I don't think repaying one form of savagery with another is really the answer. I don't agree with the man being in fear of his life. If we go down that route, we're as barbaric as he is.

I think once one begins to behave in a way that devalues a life, lion or man, and sees oneself and more valuable/valued than another living creature, human or otherwise it is a downward spiral for us all. We feel bad for this lion, lured to its death by someone who gets some pleasure from harming it. We don't appear to get as angry when we see an African child dying or do we?

Do you think we have got so angry about it because we see it as a slippery slope ..if you can kill a beautiful animal could you kill a person that does not fit your image of 'someone like me' ?

I do not know the answers, I am just asking.

Some people value animals more than humans.

Some humans, that other humans dislike, don't harm anyone either but it does not stop people stirring up hatred and difficulty for them.

In their eyes, a cat or dog or pet does not harm them emotionally like humans have already done to them. That is why they prefer their pets.

I understand that soon but in this case (Cecil) and in cases where people hate other people irrationally ( e.g. colour/creed/race/sexual orientation) often they have no personal experience of the people /animal they hate!

Disgusted as I am by this brutal killng, I totally agree with Eloethans comment.

There are so many terrible things in the world, think of that poor baby in Israel burnt to death or the would be immigrants in Calais whose families have spent every penny to buy them freedom and it's all going to be for nothing and on and on and on. It makes it seem so much worse that there are people who go out to cause pain and death just for fun.

I hope nobody does kill this man, but I don't mind him thinking they might.

ethelbags I did not like the killing of the lion either but really feel wishing the imbecile who killed him to a life of dire poverty or worse is a bit OTT. I would suggest that he is fined an equivalent sum of money that he paid to kill the animals and that it is given directly to the reserve that the lion was lured from or similar place to carry on their conservation. Maybe he should also do some restorative justice and do some work with lions to try and learn to appreciate their beauty and value.

At least Im not making death threats, that would be too good for him. Let him spend the rest of his life ruminating on what he has done.

I agree Deedaa that it will do this man some good to feel in the position of the hunted for a change. I very much doubt anyone will kill him but letting him feel the fear isn't a bad thing.

I watched a Natural World programme last night about Mountain Lions. Their numbers are declining, partly because of the reintroduction of wolves, which kill their young but also because [you guessed it] so many are shot in the hunting season. As with bears, wearing a radio collar does not protect them from hunters even though it's obvious they are part of a study group. I do often think back to the Von Daniken [sp] book and wonder if we do actually belong to this planet as we're the only creatures on it that don't respect it and seem to do more harm than good.
