Oh dear.

Tracy Brabin, aged 58y, Labour MP for Batley, ex ‘Corrie’ soap actress wore this yesterday in the HoC.

I was embarrassed on her behalf. What do you think about her choice of outfit for work?

“Tracy Brabin is an excellent MP and she can wear whatever she likes as long as she does her job properly. Who are we to judge what someone is wearing? If she were a man this would not be making the headlines. Just another example of women being judged on their appearance.”

NO SHE CANT

Everyone who has a public profile IS judged by how they appear male or female, it’s nothing to do with discrimination and it does no no one any credit who says it does.
You dress according to the occasion, I you are meeting clients or customers there is a corporate impression you want to make. If you are a back office worker, is doesn’t matter, wear what you want, Ms Brabin is not a back office worker, she obviously was not getting the attention she wanted so decided to make a splash.

Smartness counts. The person in that OP photo does not look smart. It is, admittedly, not a flattering photo.

If it was a man wearing an open-neck shirt, showing chest hairs, I'd say the same.

It's not misogyny to say that a woman isn't smartly dressed when it's patently obvious that she isn't. She can indeed wear what she likes but people can say what they don't like too.

The insults being thrown about and the language is disgraceful.
I personally believe in dressing appropriately and she wasn't.
My opinion that's all, everyone has their right to an opinion I believe, or is that not true? There is no need for insults.
What of an MP in parliament wearing Hawaiian shirt, shorts and flip flops. He too would be taken seriously no doubt.

I once attended an undergraduate lecture by someone now rather well known, wearing full black tie. It was 9am and he opened the lecture saying ‘I’m afraid I have just stepped off the train from London’ - so in other words he had spent the night at a party or ball, had had no sleep (London was 40 mins away) & was now there to teach us. I suspect he gratefully fell into bed afterwards. He looked slightly ridiculous but covered the material as he usually did. Could only tell he was probably exhausted & hung over because of the outfit.

I wonder what would have happened had the same happened in the House of Commons - would there have been as much hysteria at a man dressed inappropriately in black tie. That’s the equivalent of the dress worn, not a string vest or jeans an t-shirt.

And of course there wouldn’t have been any pearl clutching or use of the word inappropriate because men don’t get attacked in the same way as women.

I think I would like to see that Callistemonlol.

A professional image is much more appropriate.

Tracy Brabin dressed appropriately for the event she attended during the afternoon. She could not have known when she set off for that event that there would be an incident in Downing Street. As it involved journalists, it was her role as Shadow Culture Minister to ask a point of order in the HoC. Looking at the picture when she was at the musical event earlier, it is obvious that the neckline of the dress has slipped.

Was your wise mother a shadow minister with a broken foot merlotgran?

PS. Meghan must be relieved that British bitchiness has a new victim.

merlotgran Thu 06-Feb-20 00:06:45

My mother used to say, 'Dress appropriately and you will be treated accordingly.'

I'm not a fan of Nicola Surgeon's political stance but I very much admire how she is always very well dressed; always dressed appropriately and professionally. She presents as someone who is in control at all times and, personally, I think that's important in the workplace.

annep1 grin

I don't find it an attractive fashion at all
But then, I am veering towards being elderly so it would look particularly ridiculous on me, especially if I ate all those biscuits.

RLB looked her usual professional self on Peston.

annep1 Wed 05-Feb-20 23:35:24

Goodness, I can't believe how worked up some people get about others opinions.

I think the top would look ridiculous at any time.
My opinion.

Good idea, raid the biscuit barrel and let all that anger get dispersed crunching them ? with a cup of cocoa ☕
Tomorrow is another day.....and hopefully another dress.

Callistemon Wed 05-Feb-20 23:22:49

Just bloody stop telling me what to do Urm just bloody stop it. The misogyny and stupidity on this thread is nothing to smile about. It’s not a matter of no consequence to slag off a decent women. The fact that you think that says much about you

Callistemon Wed 05-Feb-20 22:32:46

Just give the thread the cold shoulder.

Or the elbow

SirChenjin Wed 05-Feb-20 22:22:59

Yes, a shoulder really has such little consequence. Night night smile

Urmstongran Wed 05-Feb-20 22:19:16

Oh suziewoozie chill a bit eh? And now the misogynists have lost the argument, they resort to stupid pathetic derailing diverting tactics

I just thought the thread was winding down anyway after over 250 posts! Not a bad tally for something of so little consequence. A little joke or two at the end of the day (and the thread) to raise a smile.

Night all.

POGS Wed 05-Feb-20 22:17:46
