We'd have to join the ERM first and that would mean our new Scottish currency would be pegged to the Euro for a couple of years. They can't force any country to switch to the Euro. The last three countries who joined the EU have not yet changed, though they have agreed they will try in future.
We might find the EU would facilitate things for us positively as we would have been part of a block (UK) which has had a negotiated opt out. I would expect Scottish Labour, the Lib Dems, the Greens and the SNP to be a much more cohesive and co-operative negotiating force than the Westminster Tories have been so I think the EU would cut us some slack, whichever party is in power after independence.
As I've said before, the £1 and the Euro work in Ireland, so the transition period of a few months keeping the British £1 shouldn't pose any problems and then ....off we go to the ERM to see how it all works for us!
