 19:49:23

Misogyny is so much fun.

Summerlove Wed 05-Feb-20 19:48:09

Just look business ready ! Not ready for business

Do you genuinely not see how this could be interpreted as trashing someone as a person?

SirChenjin Wed 05-Feb-20 19:44:58

Unnecessary.

Kandinsky Wed 05-Feb-20 19:43:58

Think she’s forgotten she’s no longer propping up the bar at the Rovers.

PECS Wed 05-Feb-20 19:38:06

I have started threads because I know it will spark discussion.. otherwise why post, unless you are seeking specific advice?

I think the OP was well aware of what they were 'sparking' when they posted & that's OK just don't go coy when some posters call you out on what they see as negative attitudes.

SirChenjin Wed 05-Feb-20 19:31:33

That’s right - there’s absolutely nothing to stop someone starting a misogynistic, sexist thread about a top. Just don’t be surprised if they’re called out on these views and the pointless irrelevance of such a topic is pointed out to them.

Chewbacca Wed 05-Feb-20 19:25:32

Who says that an item of news, that's being currently being discussed in the media, should not be discussed on GN? Why shouldn't it? It is a topical news item. It was posted, correctly, under News & Politics. Why should it not be discussed fully here? Who are the forum police who get to decide what subjects have sufficient gravitas to be discussed? If you don't like a subject being discussed, scroll on by. But stop dictating what subjects are suitable for discussion and what isn't.

SirChenjin Wed 05-Feb-20 19:23:46

It would seem so Greymar. Not shocked at what she was rightly highlighting or impressed by everything she’d achieved that day while her ankle was broken and in plaster. Oh no. Actually shocked - by a shoulder.

Greymar Wed 05-Feb-20 19:17:32

Shocked? by a shoulder?

Chestnut Wed 05-Feb-20 19:14:04

A perfectly legitimate thread Urmstongran and not your fault that people got so worked up about the criticism. I think a lot of people were quite shocked to see such clothing in the HoC and are perfectly entitled to say so. Just as you were entitled to post your opinion without deserving to be sent on a guilt trip.

SirChenjin Wed 05-Feb-20 19:04:55

Don’t play the innocent Urm - from the moment you posted the ‘oh dear’ and ‘I’m embarrassed on her behalf’ you were taking a swing at her and you’ve been on GN long enough to know exactly the sort of comments that were likely to follow. You lit the misogynistic touch paper and then stood well back.

Brabin very rightly says “ This is everyday sexism where women are continually judged for what they wear, how they look and not what they say."
You need to own it Urm

Urmstongran Wed 05-Feb-20 19:04:16

I read about it in the news yesterday. I started a thread.
??

Urmstongran Wed 05-Feb-20 19:02:49

sw Urm I’ll stay on this thread as long as I want thank you
Of course you will.

It’s just that up thread you said it was a silly thread and that you wouldn’t have done other than ‘think about it’.

Then not stopped commenting. Hehe!

suziewoozie Wed 05-Feb-20 19:00:41

But Urm you opened the door . You really didn’t think it would become a bun fight?

Urmstongran Wed 05-Feb-20 19:00:34

I’ve not ‘trashed her as a person’.

Greymar Wed 05-Feb-20 19:00:14

Phew, thank God the poor lady is not here to read it. And the wig.

Urmstongran Wed 05-Feb-20 18:59:37

I’m criticising the dress.

Just look business ready ! Not ready for business ...
?

suziewoozie Wed 05-Feb-20 18:59:00

Some of us remember ( pre social media days) when there were nasty personal comments about Mo Mowlem’s weight gain on MSM. It turned out she was on steroids for a brain tumour. I can just imagine the threads on GN pulling her appearance to pieces.

MamaCaz Wed 05-Feb-20 18:58:23

Oops - pressed post by accident instead of preview, so missed my chance to correct the formatting there!

MamaCaz Wed 05-Feb-20 18:56:52

suziewoozie
_What’s really stupid about this thread is not making the comment that it’s inappropriate ( although I’d have just thought it, not started a thread) but that some posters used the wearing of the dress to completely trash her as a person.

?

suziewoozie Wed 05-Feb-20 18:54:44

Urm I’ll stay on this thread as long as I want thank you. And Chew what I don’t like is threads that just pile in on a woman with no justification whatsoever. Can you not see the difference between criticising a dress and criticising the woman wearing it based on misinformation and lack of knowledge? Some posters on this thread are just continuing with totally misplaced criticism - eg JE and the jacket. TB is a Labour MP = bad therefore the truth is irrelevant.

Callistemon Wed 05-Feb-20 18:54:20

So what about a t shirt and jeans?

Apparently not at all acceptable office wear for a young male, according to a recent thread started by another male.

It's interesting to compare the two threads.

Yennifer Wed 05-Feb-20 18:51:39

Oh no! Not a shoulder!

Greymar Wed 05-Feb-20 18:51:24

I wonder if a male had forgotten his tie would this conversation be taking place? Actually many male politicians dress down in attempt to " look cool".

Can you imagine a conversation about the horrors of escaping chest hair, tight, ill fitting shirts or trousers which reveal their underneath parts?
