UK-France summit.

Immigrants at Calais waiting to jump on lorries do not have EU passports, they are on French soil, and are trying on illegal behaviour .....plenty of reasons for the French police and immigration people to stop them.
If they have been offered homes in France and then refuse them it is up to France.

As a Brit living in the UK I am just as puzzled as you...

we have similar problems here in Belguim with refugees etc wanting to get to the UK. They can register here but do not want to seeing the UK as the promised land.
I was rolling through the DM online this morning, I like to get the various views of the different papers.
There was a very small item pointing out that if the French tightened the controls there, they would try to cross from 'Brussels', need a lesson in Geography I think.
The main problem here is almost in the city centre, with a few hundred people camped out in a city park, and there was a major incident recently when shots were fired when lorries were attacked near the ports. There is a bit of bitterness towards the UK as we are seen as having to deal with their problem, after all that is where they want to go.
UK border controls are also on Belgian soil and I know people would like to see them moved to the UK.
Why does the UK not want to take responsibility for these people?

That's certainly the impression I have...

You still can't travel without passport / ticket / visa (if needed) so I don't see how migrants could just be put on a boat.

I second what has been said about huge efforts to settle people throughout France. Have seen it locally and in all the papers.
I do think this business about the “border” in France is a red herring though. The UK “border” is only in France in Calais, Dunkirk and Paris and the French “border” is in the UK at Dover and London, but in fact what you are talking about are juxtaposed border controls which make it easier to drive straight off the other end.
In several other ports along the French coast, the French border control is in France and the UK border control in the UK.

If I were French that's one way of dealing with the migrants that I might think would look pretty good, suzied....

Maybe the French should just stick all the migrants on boats and send them of to England as thats where they want to be. Then we would have huge refugee camps in Dover. Is that what Brexiteers would want? Surely it’s in the interests of the U.K. to have secure borders in Calais and we should contribute to that.

There have been many reports in our local papers (SW France) of individuals and councils in small towns and villages offering to give homes to these refugees.
They're taken there from Calais by bus, a few agree to accept the hospitality, but others want to go to the big cities. Or back to Calais for the UK.
I think it's partly due to the fact that they're more likely to speak english than french.
French people have tried, here, anyway.

Oh, for heaven's sake! If there weren't a dirty great expanse of water between us and France they would be here in the UK. That's where they want to be. Why on earth you think they should be solely France's responsibility is beyond me.

It is utterly amazing.

Brexiters want to stop immigration and yet not prepared to take responsibility in policing our borders. Our customs staff are all on the French side, if I was Macron I would suggest that they all went back to their own country and dealt with the problem there.

The refugees didn’t fly into France but passed through other countries to arrive at Calais. It is solely France’s problem it s Europe’s. But we are busy leaving so must take sole responsibility, for those migrants aiming to get into the U.K.

France does do a surprising amount for the refugees and asylum seekers. They have various camps and settlement areas in different parts of the country. Those who do not wish to settle in France simply migrate again to Calais and try their luck with the lorries.
Many of them actually want to go to Germany or Scandinavia - more than are trying to get to U.K. Those who have French as their main or secondary language do want to stay in France - which is many from African countries. Those who want to get to U.K. have English as a second language or relatives already living in U.K.

or maybe "BRITISH" borders should be on british soil ....not up to France or anyone else to deal with people who want to come here .Isn't that what voters wanted ... a say on everything that affected them ?

The French authorities should never have allowed the tent encampments to get so huge.

Of course he is sincere and impressive; he wants to continue France's record of doing as little as possible to help the refugee crisis.

Easier for Macron to come across as confident, he has a big majority.

Most of the programme was taken up by live recording of the speeches of the two leaders.
May's was obviously read from pages in front of her. Macron probably had notes, but rarely looked at them. So came across as more sincere and impressive.
