So I have telephone banking as I don't trust mobile apps. This works well for me as long as I don't need to speak to an advisor.
Today I tried to set up a new payee. The advisor asked if I had access to online banking as I could do it myself. I said I didn't and wanted to proceed via telephone. After a heavy sigh he tried to add my payee but the account details and name didn't match. I rang off, checked details and tried again. Another advisor again told me I should use the online app. I have a joint account with my husband who managed to set up a mobile app and we tried to pay the bill. It didn't go through but he was told to call the Fraud Dept. The Fraud Dept said as we didn't normally use a mobile app they had frozen our account and we would have to take ID to our local branch to unlock it.
Our local branches have all been closed so we had to drive miles to the nearest branch.
The account was eventually unlocked and the payment went through. What a faff! This is exactly why I don't want to use online banking!

You are making life difficult for yourself.
If you had already had online banking you would be conversant with how it all works. You wouldn't necessarily need a mobile app but it's simpler to use one.
Paying a new payee is easy. First of all you must ensure you have the correct payee details. Once you are sure, you simply use the app to enter the payee’s name, say whether it’s a personal of business account, input their account number, sort code and amount to be paid.
The bank will check that the account you are about to pay is bona fide.
You will be then be taken though a couple of security checks including two-step authentification via a text, email or card reader (depending on the bank) and it’s done. No phone calls necessary. Takes about five minutes tops.
I’ve only gone onto online banking via the App in the past 18 months. It’s so easy. I can’t believe I was so stubborn and delayed it for so long.
I did have an issue paying an enormous amount to a new payee, but I’m pleased the Bank was thorough in finding out that it was a genuine transaction.

That's good to hear.
Yes, it's good too to have some extra internal checks. My bank won't let customers move more than £10,000 in one transation.
I'm nervous of apps and of doing banking things on my phone, so I use online banking on my desktop computer and have no problems.
I also resited on-line banking but now I love it. It has become so much easier to manage my money and frees up more time to hang around on here lol!
I don't have a banking app but I do use online banking . My branch account is over 25 miles away
I do my banking online at my desktop computer. It feels safer to me somehow. Probably psychological but but nobody is going to snatch my desktop away in the same way phones get nicked.
Online banking is simple and safe.
I recently saw a transaction I didn’t recognise so I put an immediate block on my account while I investigated.
Once I had got to the bottom of the problem I switched back on again.
Safe and easy.
I stil think a cheque is safer. So many people are scammed. And I’ve heard of people losing money with fake qr codes.

I used to,do online banking through the web until the bank contacted me to tell me that an app was safer. The thing is that when you go through www. you are operating in a vast area. If you set up an app you are able to go directly in. It is quicker and safer.
I prefer to do online banking on my laptop.
Very occasionally I might use my ipad but not my phone. The keyboard is too small.

Hopefully if you have a banking app on your phone you also have security so someone can't just access your phone.

Someone would need to have my face to get into my phone, and again to get into my banking app.
Online banking is very common, I don’t actually use an App I log into the banks site using my access codes and can pay all my bills.
I have 3 codes I need to use for access and to confirm access I get a One Time Code on my phone, in 10 yrs I’ve never had a problem which is a lot less than I had using cheques.
Being able to make instant transfers when I am buying or selling is a big advantage, travelling we don’t bother with currency it’s all online, cards or contactless.

Laptop banking works well, quite secure.
I use a dumb phone for emergency calls.
I don’t do online banking o my phone. I do it via an app on my iPad and using my own wi fi.

As others have said, if someone steals your phone, they need to be able to access anything in ut through passcodes, fingerprints, ir face. Even if they were able to somehow get access to anything which is highly unlikely, on-line banking accounts need passwords, user IDs and other security to access them too. It would make life so much easier for you if you would use it. They try and make online banking as easy to navigate around as possible too.
Online banking doesn't have to be done on phones.
I've done online and mobile banking for while, but my husband has only just started (with mobile banking) due largely to the problems of getting to a branch of the bank that is still actually open. All three of our local branches have closed, despite the fact that we live in a very urban part of greater London.
He's yet to open online banking and because of this has had problems doing quite a few things.
All these new methods of banking seem to be primarily for the benefit of the bank, enabling them to shut branches - though when you do go to a branch you see just how many people need to do things that can only be done there.
Personally I find mobile banking very useful but still need to visit a branch sometimes.

This is often a problem I think, though I have finally managed to get them to raise my daily limit. There was one payment that they actually would not allow me to do online, so eventually I had to send the payee a cheque which seems ridiculous in this day and age.
We moved house during lockdown and had quite a performance making the exchange and completion payments to the solicitor as there was only one bank open in a 30 mile area. We had to queue for two hours on both occasions,
I have had online banking since it was invented and never had the problems you describe, but I would never for a moment consider using my phone for banking.
Any confidential online business I do from my laptop and clear the browser once I have finished every time.
Perhaps you should give online banking from a computer or tablet another try?
Absolutely agree, I’ve banked online for twenty years, as long as you are careful with passwords etc, ( most banks appear to have two stroke authentication nowadays) it works fine. It’s annoying not to be able to be able to walk into a branch occasionally but it’s life .
