Lights in fridges

Why are lights put in fridges? do we need them? With the interior being white do they actually help you see what is in back. I suppose if the fridge is in a really dark pantry type cupboard it might help but otherwise🤷 I did have a fridge that had a bleep if you left the door open too long now that was helpful.

It would certainly help me to curtail midnight feasting if there were no light 62Grannygrin

Well, if the bulb in the fridge light conks out, you realise how dark the interior is.

I had a fridge for years which had a light that didn't work, despite the fact that I replaced the bulb. I had to keep a torch handy to be able to see what was going on inside, even in bright daylight.

My fridge light never last long, neither does the oven bulb so I’ve not bothered to replace them now.

I have a freezer with no light and it's really difficult to find things.

Oh I like my LED lights in my fridge. I wouldn’t be able to find my treats otherwise. I hide them from hubby.

For anyone who has a Haier FF, bulbs aren’t replaceable. I mean you can’t just go & buy one. It’s a whole new part of which the company has to send out an engineer to fit, but they don’t say that in the manual.

I've just bought a new fridge which has the usual white light but also near the salad drawer it has coloured lights supposedly to imitate sunlight to keep your salad fresher longer.

Do the coloured lights stay on when you close the door? I suppose they must or no point having them.
Hailer are sponsoring the tennis,I’d never heard of them before this year. They must be selling a lot of fridges.

Lights are not on in fridges 24/7. They come on when the door is open and turn off when the door is closed.

If I leave the door open too long both my fridge and my separate freezer sound an alarm, but that is to stop the cold air leaking. The light turns off as soon as I shut the door. The light is a very low power LED light and the light uses less than _£1 a year Not enough to worry about.

And yes I do find it helps to have a fridge light. My fridge and freezer have their backs to the windows so get no direct light in them.

Freezer and fridge doors are not often on for very long for

Monica if the coloured lights go off when the door is closed .what is the point of having them? If they are there to imitate sunlight, as Elless says they would need to be on for a reasonable amount of time.

62Granny Wed 24-Jun-26 15:54:27

I do know it turns off when you close the door I am not totally gaga.😂

NotSpaghetti Wed 24-Jun-26 16:06:42

The coloured light thing...

(HarvestFresh or VitaminCare+)

It simulates the 24-hour sun cycle to preserve the nutrients and vitamins in fruit and veg. It stays on with the fridge door closed and eventually turns off for a long stretch (10 hours?) to simulate night.

You can check it with a mobile phone... take a video from inside your salad drawer.

If that is directed at me I would like everyone to know that I am well aware the white light goes out.
It’s the coloured lights I’m talking about. How do they keep the salad fresh if they are not on?

This made me laugh outloud!

It was the image of looking for treats in the darkness...

... I do have a head-torch though... 👌 (for emergencies you understand)

I've got the very latest mobile phone that lives in the fridge full time to monitor the food supply and provide dietary advice. Then it sends a message in the voice of George Clooney.

" The celery's gone droopy and there's some green stuff growing on the yoghurt. We need more milk, don't forget to buy some on the way home. I've asked Alexa to find a recipe to use up the leftover gooseberries and anchovies."
