Justin Welby has apparently weighed in on the snobbish nimbyism surrounding new housing plans and talks about making housing about places to live rather than simply as investments. Apparently he has been critical in a book he has coming out next month of people owning second and even third homes, not for living in but just for the 'investment'. As I understand it, he's saying we seem to have forgotten what houses are for: shelter, warmth, homes.

DD and her husband are finally selling the one bedroom flat that four of them live in and buying a three bedroom house. They both have degrees and the sort of good jobs that are supposed to make a degree worth paying for. I realised today that it has taken them 21 years to be able to buy a house. When DH and I got married in 1970 it took us one year to save the deposit and buy a house. I was a draughtsman and he was a lorry driver - not a degree between us. The housing crisis will never be solved while prices are so unaffordable.

I saw an interestng list a couple of days ago - but can't remember where - showing that many of those who have manual jobs now earn more than those with degrees.
I also read today that in Manchester not a single affordable home was built in the last two years.

Like you say, Deedaa, there's a mismatch somewhere.
